lets see where to start... has newer XB wheel/fork which means the speedo doesnt work :/ how can i fix this? only thing i can think of is swapping out the trans and the gauges to XB?
carb has been upgraded and came with the old carb and a bunch of jets
stock motor
intake + V&H pipe


this is gonna be my project bike, gonna take it down to the frame this winter to give me something to do... going big bore kit and some other engine mods

picked it up for $2400

LMK what you think, im a lightning newb and coming from a blast so im pretty clueless at this point.

guy says he dyno'd it at 84rwhp but knows nothing about the bike, all work was done when he bought it. all he did was drop it and put it back together... new paint, primary cover... blinkers are busted and clutch lever is bent so it still needs those

other than that it fires up, and runs/sounds great as far as i can tell...

gonna pull the plugs out asap and i have a set of blast race plugs... can i throw those in?

You can probably use the speedo from an X1, or any Buell that uses an electronic speed sensor. Should be able to find one of those on ebay.

yeah im a little confused on the speedo...

doesnt the xb use a sensor in the trans like my blast? and the S1 is mechanical off the front wheel?

I'm an idiot.

The S1 engine case isn't bored for the sensor, and doesn't have the toothed gear on the tranny output shaft.

If you're tearing it down this winter anyway, you may be able to have the case machined for the sensor and install the appropriate hardware on the output shaft of the tranny. I'm not sure, but you may not even have to split the case. I don't know what it takes to get to that shaft, but the tubers do have a cassette tranny, so it may be possible.


Or you could buy a GPS : )

Ask Phelan, he plans on actually trying to modify the spacers needed or something to be able to use the XB wheels with the mechanical speedo.

But, I'd say don't worry about it, who cares how fast you're going, LOL. It's a sick bike for a sick price.

is the sensor in the transmission? case? possible to use newer XB parts?

i'd like to have a speedo but your right its not needed. i could ditch it in favor of more usefull engine monitors... wideband, cyl head temp, oil temp...

would be pretty bitchin' to use a XB cluster tho i plan on dissasembling the engine this winter so if i have options i can go from there, im just really new to bike motors (have split many vw engines of all kinds)

No, you wouldn't use XB parts, you'd use the 99-02 tuber parts.

Remember there is a S1 Service manual pdf in the knowledge vault. Having hard copy is always nice tough.

The sensor is in the case, directly above the output shaft of the tranny. There's a notched wheel on the shaft (just inside the case behind the front pulley) that provides input to the hall effect sensor. It'll be in the same place that it was on your Blast. You would need to add the notched wheel and a hole for the sensor. I have no idea if the notched wheel will fit in the stock case. It may be easier to convert the front wheel like Phelan is doing. If you're going to take the bike apart anyway, it probably can't hurt to see what it would take.

get a bicycle computer for the speedo until you figure out the case issue. wireless for about $40.

The "read" part of the wheel is not the gear, but it may all be one piece. I wonder if it will fit in a pre 99 case?

The engine cases hold the transmission and the crankshaft. In HD big twins, the engine and transmission are separate boxes. The XL line has a "unitized" transmission, meaning the tranny and engine are in the same case. So yes, when people talk about boring cases, it is the same case that hold the tranny.

The speedo sensor "reads" the teeth on the 5th gear main shaft.

so essentially all I would need to do is ditch my case for a newer (years?) case with the sensor hole and swap something in the trans (5th gear?)

The case could be modified a competent machine shop, I beleive the cases allready have the lug for it.

The XLs went to electric speedos in '00 IIRC, same time they changed the brakes. Sorry it took me so long to post on this thread- great looking bike. I dunno how much my work will help you, though, because I'm using the stock WP ROMA forks on my S2, so the spacing is completely different. I also do not think the speedo drive will fit on the larger XB axle. I know the drive is too wide for my setup, so I'm cutting the spacers off of it. How much room do you have between the wheel and forks? It looks like there's not enough room for even a condensed speedo drive. You're probably better off with trying a different route like the others have mentioned. I know Jodie built a custom sensor setup that runs off his back wheel/axle. You might ask him about that (JoesBuell).

Jodie did that + the Xb arm and shock,

he took the pulses off of a sensor mated to a aftermarket speedo / pod
from the rear brake disk bolts.

actually it would be easy to mount a toothed wheel to either front or rear wheel if you knew the size of the wheel and how many teeth?

ive done this on crankshafts of engines to use a standalone system that uses the same style sensor the XB's use in the tranmissions. crank speed vs. wheel speed but works the same
