The local dealer took a 02 white lightening in on trade with 13,000 miles. It comes with the owners manual, shop manual and some spare brake pads and a few other parts. The bike looks pristine and sounds good. We currently have 2 yamaha fz1's and a kawi concours and have done fork seals and rejet carbs on the fz's and always done our own pm but I have read the x1 need constant work, what all pm do you have to do and is there anything we should look for? The dealer is asking 2900.00 for it, would you suggest this? My husband is real interested and loves the way the bike sounds and feels (he got to pull it in the shop at closing) and I am sure the dealer might let him test ride it.

>>>is there anything we should look for?

The local DMV to transfer the title, a gas station to fill her up and some good twisty roads to get lost on for the rest of the day.

Seriously, if it's in good shape, pristine was the word used, then $2900.00 is an absolute steal.

As far as PM, change the oil, check the tires, etc. Tubers (the X1 is a tuber) are about as maintenance free as motorcycles come. Hydraulic valves, belt drive. The primary chain is about the only thing you'll ever need to adjust as far as PM goes, and they tend to be fine after the initial stretch and first adjustment at 5K.

In my opinion, cosmetics aside if the bike shifts well up and down, accelerates linearly and without hesitation through the rev range and stops well then the asking price is very reasonable especially for an '02 which has many updated parts. Do a search here and you'll find a lot of good information on things to look for when buying an X1. Also keep in mind that X1s are fuel injected but there is free software available to tune the bike and check for the condition of the various sensors and other things.
I don't know too many people who bought an X1 and regretted the purchase. Go for it before someone else beats you to it....

WOW,what a deal.Def +1 to go get it.I paid too much for mine in '05(an '00 X-1 Lightning)but it had a list of mods,so it is what it is....Have had little issues(did the paper rocker box gasket replacement, etc.Already had the updates/recalls done by prior owner up to '05).Do go an get it and as already said do a check on recalls/updates done to the bike.....

I read on motorcycle news that you had to work on them every time you rode 2 hours and something else about the wheel bearings had issues. Do you just get parts from the harley dealer?

I put 50K miles on mine commuting 120 miles round trip. I don't remember having to work on it every day. Overall, it has been splendidly reliable.

Remember, when reading things online, that people who don't have issues with their bikes seldom jump up and down and scream that their bike didn't break down today. Folks with bad experiences do however. I wouldn't let that scare you off.

You can get some parts from HD dealers. That 02 is almost 10 years old. If it's a common Sportster part, you're in luck. The aftermarket supplies quite a few parts as well. Buell specific parts can be had from american sport bike, eBay, the classified section here, or...just ask around. Someone probably has the part you need in a box somewhere.

The White Lighning is white. That is the only difference. White wheels too unless it has the Polished Machined wheels on it.

I own two. If you don't want him to have it, then I'll go and get it and he'll be sore at you for the rest of your life. Your choice.

That White Lightning is a steal! And pristine too? Yea, I just picked up a '99 X1 Lightning in the fall, 11k miles, needed tires, battery, brake pads, rear caliper, master cylinder, for $2500, and had folks telling me that it was a steal based on miles and overall condition. Go for it.

If I can get by I will snap some pics but it needs nothing. The tires look new, the belt looks new, it has no scratches and as a matter of fact the only wear I saw was the pegs.

Kim, you must buy the bike. IF it doesn't work out, it can easily be re-sold to re-coup your cost here on badweb.
The X1 is the most advanced of all the tube-framed buells, and the 2002 benefits from all the updates for which earlier bikes need updates.
Do it. Your DH or SO or whatever he is will never, ever, I mean never, have as nice a bike to ride for so little money. Never. Ever. Really.
And if he doesn't appreciate it, there are many red-blooded, great guys on this forum who will be happy to steal you, a bike-buying spouse, away from him. As long as you bring the bike along in the deal, too. :-)

As has been said Buy it now....
I have had mine for only a year an a half,
it has let me down once, the Bank angle sensor.
Easy to switch off with ECM spy.
Have had to do minor maintenance like wheel bearing, intake seals, but hey its 11 years old now.

Post pictures once you have it!

My bike had some issues at first. A wire to one of the fuel injectors broke (fixed by me at no cost), battery died (which was 10 years old anyway), seals on the fuel pressure regulator went bad which was probably my fault for using fuel injector cleaner. The rear isolators were the original, non-beefed up style and they had torn. Yours should come with the new, beefier ones. Also an easy fix on the X1 though.

And then, of course, I dropped it doing a wheelie... hahah! Held up pretty well though! I love this bike to death and nothing else on the market calls to me like this noisy beast!
