It's about time to replace my air filter - I have an '02 S3T with injection.

What do you guys/gals think about just using the K&N rechargeable filter instead of getting another throw-away filter? Would the extra flow allowance of the filter allow too much air and go beyond the factory-stock mapping, resulting in (maybe) a lean condition?

I'd really like to do the slip on with race ECM, but big $$$ are scarce at the moment.

Thanks for any insight!
Dennis

I just put one in my 02 S3T. I would think the O2 sensor would take care of a lean condition, but I could be wrong. I have'nt run it yet. It's still cold and nasty here by Lake Erie.

The K&N by itself is ment to allow more airflow within the parameters of the FI system. Its when the K&N is used with other mods like exhaust or head work ect ect ect that it becomes an issue, Just switching to a K&N on a stock bike will not be a problem.

If you hear pinging, you're hurting it. If it doesn't ping, (mine pinged with the stock exhaust) check your plugs after a while and look for an indication that it's running lean. I recommend getting the race ECM if you are running an aftermarket exhaust.

O.K. - the K&N is in.... I went for a test ride 34 miles - no hiccups or anything. I swear the bike seems to pull just a bit harder. Glad I did it - I'm going to run 500 miles more or so and check the plugs.

Also, the top end (rocker box area) on this bike really runs hot! I added a JAGG oil cooler right after I got the bike ('02), probably helped some ... but it's actually hard to gauge how much. I took one of those HD temp oil dipsticks for a sporter and put a curve in the thermal-couple so it would fit into my oil tank - bending the thermal-couple probably affects the cailbration/accuracy of the temp reading - so far, the temp is getting up to 170 range - even if that was accurate, 170 is probably less than ideal for optimum oil temp.

......stay tuned.......

i agree, i have the Suppertrapp IDS, and the K&N with Gutted Air-box, and the stock ECM, and my bike runs fine but i have replaced the O2 sensor 2 times, and i hvae been told repeatedly to get the RACE ECM, but convincing the wife isn't easy.. i guess getting the Cylinders re-built will be a good argument.. ha ha ha

Blackbelt, might I suggest you buy it without telling your wife? My wife knew I was putting on my race kit when she opened the garage door and saw me unboxing all the stuff Dave Stueve sent me ....

I have an S3T and put a K&N filter on it. It seems to run fine and seemed to have a little more power. However, it sometimes "ping's or knocks" when I "get on it". I am not sure what to do about this as I do not like that noise. Any suggestions? BTW. It only started doing this after I put on the new air filter.
