I have a 99 s3 that will not start.
I went on a 90 mile short ride yesterday.
This morning it will not start.
When I parked it there was nothing unusual It was not hot, idled fine.
It has been stumbling in the lower rpm range for a while.
I turn the key to on, red lite comes on then goes off after about 5 seconds I hear the fuel pump noise it may be not as noisy as it was as I can remember. Do fuel pumps go out very often on these models? I hit the starter it cycles but will not fire.
I have gas in the tank. Checked the fuses located under the seat.
I do not smell gas.
On my s2 I could tackle this problem.
Fuel injection I am at a loss.
I am away from my home (not to far)but have access to the basic tools.
Any quick suggestions would be appreciated
before I need to go get my truck and haul this home.
Is there a few simple things I can try.
Thanks. Tps reset? Can this be done without a computer connection.

When was the last time you changed plugs? If it cranks and the pump is running, I'd start there.

Last time I checked them was last year.
Would they both foul at one time?
I will check their color today.
It is not even popping or trying to start at all. I would hope to smell gas if it was getting any

The TPS shouldn't suddenly change on you. Along those lines, it would be good to make sure your butterfly shaft didn't break. If it's good, spray some starter fluid in to see if the bike will run if fuel comes from another source.
Changing plugs may do it. While you have one out see if you have a spark.
I'm not sure how to make sure the injectors are getting a signal to fire. That's something I'll need to look up when I get home for my own benefit...

Check for things that will kill your ignition. Make sure your neutral light is on, sidestand switch etc.

Your kill switch is in the 'run' position right?

had to ask...

Not a problem. It is cycling when I hit the starter switch.
When the kill switch is activated it will not cycle checked and tried in Neutral
tried side stand up and down.

Thanks for everyones help I need to do the starting fluid thing and isolate the fuel from ignition

Thats my plan for this evening

Ah. My old honda would crank all day with the kill switch on. Really embarrassing.

Ok pulled the plugs they look good did a quick crank of the engine has spark,
Sprayed starting fluid into intake the bike fired on the starting fluid then quit.

So I am not getting fuel

What would be my next check

There is fuel in the tank.

Are there any sensors that control the fuel as far as go or no go?

Do fuel pumps go out on these bikes very often

A fuel pump going out isn't unheard of, but it isn't very common either.

Just one more reason why I prefer my old carb Buells : D

Speaking of "old" Buells....I started working on my S1W again last night. It hasn't been started in almost 3 years. I'm hoping the thing runs again!!!

Fuel filter?

It's inline, between pump and intake, IIRC. Quick check, pull it and splice the lines together without a filter, see if it runs.

For that matter, pull the hose off the inlet side of the filter, and cycle the key. Does it hose everything down? If yes...something downstream from there is clogged. If no...something upstream (like maybe the pump, although if you hear it cycle it should be working).

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I will need to haul it home and do these checks.
My space is limited and my tools.

Thanks again to all

Are there any sensors that control the fuel as far as go or no go?

the bank sensor (tip over sensor) cuts the fuel.
I believe it can be disconnected to test.

There is gas in the tank? Stupid question, but should be asked.

yes there is gas in the tank.
Not a stupid question
I started to try and get to the fuel line and it is not that simple of a process.
Look like it will get parked and I will ride my s2.

Do you know if the tip over sensor just cuts the fuel or does it cut everything electrical to

Ok I left the bike on a trickle charger for about 4 or five days guess what it now starts up.
The battery was low from me trying to start it.

I am now worried about being stuck in the near future.

Back to why I am having this problem any clues

Might just need a new battery.

Might just need a new battery.

Or a bad stator

or a bad voltage regulator

The bike started with starting fluid. It could point to a weak spark, but I think the injectors bail on you before the plugs do. With that in mind, I can't buy into the battery/charging system being at fault. I don't have a good answer to what it could be, though.

FI bikes are fussy about have good starting voltage, have had several that would crank but not fire with less than 12 volts.

Have you checked the relays located on the fuse box. My 1999 Buell would not start and one of the two relays was not working. Similar problem happened on my 2000 S3, again it was one of the two relays. $15/each...I keep spares now.

I would start with fuel pressure check. If you have spark and you hear the pump running but no fuel, I would suspect the pump not pushing enough pressure. The starter fluid is a pretty strong indicator.
