Hi, this is my first thread. I just got a 2000 X1 and love it and want to know what you all think are the most important, non-bodywork mods. (Message edited by matrim on November 17, 2008) |

Um..... Exhaust is nice to have, brand isnt all that important, although I've had bad experiences with the durability of the V&H aluminum can. Intake is a no brainer. Forcewinder or put a K&N in the stock box.... Race ECM would be cool too. Congrats on the buy! |

Most important mods? A proper service with good oil, proper timing, new fuel filter, and fresh plug wires. Then, unless they're new, I'd get a set of new tires! |

Sticky tires, free flowing air cleaner, and free flowing exhaust ... Everything else is preventive maintenance ... |

I've had issues with the IAT sensor placement in the forcewinder. It gets heated up as the engine cools so if I try riding in short spurts (like a poker run) it doesn't like to start with a bad air temp reading from the hot IAT. FW looks a lot better than the stock helmholtz box IMO but if I had it to do over again, I'd stick with the stock airbox and a K&N filter. I've used both the V&H aluminum exhaust, and a D&D. The V&H WILL need repacked about every 5000 miles or it starts to sound like crap and lose performance. BUT the D&D is steel and will rust if not cleaned regularly, so pick your poison. D&D is also not the can to go with if you're concerned about noise levels. Mine sets of car alarms with ease. |

Hi Matrim, welcome to the world of Buell I'd agree with all the above, and if running an aftermarket exhaust and intake I'd try and get the Race ECM if not already fitted. The X1's really seem to run well with them. Post some pics of your new toy! cheers, chili |

Supertrapp exhaust system. All stainless, no rust,no junk,no packing. All good! A little pricey but WELL worth it. Lap-top and VDSTS program(minimum). Fresh tires! as often as possible. Always ride it like you stole it! |

lol, Yes get the race ecm. My bike ran so much better with it. And that little bit more of rpms is a huge difference, I have the suppa trap exhaust, k and n intake billet round one. |

Thanks for all the input guys. What exactly does the race ecm do for you? |

The race ecm raises the redline by a couple hundred rpm (not sure what the stock OR race ECM redline is at because I try never to hit it) It will also come with fuel maps that are better suited for running an aftermarket intake and exhaust. If you change the intake and exhaust while still running a stock ECM with stock fuel maps, your fuel/air mixture will be a little lean causing the engine to run hot. |

The race ecm raises the redline by a couple hundred rpm Err No. I have both and have checked. the stock air box lets dirt in, off it. I second the super trap There is a version of the FW intake for the FI bikes, put the iat sensor in the filter, dont bother with the FMC breathers, get some banjo bolts, and a cheap catch can Must do items, Check that the mixture is good (plugs) on your bike ECM spy negates the need for a race ecm,and is needed for routine maint. after seeing that the PM items & recalls are checked and done. bronze oil pump gear, spring plate in the clutch. wheel bearings, Oh yeah Run the belt loose, Ride it like you stole it WELCOME TO THE MADNESS. |

Get a works or Penske shock setup for you and have the forks upgraded with springs for your weight and valving like race techs gold valves. Then a track day course. Joe |

Welcome to the madness -- These bikes are like the bad girl you dated in high school -- you knew she wasn't real dependable and was high maintainance -- but she was fast and fun -- The EFI models really do not run properly unless you let them breathe -- You REALLY need -- Race ECM -- Exhaust (I like my Supertrapp) -- Intake (I have the XR2 Forcewinder) -- when you install these the bike will run cooler, faster and be much more dependable -- |

This is probably a stupid question, but what is the difference between the race ecm and the power commander? |

Race ECM is a whole ECM. A power commander modifies the pulse width of the injectors. Very crude, not going to need it for bolt ons. If you hit the point of mods to need it, there are better alternatives. There's a reason PC doesn't support tube frames, and hasn't for a long time. The PCII was a pain in the butt. |
