I have a s3 with less than 1k miles I fired it up the other day to go for a short ride and noticed the Speedometer was not working the back lite works and the digital odometer displays current mileage but does not advance or show current speed.
Anyone had this problem?

Also on the top of motor block there is a what I believe to be a crankcase vent with a black hose about 3/8 of an inch attached where does the other end go. Mine currently is not connected to anything should this return to the air cleaner or just vent.

Any help would be appreciated

The speedo sensor failure is a pretty common problem. If you do a search on the board you'll find more than you'll want to know about the cause and the solution. I've never had the problem with mine, so I really can't offer much more than that.

The tube is a transmission vent and is fine where it's at.

The solution is to buy a new one. The new ones have an internal 5v regulator and are (I believe) around $75. The original sensor ran on unregulated 12v and were prone to failure.

The new sensor is for 2003 XB9 and 2002 and earlier tube frame models. In 2004 (possibly mid 2003, I don't remember) an ECM update changed the voltage supplied to the sensor from 12v to 5v. 9's and tubers need the updated sensor.

The speed sensor's tend to fail. It's pretty easy to replace, hardest part is unplugging the cable. You'll find it on the engine block near the battery. It's held in place with one alan head screw. The part is not Buell specific, any recent HD speed sensor will work -- the differences in part numbers are cable length. If you don't find the Buell part, take your sensor to a HD dealer and have then sort through their parts for one with a similar length cable.
I replaced mine at Sturgis last summer with a Dyna part--cable is longer that I needed and cost me $54.

On an S3, I think the "real" updated part also has an updated wiring diagram and harness parts so it is now powered off the 5v regulated ECM input.

If you don't want to mess with that, and just scare up a new sensor somewhere, you probably want to put a regulator in line with the existing 12V rail to keep from just baking the new one as well. Once these tubers have their first kill, they get an appetite ; )

If you go that route, shoot me an email with a shipping address (click my profile and send a PM) and I will send you a 5v filter you can wire inline. I won't be able to get to it for a week or so, JB2 has lured me on another adventure that will tie me up for a bit over the holiday ; )
