im looking at the 99 x1 lightning i might buy, but it has a problem after its been running a while, the owner thinks it might be a bad ignition control module, heres what he discribes its doing:

The mods to the engine are as follows: a screamin eagle air cleaner, buell factory race ECM, d & d exhaust, and a oil breather. The problem starts after riding for about twenty or so miles. Sometimes less sometimes more. What happens is when accelerating it starts to cough or skip and if you let off and the apply the throttle againg it smooths out but when you come to a stop it will start to idle hard. Then the process will repeat. It will do this for a while and then have the urge to want to cut of or stall with a backfire. I have never had to traer it home always made it just with a little trouble. My buddy who I ride with and was behind me said he saw a little white smoke when I would accelerate and could smell gas like it was running too rich. That's about it. Before the twenty or so miles it runs and Idles great.

any ideas? btw it has 20k miles

Sounds like the intake seals might need replacing. Ride it till it starts showing the symptoms, then check for intake leaks with propane, carb cleaner, WD-40 etc. and listen for the RPM to change. Propane is my preferred method as it doesn't get crap all over your engine. Also might be time to reset the TPS and AFV. Is the bike giving any trouble codes?

Has it been doing this with varying ambient temperatures? 20 miles +/- it (the bike and components) should have been warmed up and I would have thought had issues earlier. Intake and exhaust seals been checked?

sounds like intake seals to me too.

They're not hard to replace if you have small fingers, or the right tool.

I would also consider taking a look at the O2 sensor. What you are describing sounds like the problem gets worse during the Closed Loop operation and after there is enough time for the O2 sensor to get up to the temperature. Others all have valid suggestions.

My x1 did the same thing so i changed the head temp sensor and the o2 sensor. I am not sure which one it was but it fixed the problem and they are both cheap fixes. Although i had an Ecm short out that did this very similar thing.

you guys are AWSOME i just might pick this bike up, im just hoping its not a expensive fix.....ive never owed a bike like this but i love the way the look and sound, ill keep you guys updated.

where can i buy these parts online?i want to find out what everything costs before i buy the bike, also whats CHT? would 2500 be a good deal for this bike?

Oh yeah the search bar on the bottom left is were you input the part number and then it will continue on to the screens where you can sign up. I like to mess with the hd parts guys and call them for a part and they never have it( big surprise) And i go ohh man really, And they say i can order it! So i say how long to get it? And how much. they say a week, So i say dam it i need it now. They say sorry, And i say well let me see how much money i got and what is that part number so you don't have to look it up when i call back to order it! Usually i know who the pissy parts guy is and ask for him by name! lol

try the sponsors here on badwebb they "they keep the lights on" and in the case of American Sport Bike they are invaluable for prompt shipment of parts, no part # required

cht = cylinder head temperature
rear cylinder, typicaly down the chimney

what you are willing to pay for it is the deal
if it has been neglected or abused ownership may be a bit expensive initialy.

Jim, '01-'02 cht are down in the hole.
'99-'00 are right next to spark plug, easy access no need to remove seat/tank.

Engine Temp - 32564-99YB $35.40
Intake Seals - 26995-86B $2.45/each (2 needed)
Seals - 29539-99Y $12.50/each (2 needed)

the bike its self looks very clean well maintained.
i might be picking it up today for 2.3k

O2 sensor should be available at your local auto parts store, late '80s Chevy PU.
Bosch # 12014, about $20.00.


Unless you remove the intake horn off the throttle body you can get by with one 29539-99Y.

So you guys say that the 29539-99Y piece is definitely not reusable once you take the TB off the intake? Just asking since I am about to wrestle the task.

there are 2 of these used on the TB as JR points out the front one on the horn,
( infront of the butter-fly valve ) does not have to be removed, you may if you want re-use the rear one, typicaly they get cut on re-instal YMMV IF you are replacing the TB you must remove the "horn" from the front,
the TB casting is quite soft be careful about what you push on or against.

One more tip make sure it is lined up when pressed on\in, It can't be rotated once on there, Ask me how i know.

Much appreciated folks. This information is truly priceless and I hope Edgar finds it useful as much as I do since no thread hijacking was intended.
With the rainy forecast out here on the east coast, I know what I'll be doing this Saturday...take the TB off the bike and then the wait for the part to come in, hopefully by the end of next week.

P.S. I went ahead and ordered the L0501.2 front ISO along with the TB as well.

ok guys well heres a update,
i bought the bike, the o2 had already been repalced. the head temp sensor,looked new from the out side,but the wire is peeled off somewhere before the plug. which leads me to belive its not new. also i took the sensor off and looked at it and too me it seem as if something it missing on the tip of it below is a pic of what it looks like,

i checked the intake seals at the head and there is defintly a leak there. sparying a good amount of carb cleaner will stall the motor.
i took it for a test drive to see for myself what its doing. i will NOT rev up smoothly it just goes up a few RPMS cuts out backfires and the jerks up again and then cuts out again.and will keep doing that in any gear,
it will kinda rev freely in neutral.

im about to order the intake seals, still not sure if i should get the temp sensor too. the dude said he replaced it too, but it doesnt really loook new.
check out the pic and tell me if thats what it should look like

if you can afford it do it peace of mind

the tool to install that is a slotted 1/2 inch deep socket its worth the effort to get a cheap one and slot it with a saw

+1 on peace of mind. It is one less thing to worry about.

That wire looks awfully frayed at the sensor.

As a rule of thumb, If you are going to (shotgun) the bike with parts do all the little sensors and cheap fixes first.

Here is what i found when i removed the intake off my X1



Sorry it was a cell phone pic.
While you are in there check the injector o-rings also. Get a ECM spy cable so you can do your Throttle position sensor reset and read trouble codes, Also you can run diagnostics in ecm spy to figure out what is wrong.

well i comfirmed with the preivious owner that hey did replace the head. temp. sensor, as well as the 02 and intake air sensor, i have the the intake seals coming and the ECMspy cable too. i hope i can figure out how to use it.

i ordered the seals from bikerbobsstore.com
cuz it was alot cheaper, but seems like theyre not gonna ship until 10 days.
i think i might cancel the order and just get them from somewhere else

If these have been changed and the intake seals don't fix it look to the ECM itself. I have an extra ECM (stock) If you need it i payed $40 for it. Well i did exactly what you did changed it all and every time i changed something it got worse or better or different. Ok this is gonna sound weird! I pulled out the Ecm and smelled it. It was fried and smelled of burned plastic. Upon further inspection i found carbon tracking on the pins that read the o2 sensor. On a ride one time i forgot to tighten the o2 sensor enough and it came loose and that is when i think it shorted out the ECM, The o2 is a grounding point for the system. The fried ecm would run the bike fine under 3k rpm and would also cough horribly when the bike would heat up and try to go into open loop.

well im still waiting for the intake seals. i have ecmspy & cable now.

i just have to do some more reading, to figure out what stuff means and how to use the program,
if anyone whats to give me some pointer or tips, id really apresiate it.

Make sure you read the Tuning Guide for the ECMSPY. It will give you step by step on how to get hooked up, etc.
