I was out riding the M2 today (I am REALLY starting to enjoy this bike) and was doing a speed run.

It hit the wall at 85MPH. I couldn't get any more out of it.

Is there some sort of soft redline or governor?

It just hit a wall and wouldn't go no more.

2000 M2, V&H, Jetted Carb.

When did you get a cyclone?

there is a rev limiter
I Think its either 6200 or 6800 rpm

speedo error,
clutch slip?
wind resistance, you are kinda big I can only get 115 outa my X1 ( my size and weight )

top speed should be in the 120 mph area on level ground and it takes a while to get there, doing a roll on

Welcome to the madness of tube frame buells.

No it should go 135mph. Check your throttle cable adjustment to be sure that the butterfly valve can rotate a full 90 degrees. Make sure the slide is able to move all the way up. There might be debris preventing it from moving the needle all the way out. I'm just guessing, I'm sure there are people here that know from experience.

Were you in 5th gear?

If so, what were your RPM's?

I'm "shaking out" a trade in M2, so it's not mine.

Yet.

I was in 5th gear. I never hit a rev limiter.

It just stopped accelerating.

I just couldn't imagine that a bike with engine profile similar to my Uly couldn't go faster than 85MPH.

Throttle was at full open. No more travel to be had.

Bike was in 5th.

No rev limiter hit.

There is something wrong with that bike. I have a 2000 M2 and I can hit 75 - 80 in second gear and third will take me over 100mph easily. I have not wound out in fourth because 120 was fast enough to scare me on a naked. The bike should easily hit 135+

I've leisurely rolled the throttle in 4th and was doing over 80, well below the rev limiter.

Felt like it was just getting up to it's comfortable cruising speed and wanted to go faster.

I second Jim and Oldog's thoughts.

Is the rev limiter a hard limiter or a soft limiter?

Yes, with the stock ignition module it starts to cut out retard ignition timing (soft) about 6000 at 6200 rpm, then cuts hard at the 6500 6800 redline.

Oh yeah, I've had mine up to 125 indicated. I was weighing in at 180 in full gear then, running the factory race intake and the V & H muffler.

Something is amiss FtB. I'm catching huge amounts of wind resistance and the M2 will cruise at 105(indicated)like butter.

I know your handle is Ft bstrd but you can't be that fat.

Should pull 130.

How did it run until 85? Are you getting a full throttle turn?

Ran like a raped ape which is why I am stumped.

I got full throttle pull. It was like it was governed at 85.

I'd guess that you aren't getting full throttle and that's where I'd start the search. In 1st or 2nd gear can you get the RPMs above 5K? You should be able to bump the soft-limit easily in the lower gears...if you're running out of throttle you won't get there.

There's no tach, so I don't know where the RPMs are.

I'll ride it again and see if I can hit the rev limiter in 2nd. If I can hit it, it's not a mechanical limitation of the throttle.

See if the butterfly is all the way open when you have the throttle all the way open.

Also, check for intake leaks. Not that this really sounds like one, but my M2 had an issue with that, so I bring it up.

Intake leak wouldn't affect full throttle performance.

Try downshifting. 80 MPH is cruising speed in 5th gear.

Check air filter. Check timing. Check VOES. Check that brakes are not dragging, that rear brake pedal egos are okay. Check mixture/main jet. Check spark plugs.

Other possibilities include wet sumping, too much oil collecting in crankcase.

Try riding in just spandex? joker

But an intake leak might cause someone to jet the carb way too rich and thus kill top end WOT performance.

I cruise at 80 all day long. Have been to the limit at about 130mph (not stock) and it scares me. 80 to the all mighty ton is just fine for me!

I've hit 75 in third, no problems, with the race kit, Andrews cams and HSR. You've definitely got a problem. Have you checked for exhaust restrictions?

Sounds like you have a definate issue im crossing 80 with ease in third gear. I back off before the bike does. These things get squirly up over 90 so be careful.Only mods I have is a supertrapp slip on and k&n intake.

"I've hit 75 in third, no problems.."

I have easily hit 75 in second and had another 500-700 RPM before bouncing the limiter. I didn't think my X1 is that much different from an M2. I have yet even come close to getting anywhere near the redline in third.
