I'm sort-of guessing that unless it's the gauge cluster for an M2 which is play-and-play that you're going to have to get into wiring individually.
In the owners manual for an M2 it shows the wiring diagram for the tach and speedo sockets. You'll need the book, an AMP terminal crimp tool and all of the individual pin terminal to attach to the bare wire. Maybe bare terminal housings just for the gauge side. I'd wonder if the color coding of the X1 gauges corresponds to the M2 or maybe you'll need an X1 manual to help cross reference.
Seems like it might be a long tedious job hence the $800 dealer quote. 8 hour x $100 or whatever they get. $65 x a day and a half?
You're looking at 1 or two manuals $60-$120, Crimp tool $50-$100, pack of 50 pins $25.
I was thinking about getting gauges individually for my M2 and wiring them myself.
I'm back to thinking about getting an M2 cluster $169 new or $100ish on Ebay.
If the gauges are the same diameter X1 and M2, the gauges and wiring could be swapped into the offset mount. Just a thought. Would be cheaper than $800 for sure.

My M2 has a X1 Tach and Speedo and it plugs into the wiring harness. Notice the Gas pump on the Tach and the Heads on there for the warning light. I am guessing the previous owner just swapped it out because the whole cluster was an X1 when I got it.

When I bought a X1 tach (dash and flyscreen too) for my bike I had to pull a couple pins out of the plug (used a straight dental pick to depress the little metal tab), fed them through something or other and double checked the receiving side of the plug to make sure I was putting them in the right place.

Wasn't too bad, the harness loops through the dash or something, which is why I had to remove the pins. Seems like the tach came without the plug and I just had to figure out what wires went where and pushed into the plug.

Hopefully this is some help to you. Since I didn't buy a kit I don't have instructions, possible the parts manual has some sort of diagram that can help. Post up here if you need more details.

Seems like you're in better shape than I thought. Though, I tend to expect the worst.
It's just a matter of getting hold of the wiring diagrams and realigning the pins to correspond the correct wiring on the m2's harness?
In any case, it's doesn't look like an $800 job. good luck with it... beautiful bike!

daveswan,

thats what im worried about the existing harness on my bike has 3 solid long contacts. the connector off of the wire harness i stole the tach from has 2 rows of contacts in in 6 columns how do i rearrange them and not to mention they are both male connectors im trying to avoid cutting and re splicing wires at all cost, luckily i just bid on a tach/speedo combo on ebay for a 99 m2 the plug in the picture looks like its plug and play i hope i win it.

That was the combo I was looking at! I should have kept my idea to myself! : )
Easier to go that route and sell what you have on EBay so you don't have to screw around with the wires. I was looking at getting individual gauge, I saw some with cut wires and began to think it was a can of worms (doable) but I'd rather spend my time doing something else. These parts aren't that hard to come by yet.

I don't think the plug on your bike's harness is the stock plug. Mine is a 2000 also and has a pin type, not the flat bladed connector you've got pictured.

Course mine was a CA model and has had many of the updated parts installed (primary tensioner being the first thing to mind), so maybe I've got a later model year build...

Just curiosity but does anyone else have plugs that match the first one Brent's got shown?

Brent, is your bike a 1250 or bigger? Profile doesn't say what displacement you went up to with the motor work.

im not quite sure if its after market, like i said i bought my bike off co-part from some kid who wrecked it. i rebuilt it but never changed the electrical maybe an early or late model within the year???. engine wise, when i was almost done rebuilding it i started her up and blew a giant hole in the front of crank case below the rectifier at which point i took it to a professional and asked him to fix it along the way my parts were coming back scarred so i just said while shes having heart surgery make her bigger faster and stronger, i spent the money and went all upgrades (how often do you really have your motor fully apart you know). displacement not sure exactly what its at now i havent dynoed it ever ill call the mechanic hahah i dropped a good $3.3k into the engine and misc. small stuff over the course of a year and a half the mechanic had it. The mechanic said shes pushing around 135/140 hp but from other posts here ive read that sounds outrageous for it to be that high. so i really dont know much hahah!

little,

when you put your x1 gauges on your m2 was it plug and play or will i most likely have to install the sensor myself?

Wow, with that kind of power you've prolly got the 88" engine.

Regarding the tach, plug and play mostly. I received the tack without the plug, so I had to identify where the wires/pins needed to go, but once I'd done that it was easy. Just pushed the pins into the stock plug and it was good to go.

I've read on this board that the connector pins are available at electronics stores like Radio Shack, but have not ever had to verify that. They would be a small crimp on pin (pull blade or spade, not sure of the proper term... connectors, out of the plug, pry off current crimp, clean up and crimp pins back on then push into stock type harness plug). The hard part might be coming up with the stock plug itself. I could probably pull mine apart an go to a local electronics shop and see if they can match pins and plug to be helpful, but since you've already got yours apart...

I bought the tach kit and installed it myself. I may still have the instructions about somewhere. I'll look.

http://www.americanthunderbike.org/techtips/m2tach .php

That link gives instructions and parts for mounting X1 dash and gauges on the M2 BEFORE the tach kit was an option on the M2.

Nice to hear it! I'm exploring ways of putting a tach on my M2 as well besides the factory kit.
I happened across that in my search and now that I know it's easy I have another option!
