I've been reading up a little on different ignition systems and have a couple newb questions. Do FI and carb bikes use a similar ignition system, or is the coil on my FI bike the equivelant of the ignition on a carbed bike?

Also is there any worthwhile benefit to single fire?

Coil may be only thing even a bit similar. X-1 uses different timing cup, ecm, etc than carbed bike. Single fire on all my carbed bikes seemed to make them run smoother.

Think of it this way:

Single fire fires the front plug. Then the rear plug. Then the front. Then the rear. All based on the timing settings.

Dual fire, fires *both* plugs at *each* timing cue. Front cylinder firing time? Both plugs pop. Rear cylinder firing time? Both again.

Single fire sends all the available energy to the *one* plug that requires it, instead of spreading it between the pair.

I got the exact same setup that Aaron tested there, but a piece at a time offa eBay. Paid less than a $100 total for the coil and Dyna2000. At those prices it seems reasonable. Not for the regular retail prices, not at my level of modifications.
Seems like it works at least as good as the regular Buell 'Race Ignition' module, when other performance mods don't amount to much (K&N & slip-on.) It does make it sound different, a bit less 'Harley-ish', idles a bit better. But it's MUCH less noticable to the 'seat of the pants' than changing from the stock muffler to a SuperTrapp IDS.
