I was putting the new gaskets back in and they don't quite fit, it seems like I could force the issue but it might cause the gasket to bend a bit... any advice, thanks

which gaskets? The rubber rocker cover gaskets can be put in the freezer to shrink them up a bit for a better fit.

If you are talking about the metal exhaust gasket that is mushy like lead, here is a trick I use.

Put them in the freezer in a baggy in the ice for 24 hours.

I then use mapp gas to heat the counter sink the gasket it goes into.

After about 90 seconds of heating I have the Mrs bring me one and *POP* in she goes!

The GASKET,exhaust port PN 65324-83A are "CRAP" !!!

Use GASKET,exhaust port PN 17048-98 ...

You do not need any special ways to install it !!!

Just make sure where it fits is clean !!!

What about those solid copper gaskets, like from JPCycles? They run about $10 and look pretty... well, solid. Anybody ever use those?
I had some mechanic tell me the Screaming Eagle gaskets that Buellistic mentioned are for "racing" and would require "racer" type (frequent) maintenance. I don't want anything blocking the exhaust, but I don't want to have to change them very often either.
As I'm about to change my header, I'm also interested in this topic.

Solid copper ones are JUNK!

Buellistic, are those the 'square' profile ones? If those are then if your exhaust is slightly out of round OR tweeked a bit you will have a leak.

MAPP Gas

It is just a bit hotter than

First of all, being a OLD SCHOOL "MECHANIC"
"i" was taught to look for imperfections during installation and correct said imperfections !!!

"i" will say again the -98 exhaust gasket is the best !!!

This -98 TYPE GASKET, to my knowledge comes with after market headers ???

I have seen quite a few leaks with those on stock Buell Exhausts.
The stock gaskets have that extra 'squish' even if you get a 'smudge' installing them...

JR,
I finally got that case half boxed up. Just gotta head to the post : )

I may be just super lucky but I've had no problems with changing the exhaust gaskets YET. I do tend to butter them with a never seize compound. Yet I will be changing the intake seals soon so we will see how that goes. Aw crud I just hope that diagnosis is correct. Ya'll know how that can challenge the best of us.

They are just as Jramsey says ...

And you should check out your header gaskets in the "DARK" when you can best see a leak ...

Have never had any trouble with these(-98), do to the way "i" install the exhaust system ...

Why would anyone install a gasket, that when compressed close's off the export a little bit ???

Well it doesn't. It is tapered to squeeze around the the outside of the flange, between the countersink and pipe.

It goes into the exhaust port as much as the curve of the radied exhaust flange does...

I just got a new topend gasket set, it came with the square version.
All the other sets I've gotten had the tapered version.
Interesting..
