Any reason the M2 Chassis could not be upgraded to FI using parts from an S3 and an X1?

S3 Tank and Fuel Pump
X1 Engine, Fuel Injection, sensors and Wiring harness?

????

It should work. The M2 and S3 Frames are identical as far as I know.

Aren't the S3 and X1 engines as well?

Tom...why would you want to do that? Just curious because most people would rather make their FI bikes into carb bikes. Easier to maintain and tune.

Jose...the frames are not identical. They are VERY close but the parts are not interchangable.

Darthance...the S3 and X1 engines are the same starting in '99. The pre-99 S3 engines are the same but not FI.

Ok they are not identical, I stand corrected.

However, I will say that an S3 tank will fit on an M2 frame and vise versa because I have seen people do it. A few people I know with FI bikes have switched to carbs, and they have used M2 or pre '99 S3 tanks to do the conversion.

Once that step is taken, the rest of the FI items should bolt right up (intake, wiring harness, sensors, ECM, exhaust w/O2 sensor, etc.)

I began this exact same project a couple years back, but lost interest. Write me off line and I will tell you everything I know. That is unless, others are interested too.

Lake:

We have a really good (98 rwhp) X1 engine and all of the "stuff" setting in the shop.

We sold the X1 frame as a roller to a Road Racer, and are looking for a "project".

FI is one of the things that our company works with, so it would see, logical that we work with the FI system.

M2s can be purchased for a good bit less than same year X1s or S3.

Snowdave:

You have mail

Thanks

Jim:

I have access to stand alone engine control systems (MoTeC) for FI bikes, cars, trucks, and etc. Our "stuff" is on the Vance and Hines VR that is currently tearing up the NHRA Bike category.

Our plan is to retro fit an M2 with X1 FI parts, then proceed to develop the interface between the Buell FI and the MoTeC engine control unit.

This year may be a bit "soon" for FI at Bonneville, however, next season should be as my Aussie Friends say "No Worries".

later

Only if you are using the stock Buell stuff as there are plenty of bikes out there with great FI.The problem with the Buell FI is it uses an oxygen sensor as its sole input and that sensor is degrading from day one,and there is really no way to fiddle with maps.Power Commander is not even making any for Buells anymore.I have had a couple of Triumphs with wonderfully running FI.And after watching John Noonan tune his turbo Hayabusa at Bonneville by simply plugging in a computer and hitting a couple of key strokes I am sold.No gas spilling from jet changes, etc.Tom,I am eagerly awaiting your revelations.

I'm a fan of mechanical devices over electronic. I just converted an early throttle body fuel injection truck to carburetion. I like it a lot...four wires and a couple tunable circuits over a tangled mess of sensors and wires.

I believe that the tanks are similar, with the exception of the fuel injection pump, etc. that fits in the bottom of the tank. I bought a an s-3 tank once on ebay, and it was from the fuel injection model. sold it.

I put an S-3 tank on my 97 cyclone. Fits perfect. S-3 fairing also.rex

Tom,

I have my FI intake and parts for sale on Ebay right now if you are still looking for stuff. Keep the M2 engine and just add the FI parts. You would still need the ECM, sensors and wiring harness, but those should be easy enough to get or fabricate.
