I'm 50 years old. I started riding when I was 14 or 15 on and off all them years.
I can honestly say TODAY was the 1st time I ever really rode a motorcycle.

I got to bring my 2001 M2 Cyclone home today. It was pretty chilly out but I didnt care Id rode it naked. I almost was way I was dressed. I got it home and layered up on clothing and ended up putting a 100 miles on her today.

Bike is seven years old only had 797 miles on it.
Woohoo now she has 897.

Batteries in my camera are dead or Id took pictures. Trust me they are in the charger now.
Man it was awesome.

my brother emailed me on a wednesday night about 5 years ago telling me to call a guy near here about a low mileage 99 m2.

i'd never ridden a bike that was such an unexplainably instant gotta-have. it was in the garage that sunday.

Man Fasted.
I can believe that. Some reason this bike bite me the 1st time I seen it.

Its taken me a couple months of hagglin but here she sets.

I actually paid for the bike last Monday. But due to inclement weather and the simple fact she wouldnt start. I left it there.
Anyway long story short a window of opportunity opened up just long enough to ride her home.
What a ride... Trust me..Its one I'll never forget

A picture (1"x1") was posted in Cycle Trader Magazine from a used Harley dealer. My buddy, a 900 Monster owner, and I tried to make out what it was in the tiny picture and thought we'd better make the hour drive to Arlington Tx to get a better look. When we arrived the salesman took us to the back of the lot where this 96 S1 was sitting out in the rain. My buddy and I looked at this thing and I said "holy $hit, I'll take it". Saleman asked if I wanted to ride it first. "No", I said. Loaded it up in the van and the rest is history. LLtT! Long Live the Tuber!

I can relate to that, Sstlouisjak, the moment I laid eyes on mine I "had to have it".
Bought it unridden , and once I did I couldn't stop grinning and still can't, and that was 3 years ago.

Buellfighter what year was that(When you found the bike). And yes I agree I have said that before (A Sportster On Steroids). But Firebolt I was Choppin or Bobbin Harleys in the late 70's. And I built a "49" 45 cid but it took 3 years.(Or more) This was back in about 1988. Aw who cares. It was fun and kept me out of trouble.

Oh man Thank you guys... I am so glad to find out I'm not the only one got bite like I did.
I cant believe Im such a moron to lose one of my keys though.

When I went to the dealer yesterday morning to see if my girl had been started.
I had been told they would call me if it was ready to go. (which they hadnt)

I wasnt ready to ride when I got there but since it was running there was no stop'n me.
I needed a new helmet anyway. All they had were girl coats or Id got one of them too.
I figured it was warm enough out.
So off I went in a sweat shirt over a t-shirt.( No coat ) and one layer of pants.

It might have been around 30 but the wind was blowing like crazy. But there was no ice on the road cause it warmed up over night and rained. But temps were drop'N.

I only live 30 miles from the place. 20 miles into it I was almost to far cold. I had to stop to warm up.

If your ever around this area I stoped in a place called route 66 cafe in Cuba Missouri.
They looked at me like I was nuts when I walked in, but was very welcome with a warm cup of coffee. I was almost to cold to get my helmet off.

I was so thankful. My adrenalin was rushing Ah man...She looked so good set'n out side route 66 cafe.

Anyway some how after I got home and found a ride to get me back to Rolla to pick up my car.
Which was a lot warmer to ride home in but not near as much fun.
I found out I lost the key I used for that classic trip.

In case I cant find it . Can I get another one made? I never seen a round key before.

I notice a rattle towards the end of my ride and seen 3 screws were missing out of the air box side of the small fender above the rear tire. 2 are gone from the side of it and the one goes towards the shock center.
(lol) guess I'm not the only one with a few missing screws. my bike is too..

On the other side it still as a brake line clamped to it. It has a star key head. I figured the ones that are missing did to.

I looked in the service manual and havent been able to find anything about that small plastic fender. Will any screw work or is it a trip to the Harley dealer ?

OH YEAH.. another thing I was wondering. This guy has Honda 10w 40 in her. I noticed in the book it said not to switch oil. Can I change it to Royal Purple without any ill effects? I need some screws to.

What a ride... What a bike...What a moron losing his key...

Is break in time 1000 miles or 1500. The guy has told me both now. My bike has 897 miles on her.
The way the paper work looks the guy had it since 2005 and only put 55 miles on it.

The title says date 1st purchased was 01/12/05 but its odometer was 735 Actual.

The inspection slip done last 08/06/08 Its mileage was 790. Day I paid for her,she had 797 miles

Im not sure when or who put them 735 miles on her. And since its been so long and its got HONDA oil. whats a guy to do..?

I thought break in was at 1000. You can switch to royal purple with no ill effects. Congrats on the tuber!

Buell_bert, I found my S1 back in July of 2001. I was racing TCCRA cross-country events and taking a break from street bikes when my buddy at work bought a Duc. 900 Monster and talked me in to a street bike. We had a blast modding them. A long strange trip it's been.

