I have one of those transparent filters...
Are there any special tricks/tips when changing the filter other than the usual "common sense" stuff...

Uh, what kind of pressure is the filter rated for??

These bikes are fuel injected, and I wouldnt use a filter rated at less than 70psi burst...

WHAT CHASE SAID THE NORMAL PRESSURE IS 50 PSI A GLASS FILTER WILL NOT TAKE THAT PRESSURE. !!

I Intentionaly caps locked that We work with high pressure sight glass
I am trained on how to properly install it

the after market filters with glass or plastic inserts that I have seen are too light and will not with stand that pressure
If used you can expect a VIOLENT rupture with Shrapnel to with stand that kind of pressure the wall will be better than 1/8" thick and the glass will likely be a borosilicate.

Those plastic filter packages do say,

"NOT FOR USE ON FUEL INJECTED VEHICLES".

Perhaps this will be an example of Darwinism?

BTW what's the normal time frame to change them? Mine has the recalled filter that the '99's had recalled back in '00 or '01. I've not had any problems so I haven't fooled with it.

Who is not to say that you can not back flush it and keep on using it if it does not leak gas(body of filter) where it is put together ???

fuel filter is cheap and easy change. i have 3500 miles and i changed mine.

Folks, thanks for all the input/warning.
The bike came with the "see-through" filter (located in the fuel line, left side near the frame rail) when I bought it a few months ago. The bike had 9500 miles so it's probably been there for only a few K miles. So, should I just get rid off it before it blows up ?! The bike runs fine but I don't see any fuel in the filter which I thought was little strange..

Sounds like it's in the right location. I'd advise getting one with the proper psi rating...hang on let me go get the manual...Well, it doesn't say anything specific about the filter, ie part numbers or brand etc. It does say to replace every 24,000 miles and that fuel in the downstream supply line is under 49psi of pressure which is the same pressure setting of the fuel pump. In other words, don't forget to purge before you remove it. This came out of a 1999 service manual, I have no idea if anything changed for the 2000 model. I do know Buell had a recall on some fuel filters because mine was one of them, put on what looked like a big 'ol Chock Full O' Nuts coffee can.

The one I have is less than 2" diameter and about 3" long with a 1/4" thick transparent polyuretane wrapped around it.
Wow, you say size of a coffee can?!! I am not sure a coffee can will even fit in that space! Well, I will check with the American Sport Bike folks and see what they have.
As for purging, not sure I understand what you mean...I figured I will just block the end of the hose from the tank, take the old filter out and put the new one in...Anything else?

the OEM filter is a wix, filter pn ??

its a little bigger thank a D battery.

Glad that the filter plastic / Glass did not fail you may be could run it for years
how ever when it fails it will go "boom" throwing Gas and plastic,

Pruging is to remove the pressure from the line, in a nut shell,

remove the electrical connector from the tank to the wiring harness ( disconnecting the pump ) attempt to start the bike for about 30 sec that "should" purge the line pressure you can them remove the hose.

and change the filter.

Thanks for all the input. I saw some pictures of the OEM filter and it is about the same size as my "see-through" filter, like Oldog said.
One last question....The wire from the pump..Where should I look for it? Will removing a fuse be easier?

There is a test port on the fuel line used to attach a pressure gauge. Remove the cap and press the center of the schrader valve (just like a tire valve) a small amount of fuel will squirt out, catch it with a rag. This is the preferred method to relieve pressure in fuel injection systems, automotive and motorcycle.

NO

The wiring harnes emerges from the tank forward of the fuel connection
there is a catch on one side to release the connector, which is 4 wires in a square about 1/2" on a side. }

If you opt for the factory method.

I would not turn on the ignition and hence pressureize the fuel line if you intend to bleed the pressure off at the schrader valve port

Either will work.
