just bought a 1998 s1w... that needed more work than I originally though. one of the h/g were leaking as well as rear base gasket so heads and jugs are at machine shop and i have bought all the parts to fix it.. never the less while doing this i also had the forks rebuilt and am having the bike repainted. It is a s1w according to the vin on the frame, but has the blue frame/ orange body going on.... the tank was primed which is the reason I am repainting everything plus the orange was not quite stock...

one thing I have a question about is the twin tail which it has stock... I bought the new fairing piece for the single tail and a corbin seat... but it looks like i will need another bracket or something to make this happen unfortunately i am not at home. So i cant totally see whats going on. But i have a pic... can anybody tell me what im looking for. right now the tail light protrudes too far..

here is how the bike looked before i took it apart.

how the bike looks now

polished engine mount next to a stock x1 mount My roomate told me this pic does not do it justice it looks chrome.

paint sample next to fairings. roomate says the fairings are just a little bit lighter than the stock color.

Welcome and congrats on the new bike! Paint looks great, that header looks great too. Can't for get that gorgeously polished motor mount. I've tried that with mine, the metal was too porous and it just didn't look good.

Color matched swing arm and brace look sharp too, nice touches.

The twin tail package used a different tail light bracket if I recall correctly, for the single you would need the single bracket as well. I can put up a photo of the short bracket from my bike if you'd like...

There should be part numbers and drawings of the parts in the S1/S1W parts catalog. I am not in the same place as my catalog right now to look it up, but that and a couple of pic's from somebody who has one apart should do you.

If no one else does it before I get back, I'll look it up.

Nice bike. I think I remember reading something about Buell testing several different orange paint tones, because of worries that the orange might fade. But I'm going on vague recollection on this.

Check out the tank painting info here and in the KV section. There is a recent thread about the issue.

Nice bike.

Very nice. Glad to see some of these S1W's coming out of the woodwork : )

Littlebuggles is correct, there is a different bracket that goes on the tail for a twintail. I'm trying to remember from when I was playing with the twintail on my bike - mine came solo, and briefly I thought about putting the twintail on but decided to keep it solo - but I think that if you simply unbolt the extension piece from the rear subframe, I think the taillight just goes right to the subframe.

But I've been wrong before.

At any rate, when you get a chance send me a PM with your info, the bike's info, VIN, and any mods. It's nowhere near what Frank's turned the S2 owners list into, but I'm keeping an S1W owners' list so we can track these great bikes.

Nice. You've got the newer 99-02 type swingarm there too.

Littlebuggles- yeah the exhaust manifold took some elbow grease, about 4 hours actually i polished it myself, when i purchased the bike out of the bay area it had heat wrap on it, which was actually working through the material, when i pulled it off i didn't know if I would be able to bring it back but four hours later and a lot of used scotch brite and Hollywood wax and it looked great.

and the motor mount I paid to have done, i also had the rocker boxes done at the same time, there is this guy that can polish just about anything in town, it cost me 70 dollars. worth it imo i was never going to get it looking that good.

Thanks for the info on the twin tail stuff "if i ever get home" ill try to mount the tail light w/o the bracket, that would be awesome if that worked. If not ill need to find one of those. summer was a bad timed to pull the bike apart especially when I havent been home for 40+ days due to work.

here is the reason I tore the bike down haha.

Ratbuell- yeah I always liked buells, just never had the money to own one relly and didnt know much about them, then I got a roommate who owns a very clean x1, I did some research and thought the s1 looked great... Found what I thought was a smoking deal @ 2900 dollars for the bike... still wasent a bad deal but after finding the head gasket problem the deal wasent quite so sweet haha. ill shoot you vin and info on the bike whenever I get home..... some day lol..

I am a helicopter mechanic so I go wherever it goes, and fire season keeps me busy. haha Maybe once my roomate is home, (same job but works less and makes more) ill have him shoot me the vin.
