I'm sure by now a lot of us have turned to our bikes as our main mode of transportation. While I normally ride a lot, I find myself wanting to use my bike to relieve my truck from runs to the grocery store. I bought soft bags for my X1, but I'm having issues with the bags rubbing against the rear tire, moving around and being easily stolen. I'm thinking of some sort of metal U shaped bar that I can mount on the underside of the tail section to strap the bags down to. It's been a while, but I seem to remember that my Father's bike had something like that to keep his bags out of harms way. Anyone know what they are called or someone who sells something I could use/modify? I have more than enough tools to make something. I turn to the hive mind for better ideas or suggestions. My soft bags have straps that I attach to the passenger brackets on both sides to keep them off of the tire with no problems. Then also mount under the seat to prevent (easy) theft. | ||

The Buell soft bags for the tubers had a plastic liner that ran from the front, down and across the bottom, and then up the back. That helped them keep their shape and not sag or flap around. They they also had a bracket up under the seat pan that they hooked to at the top and then an adjustable straps at the bottom that went through the rear foot peg mountings to hold the bags down. The U-shaped metal bag supports like are used on the H-D cruisers and baggers mount to the two bolts that hold the rear fender to the support arms. I don't think you have similar attaching points on the X1 but maybe you can work something up. Jack | ||

here is my latest brainchild. x1 seat, hacked rear foam section, tuck cover under drivers seat, leaving the rear section just the plastic base. use falt bar or a rack from a different motorcycle and bolt it to the plastic pan, make the metal stick out past the bike on both sides, maybe even throw in a short sissy bar off the back to strap a top bag to, then hang the saddle bags off the flat bar bar underneath. i already have an extra seat now i just need to start cutting!!!! im planning on fittings the biggest bag i can on the back with small saddle bags so i can haul clothes and all my fishing gear to get to the far away streams for cheap! | ||

I, too, have an old seat to hack up. That sounds like a really interesting idea. I had all my fishing/camping gear strapped to my bike last year. It was a real mess trying to balance everything from saddle bag to saddle bag. One bag had my tackle box, while the other had a lantern. A flat top on the back would have been extra handy. Sounds like it's time to crack open a beer, sit in the garage and start trying a whole bunch of ideas. Thanks, Phat | ||

that was me jack, i made a few of them and sold one to "fasted" who later on found out that he couldn't use because of the ventura rack i think. he still has it and out side of the mounting holes being off and over all of 1/8th of an inch, it was made out of stainless steel. | ||

you are right ... the under seat bracket for Buell saddlebags will not work with the Ventura setup ... but the straps to the peg mounts do a good job holding it in place... I actually might be selling a complete Buell saddlebag/tail setup for an S1 and one for an M2 ... not really sure but if anyone is interested and has an enticing enough offer ... let me know | ||

Somebody enticed me when they said they had lost a set of M2 bags on eBay for around $175. I had a set that I had paid about $150 for and sold mine for that. I was glad to get the money back and also to see them get a good home on another tuber. Jack | ||

1) How to take it with you...Here's what I have on my '99 S3T. Made it with a band saw, drill press, & TIG welder. A removable rack using the same bolts which retain the tail section. The 1/2" tubing was rolled into several large radii - generally following the curve of the tail section. This provides an outboard support for in my case a Harley sissy bar bag laid down, and held in place with bungees. The removable back rest rail is also a stop for the bag to rest against. This rack was tried out for 1,100 mi. this spring and it works. I install it only for long trips. Same for the wide bag lids. 2) Saddle bag stabilizers - added front & rear. Really controls the vibes. There are some clever brackets in front to the frame, and 2 large holes in the tail section for the rubber isolators (Grainger) to pass thru. The rear bracket is almost all new, and boxed. 3) Windshield is a Zero Gravity plus a Laminar Lip on top! An extra pair of mounting holes and well nuts in the fairing keep the Lip in the position I need to have 5/8" gap in the front. This works well also. If anyone has questions, ask them soon, as I am riding from Cleveland, OH to Eugene OR. next week. I'll be gone ~ 5 weeks - w/o computer access.