Wow....your story brings back memories!! I rode my M2 in February in Wisconsin the day I bought it. I froze my ass off......by I was so high on that bike I didn't care. Here it is seven years later and it just keeps gettin' better! Welcome to our twisted addiction!

Thanks Captainkirk for the welcome and the understanding.
Yesterday I rode her to the gas station was going to fill her up and add some sta-bil to the gas.
While I was standing in line to pay for the gas this guy ask me if I was riding the bike.
I said "yeah" rather proudly. mind you its only 20 something out.
He said " Man that just isn't right ! "
I said " You put 1203 cc's between your legs see if it dont warm you up"' lol . He just shook his head and walked off.
I only rode her 50 miles yesterday. But I did take her to the car wash.
I also found my other key I'd lost, which was a relief. It was in my friends truck who gave me a ride to get my car.

The 3 screws that were missing out of my small rear fender got replaced with 2 out of the bottom belt guard.I think they are longer then they need to be. But I used lock tight on them (Blue)

I noticed yesterday she did a lot of coughing not really back firing but not really running right either. I noticed it mostly in low speeds kinda idling in 1 st.

I'm real close to the 1000 break in. I think I'll check into getting the carb rebuilt. I was also thinking about getting a different type breather for her. Any recommendations?

Yes, rebuild the carb and clean it up. Replace all seals and also check your throttle and idle cable. Might want to check the plugs as well and the condition of the plug wires. Great looking bike. I always like that color. Welcome to the madness of Buell ownership.

When using high pressure water to clean the bike be very careful of the bearing seals and carb area.

I appreciate the complements, the welcome to the madness, and the information what to look for and about washing her under high pressure.

I was a little leary about washing her yesterday. 1 st cause it was so cold. 2nd I was afraid it might be hard on something.

So I did stay back from the air box and the heads and such. Mostly I washed the under side of her and the fenders.

If I hadnt got so much road yuck on her from the day before. Id left it until it warmed up some.

Yeah, I really like the color also. I got a flat black fulmer helmet. Was easier to match up the black then the paint color.

Sadly, I "close up shop" for the winter when the first salt comes out, and don't drag Buellosaurusrex back out until after the first hard rain of the spring season. Just my rules, is all. I can't blame you for your addiction....that first winter was hell, knowing what lurked in the garage waiting for warmer weather. You have a treat waiting for you this spring, my friend!!
The coughing sounds like the dreaded "Keihin Cough", remedied somewhat by larger pilot jet, opening the pilot screw a bit (or both) or installing the DynoJet Thunderslide kit. Better yet, just replace the dang thing with an HSR42 Mikuni and your troubles will be over.

I like a clean bike but avoid high-pressure washing because it can get into places where water shouldn't be.

Car wash soap can cause corrosion on electrical connections and can displace grease in wheel bearings, etc.

I can see why it was a good idea this time but it might be good to follow up with lubrication and drying to keep bad things from happening.

I usually just wash with a garden hose with no spray nozzle, some orange oil-based cleaner to cut the crud, and dry with a shop vac on exhaust.

Hope you enjoy your new-to-you M2 for a long time to come.

Dennis,

You can get the official workshop manual and parts manual from Al at American Sport Bike. They will prove invaluable.

Also, the proper way to adjust the drive belt is not explained in the manual. Check the Knowledge Vault for a post by Lafayette Jenne' (Buellistic) for a complete explanation.) Adjusted the way he explains, belts will last a very long time.

I hope you enjoy your M2L as much as I enjoy mine. They are really great bikes.

I've got the official factory manual on her.
Which is really informative, but I'd still like to have the owners manual.

Mostly cause I haven't seen it and would like to.

The guy I got her from said he has it some place but can't find it. He says this is a lot better then it anyway.( Meaning the OFM.)

What I was wondering is; you said there are 2 manual's,one parts, one work shop.

Does this mean that there are actually 3 manuals? Or is the owners manual one of the two?

I will have to check out American Sports Bike to see what they have.

Ok I'm editing this part to state that the manual I have is : 2001 M2/M2L Cyclone Service Manual part number 99491-01Y

I tell you what man... I really do appreciate you all on this web site for the vault of information that is here.

Plus you guys rock, I feel like I gained more then just a great bike, but a bunch great people who share the same thrill.
Its a passion and I thank you for sharing it with me.

I turned 51 today.. Guess I feel kinda sentimental.

Dennis, Happy Birthday! I am getting ready for one in a couple of days.

There is the Service Manual, the parts manual and the owners manual. The owners manual is good to have from a historical perspective and there is some good info in there on suspension setup etc.

The service manual tells you how to do stuff and the parts manual gives you the part numbers for everything on your bike. The parts manual also has great pics that show you how stuff goes together. I recommend the Service Manual first, the parts manual second and the owners manual third.

If you think this site is great wait until you go to a Buell event. They are fantastic! I went to Homecoming last summer and had a the time of my life. Just being around that many Buells is something special.
