Today I thought I would learn how to play with ECMSpy on my 1999 X1. I had previously saved my stock maps and EEPROMs, so I thought there would be no problems because I could always go back to the stock maps. Nope... I'm F*ed... After playing with the mapping, I decided to return the stock maps and promptly couldn't find them in my laptop. After a couple hours of searching, I asked my wife if she had deleted anything out of the laptop recently. Yes, you know the answer... she had deleted out my maps because she didn't recognize the files and thought there may be virus action going on. My luck sucks...

If there is anyone out there that could e-mail me some maps, I would greatly appreciate it!!! My e-mail address is lee.williams13@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance for helping out a knucklehead like me!!!

Which ECM do you have? I can probably get you the stock maps from my race ECM but I don't have them from my stock ECM. As long as you don't run it you'll be OK. Nothing a little time won't fix.

I can also send you the stock maps and .epr file for my '00 X1. If I were you I would just load the maps and leave the .epr alone.

I think the 1999 maps were considered bad and for a time, dealers were reflashing them with the newer 2000-up program.

Well, I'm still F'ed... I have loaded the stock maps and when I try to load the EEPROM, I get a message that it's not compatible with the ECM.

Help?????

I'm seeing a difference in the firmware version when trying to load the new EEPROM. The "new" EEPROM I'm trying to load shows BUEJA120 and the one currently in the ECM shows BUEGC0B0. Help??

It would help if you posted the symtoms,
did you load the race map?,
or just alter the stock mapping?.
Does the bike run at all?.
Or does it fire and not run?.
or wind over without firing?.

2002 M2... Yet another reminder of why I bought a Buell with a carb. Not trying to cause you any harm, just happy again that I made the choice I did back in 2003 when I bought the M2 over the X1.

I loaded the 2000 X1 stock maps that I received from Nallac. The bike will fire but not run.

Is there any way of "zeroing" out the ECM, i.e., clearing everything out of memory and starting over since I seem to be getting firmware error issues?

I'm pretty sure the stock ECM is what's on the bike. I'll need to double check that tonight after work... The previous owner did some other odd modifications on the X1, so I'll need to re-check if the ECM is stock or race.

Thanks to all of you who have tried to come to my rescue!!! Your help and wisdom is greatly appreciated!!!

You've probably heard me say this before but you should never load an EEPROM file onto your stock ECM. There is no need for that. All you need to do is load/burn the maps. The BUEJA120 is the most common version of the ECM that came stock on X1s. You'll need to have someone send you the .epr file for a BUEGC0B0 version so you can start from scratch. I'm pretty sure mine is of the common variety but I'll double check to be sure.

Thanks, Kalali!!!!! How do you load the .epr file into the ECM? I see how to load the .txt files, but I don't know the process for the .epr...

The process should be the same. You need to "Burn" the EEPROM onto your ECM. You choose the option to "Load" the EEPROM and that will point you to where you have saved the EEPROM file. You then select the file you want and do a "Burn". Keep in mind that when you burn the entire EEPROM file it will also burn whatever maps you had in that file. After that you can go and burn whatever map(s) you want onto your "new" EEPROM. If you notice, when you save the EEPROM, it will create two files: one is a .txt and the other is a .epr. I hardly ever mess with the EEPROM so its been a while since I did this but it is pretty straightforward. You may want to print the .txt file of your current EEPROM and compare it with the new one just so know it worked. The differences will be very subtle to the eye.

Will that take care of the firmware error I get regarding the difference in the BUEJA120 / BUEGC0B0 versions? Kal, do you have maps available that you could e-mail to my lee.williams13@yahoo.com address? Since your expertise is completely respected on this site, I'd like to try your maps if they are compatible with my ECM.

On a side note... Are the 2000 and newer year ECMs different than the 1999 version? Would it be worth purchasing a 2000+ version?

Thanks again for all the help!!!!!

Lee, I'll be happy to send you both my stock and my current maps modified for my set up; V&H and Forcewinder. If you like, I can also send you my EEPROM files.
But I'm wondering about what you wrote in original post and it seems that you only changed the maps. If so, then your EEPROM file should have not been corrupted. You should be able to load the maps regardless of the ECM version. So something does not make sense. Now if you attempted to change anything in the .txt file and "Burned" the EEPROM, then I would say you really screwed up. You can not change the EEPROM inadvertently as long as you don't "burn" the EEPROM. So think back and track your steps and find out what did you exactly "burn" into the ECM. Do what I suggested: print your current .txt file and compare it with the one I'll send you (my stock EEPROM .txt file) and see if they match exactly. It's a tedious exercise unless you know a clever way to compare the two .txt files.
As for the differences between '99 or '00+ ECMs, as far as I know, you can swap them with no problem. They do occasionally pop up in classifieds for ~$100-$150.

Notepad++ from sourceforge.net will compare two text files. It's a good VBscript editor too.

Kalali,

Thanks for sending me the maps!!! I'm running a K&N and a D&D exhaust, so richer is better for me!!

I didn't change any of the fields in the EEPROM, so hopefully I'm OK there. I'll do a diff comparison with the .txt files and see how it looks. If there are differences, should I burn your EEPROM to my ECM since your EEPROM is a "truth set"?

Lee,

The D&D was designed for the map in the Race ECM, so that map might be a good place to start.

"If there are differences, should I burn your EEPROM to my ECM..."

In either case, you should save your current EEPROM and your maps before you go any further. Once you do that then you can burn the file I sent you and see what happens. When you get the bike running, then you can concentrate on tweaking the maps to suit your set up.
I hope it works...

P.S. My F/W version is JA120.

I've tried everything that's been suggested and the X1 still won't turn over. I've ordered a new ECM and I'm hoping and praying it will be here prior to my departure for Laguna Seca in 9 days. Since I was taking the X1 to MotoGP, if I can't get it up and running, my travel plans will be severely compromised.

Thanks for the help and if there are any other suggestions out there, I would love to hear them...

Thanks to all!!!
