I've got a line on buying a 2000 S3, I've only seen a picture of it, and it looks pretty nice... Its got 25K miles, and they are asking $2K... I see a lot of S2 stuff, but not much S3 info... What's the difference between the S2 and S3? I'm going to go check it out on Wednesday... Anything specific I should check? I've always liked the looks of the S models, and rode one of the first ones when Eric had the white S models out at the Grand Prix in Laguna Seca a long time ago... I've wanted one of those ever since, just never got around to it... Is there also a T model, or was THIS the T model... There's no bags, or bracketry for bags, or leg fairings on it... If you could spout me some wisdom on this I'd appreciate it... Thanks! | ||

The S3T has bags,lower fairings,and 1-1/2" taller handlebars. | ||

Sounds like a steal at $2K! There is plenty of S3 info here, just dig a little deeper. You will love it, I love my 99 and it has been a great bike  | ||

Wow... check to see if title is clear and if it looks like it's never been dropped. This is one of those that just sounds too good to be true. Do you live close enough to check it out without hundreds of miles? | ||

I don't believe there is anything different between an '99 and newer S3 and a S3T, same frame, etc...except the items you mentioned, and if you need them, they show up for sale on occasion. I have a '99 S3 which was ordered new with all the S3 stuff - there was no S3T in '99. The S3T was reintroduced in '00. For me it is an ideal machine...responsive light, nimble. You can work on it & parts are available. It has beautiful lines..kind of like eye candy that grows on you. They have the capability of being long rideable, and comfortable too. Ergonomics are fine! | ||

2000 is fuel injected and has the thunderstorm engine; should have had the upgraded shock and associated hardware done, may still have the old style "boomarang" shifter... can't remember the other updates or recalls at the moment. Oh yeah, if it's clean and runs well, well it is eight years old and has 25K on it so maybe the price isn't all that "too good to be true". Especially with money being tight for some these days, non-essentails get sold quick when you have to pay the mortgage. OK, I pulled the trigger... Got it, rode it the 75 miles to the house at about 80 ~ 85 mph, and it ran like a champ... At low speeds, it feels like the belt is slipping, so I have to figure out how to adjust the belt... It didn't come with an owners manual, so I have to get me one of those... Is there a PDF of an owners manual around?  | ||

belt slippage unlikely. clutch slippage more likely. adjust ramp mechanism and cable as outlined in factory service manual. YOUR FIRST SHOP PURCHASE SHOULD BE A FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. until you buy one, just search the knowledge vault (i have a post somewhere in there, if i recall correctly)for clutch adjustment everyone is willing to help, but ALWAYS check the knowledge vault (the ultimate in FAQs)before seeking help, as it will make everything easier | ||

Check with Buellistic for instructions on the best way to adjust your belt. The factory-recommended method will result in a too-tight belt that can cause damage. Enjoy your S3, they are great bikes. | ||

Email sent to Buellistic... I love this thing (so far)... It gets an A in style points alone... It is advanced in some ways, and pretty stone age in others... MUCH different than anything else I've ridden lately. BUT, it is comfortable (which is a requirement nowadays)... (Why modern motorcycles got away from the flat motorcycle seat is beyond me... I don't see how anyone can do more than a couple of hundred miles on a "modern" U cut-out motorcycle seat.) I've got some work to do for sure, but it is mostly there... Its got the PM wheels and a Supertrapp pipe on it... I haven't really had time to give it a good look yet, but I'm off on Monday / Tuesday, so hopefully Ill have some play time available... | ||

good looking bike, and it sounds like you got a great deal! for an X1, you want the belt loose enough to barely touch the bottom of the swingarm when you apply pressure. Should be about the same on an S3, but buellistic will know for sure. | ||

Buellistics instructions are posted under "ADJUSTMENTS: Drive Belt and Primary Chain" I've always heard to adjust the belt "scary loose". The instructions seem to support that. From Fasted's recommendation, have you tried to find instructions for clutch adjustment? Let me know if you need a hand. Someone once noted that PM=Polish Me. It's a love 'em or hate 'em affair. I love 'em. Get some Simichrome if they haven't been polished for awhile. Mothers is fine if they've been kept up. If you go for a polishing ball, the smaller one fits the rims better if you don't have cheap labor.  | ||

On the PM wheels... They haven/t been cleaned in a LONG time... I couldn't even tell they were the PM rims til I rubbed some of the oxidation off of them... They are a "project"... I looked for the directions on clutch adjustment, but I didn't have much luck... My manual should be here Tuesday or so... I'd appreciate all the help I can get! | ||

Congratulations on a very nice bike-- nice buy -- I have a 2000 as well and it's a hoot-- Expect to do some wrenching as you will have occasional nagging issues. Just when you sort one out and are enjoying how well it runs another one will pop up. But Buells are real motorcycles and not Japanese appliances. The handling, feel, looks, and pride of ownership are worth the cost of occasional problems. The Supertrapp and the intake are nice additions. I assume the P/O also added the Race ECM -- if not I'd highly recommend it. I'd also be sure it has the updated front exhaust hanger -- If you're new to Buells or Harleys checking the oil is different than on other vehicles -- I found that one out the hard way -- Welcome to the madness -- |
