Alright, so I am about to order the parts so that I can replace my intake seals and do the "proper" jetting on my cv carb, but I want to make sure I get the right parts. I have a borla exhaust(I also have a V&H) and a race air cleaner on my S1. From what I understand I want a 190 main jet and a 45 pilot. I havent dove in yet but I did check the manual and it says the cv comes stock with a 195 main, I would think that this would be just fine, am I wrong? It also says that the pilot/idle is a 42, I see the advantage in going up to a 45, anyone have any experience with going up to the 48, or is the 45 the magic number?

Now for the intake manifold seals, I figure I will just get the kit from Al at American Sport Bike, it has the two intake seals, the seal for the carb to the intake and some other seal, is it worth the extra 10 bucks? Do I need to get the speacial alan head tool? and finally any pointers out there for doing the procedure(I recall a debate on whether or not to use some sort of lube to 'ease' assembly)

thank you all for your input, as always, your advice is invaluable, and greatly appreciated!

I haven't tried a 48. I have 45 and it works for me.

While you're taking it apart I would replace all 3 seals. Carb/Intake and both Intake/Head connections. You need the tool unless you grind off the short side of a regular allen wrench to make it shorter. I just ground one down.

I know lubed mine a little with motor oil but others will chime in. You want to make sure you tighten them up a little on both sides at a time so one doesn't pull on the other too much.

Test fit the carb so you can get the up + down angle right. You can move it a little before it's tight. Search on here for lots more info.

I have a force pipe and force winder intake...I just put in a 190/48 combo...
Runs great but is a bit rich on the bottom end...I'll end up putting my 45 back in to clear up the boottom end some.

I have 2 bikes. S2 (thunderstorm top end and cams), stock S2 oval carbon fiber filter with leading edge cut back to expose more filter, Buell race muffler adapted to stock 2" header, Buell race ignition box for S1W (to match the thunderstorm top end bits). 45/190/2.5 turns works fine.

I also have a 98 S1W, stock thunderstorm engine. When it had a stock 2" header, V&H SS2R can, race air filter (oval CF), and race igntion, the same thing worked great - 45/190/2.5 turns. I recently swapped to a 2.5" Buell race header and muffler (left the rest alone) and the damned thing would NOT idle unless I had the choke out, regardless of where I put the idle cable setting (by the way, an awesome addition and since you'll have the carb off anyway, order 27347-96Y for $32 if you don't already have the little knob adjuster - it beats the hell out of the hard-to-reach screw setup). 3.5 turns on the screw didn't do it. Put in a 48 slow jet, went back to 2.5 turns...perfect.

Jets are like fingerprints. You won't blow anything up (well, unless you're waay too lean), so feel free to experiment. For most folks, 45/190 is magic. My S1W seems to want the 48 (idles rock solid now, and runs AWESOME).

For the intake work....the kit is nice. The other seal he includes is probably the filter housing to carb inlet seal, circular with four holes in it. A little lube on the seals is a good idea. The tool is an AWESOME idea unless you like swearing like a sailor, cutting down an existing 1/4" allen wrench, dropping stuff, and tightening allen screws 1/16 of a turn at a time. I also cheat on my install - I put a schmear of hi temp RTV on the edge of the intake (at the carb) and *then* put the carb boot on. That way next time the carb comes off (like when the bike flat insists it needs a 48 slow jet, lol), the boot stays on the intake. But a glaze of engine oil to make things slick cuts down on seal bunching / leaks.

48 pilot is for big bore kits, BIG cams and/or head work.

from what I've read on you guys that use the carbs, 45 is perfect for almost all bolt-on 1200s.

but from what I understand, the main jet all depends on elevation/engine mods... am I right?

i broke it apart and found a 48 slow jet up in there, i guess i'll drop it down to a 45 and see what happens, but what about the 195 main, is it that important to drop that down to a 190? I dont understand the benefit, i would think you would want to be on the richer side?

Try the 190. Bigger isn't always better. I run a 185.

I got the stock main, but wound up with a 48 slow, I'm at virtually sea level, and I might be a tad rich. No mods other than breather, and for a while difference aftermarket mufflers, but running stock at the moment. Runs good but gas mileage is poor. Probably should change to a 45 or 46.
I bought one of each step I could find, 45, 46, 48 just in case, and some mains too, but I forget which now.

all done and back from the test spin and all I have to say is "SEXY!" The ground down allen wrench worked perfectly, that is after I followed the manuals instructions of removing the tank and ignition mount bracket! I put the 190 main and 45 slow jets in and backed off the mixture screw 2.5 turns and boy is it running beautifully, no more scavenging backfires on downshifts at all, and silky smooth cruising and idling. Thanks for all the help and ideas everyone!

Jayvee, I had the 48 slow and stock 195 main jets in mine and I am at about sea level, I recommend the tried and true combo that I just installed. Plus it doesnt look to be too bad to interchange 'em with the carb still mounted

Great! Glad it worked.

Jayvee try the 45. I'm at sea level.
