I tried to search for any threads or similar topics but came up empty. So I'm hoping that some Buell veterans here can help me out.

I have a 2002 X1 that I have stripped down, no side scoops or air box. I LOVE how it looks except for one thing... I can't stand how the tank cover looks on the edges (you all know what I'm talking about). So, what are my options for swapping other Buell tanks, I want to stick with the large/manta-ray tanks with internal fuel pump but an actual one-piece tank.

HELP!

Nick

Im not sure if a manta tank will fin an x1 or not but one way to fix the looks of the one you have the trim pices that American sport bike sells for the x1's they come in either cf or paintable fg.

I've considered those trim pieces... but I don't think they look that good, and I've heard that the fit and finish can be a nightmare

I've been running a set of cf tank trims from American Sportbike on my X1W for a couple years. No issues with installation, they improved the looks 100%.

Should be able to run a 99+ model year S3 tank, I have no idea if the seat will match up. I'll post some pics of how a manta tank mounts to S3's and M2's (mine is a 98 S3 on my 00 M2).

Last one. Since the S3 is injected the fuel pump shouldn't be a problem. I bought a 98 S3 tank, the petcock wouldn't mount up to a FI bike (bought one of those tanks at one point too).

I think you are on the right track there, Buggles. The next fix would be a custom seat, which wouldn't be bad, the stock x1 looks nice but is uncomfortable.

I once saw a guy that having the same dilema and went a different route by taking the tank cover off all together and sanding, smoothing and painting the plastic tank underneath.

Anyone heard /seen of this? maybe help me out with a link because I can't find it.

The only issue you may have with running the cell as the stand alone tank is the fact the seat is going to look popped up. The lines won't match. But if you take measurements, you could cut down the lip on the seat to make a more seamless finish.... (By cutting seat, I mean the frame and trimming foam with the leather off, and re stapling foam on it.

You are in luck on the manta ray question. I have an x1 frame in the basement and a s1w manta tank in the shed. Will mount and take pics for ya tomorrow.

I put the s1 tank on the x1 frame, and this is what I found...

The s1 tank is a tad longer near the rear. The x1 has 2 bolts that hold down the tank with a strap and has a hole for the seat. The s1 of course has 1 hole and the frame holds the seat. The project is feasable...... but you would have to make a custom bracket to hold down the tank (It would have to be bolted through hole in frame that pre-exists using a nut underneath, the hold down bracket for the s1 needs modified/replaced with custom piece. Seat pan best option would be fiberglass. It looks like a difficult clash of lines.......

You cant paint the tank under the cover, that's why it has a cover, the tank will bubble the paint. Been there tried that,it was ugly.

Perhaps the answer is to fab up a custom cover instead?

I personally didn't care enough about the appearance of the missing side panels to do anything about it.
It makes it more easy to get at the engine anyways.

There IS out there, an aluminum fuel cell for the X1... I think that would look badass...

I've seen the alum ones, would be bad ass if you scuffed up the alum tail to match (SEXY!)

OR, polished all the alloy on the bike, just leaving the frame colored...

You could even get creative with some masking tape, and a low pressure media blaster(with a fine tip), and blast some designs in there..
