So I haply added a 2000 X1 Lightning to the family of cycles in the garage.

For some bike back ground.
Racing ECM
Forcewinder intake (previous ower took off the left air scoop and tossed it)
Not sure on the exhaust (if its after market.

The air temp was a balmy 60deg and after about 20min of a 40min ride at 70-80 mph I noticed my nuts were getting nicely toasted (felt like I was pissing my pants)and I was swinging my right leg out about every 5 min to cool my inner thigh.

This part doesn't bother me that much, but I am quite afraid of what this summer will bring, as it gets into the 100's on the hottest days.

I'm open to suggestions as I am fairly comited to riding this bike for the next few years and I commute 65 miles each day to work. Will I have to switch out to my wife's honda shadow or the old GSXR1100 when the heat gets too hot?

Let me know!

John

I got my X1 in september when the weather was still in the 90's here. It does make your crotch a bit sweaty, but nothing you can't handle.

I'm a pretty short guy though, so my legs stay away from the really toasty bits (5'6"). Taller folks might feel more heat from the exhaust.

I have an X1 without the forcewinder but is has the race kit
I have the aftermarket fan, when it was a Buell product, now you can buy it from American Sportbike, it works okay, when the engine gets really hot the fan kicks on and you can feel the heat being blown to the right side
I have heard synthetic oil will lower the operating temp and you might consider a oil cooler, I have done neither for the X1 I ride

Buell = Toasted nuts! Although it's always pretty warm i've never really had it get unbearable on my S3... my 1125 on the other hand takes heat to the next level!

I have a 01 X1 with a full D&D race exhaust and it is no better than the stock exhaust. I am taller at 6' 1" and it cooks my right calf if the wind is blowing a certain direction.

The only thing that helps is if you have the exhaust ceramic coated.

I am having mine done when the snow flies.

Wrap your header, you'll be glad you did.

If you haven't already, check your oil level. My S3 lets me know if I've been negligent by getting a bit warmer. I switched to synthetic oil as well once I read that it made the engine run cooler. It may be that I wanted to believe I was getting my money's worth, but it did seem to help some.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Rode this morning at 43 deg and welcomed the heat from the bike. On the ride back at 58 it wasn't so bad, as I did have my cold weather gear on and so I wasn't aware of the heat on the way home.

I look forward to chatting and learning more about this bike!

The X1 is a fantastic motorcycle. Hard to find parts for, but then, I'm used to buying parts for beetles : p

I'm currently going to be waiting around 10 days for a fuel pressure regulator in the mail.... phooey.

I" second "the header wrap reply. Worked well on mine. Bought a 25 ft. kit just to do the top pipe sections.

I wouldn't recommend wrapping your header, I got my bike with a wrapped header and although it was not corroded it was badly discolored and in places where it got a little vibration the header actually got some wearing on it from the heat wrap... in one spot the wear was to bad to grind away.. it took me 5 hours with scotch brite disc and pads to made the thing look good w/o the wrap on it.... imo the bike looks better without it as well.

"I" think wrapping the headers makes the bike look ratty! The fact that i can have mine ceramic coated in black is even better and it will match the can.
