I went flogging my M2 in Jersey (weather finally broke) and I ran her up to 128 MPH! Smooth as glass but it was revving around 5800RPMs. I know everyone has different opinions but how high of rpm can you cruise at without vibrating or blowing the engine apart? I was thinking around 3800 to 4000 max on a long cruise. I have owned harleys my whole life but this is my first Buell. THANKS

good question. I was wondering the same thing myself...

topic aside, I installed the factory race kit on my M2 last month but didnt really get to use it @ March Badness. Since my return home, Ive sought out every "twisty" road on the NW Florida map and hit a few familiar spots. I passed a truck on my favorite straight and about sh*t when I looked down at the speedo. 105 mph with PLENTY of pull to go. I may have been in 3rd, but possibly 4th - cant exactly recall - I was blinded by the "oomph" she had.

Im impressed to say the very least.

When "touring" on my M2 I consistantly ride in 4th gear at 4,000 rpm. I have a 26 tooth front sprocket and still rarely use 5th gear unless I am riding over 80 mph.

Not many twisties out here in Nevada so when I got my chance last year I saw +- 150 for a burst tickling the rev limiter. It's hard to tell when things are going by that fast and you have to keep your eyes on the road!

On my 2000 S3 150 mph would translate to 7500 RPM -- Bneck

Anony,
Unless you have changed your gearing (front pully) a stock M2 will top out at about 135 (134.5 to be exact), after that you are in the rev limiter.
This was measured on a well known dyno before I did my passes for the 130 Club at Bonneville.
The difference you saw on your bike are most likely due to an "optomistic" speedometer.

Due to wheel slip on the salt, it was everything I could do to crack 130 twice to make the "Club".

However, there are a number of M2's out there that will top out at over 150 and run on pump gas. They are anything but stock..... (120+ HP at the rear wheel)
Every pony is needed to get them to that speed.

hey bluz, i've heard from other people that it's alot harder to go faster at the salt flats than say in florida. that's just what i've heard. and although there is engine work done on my m2, it was everything i can do to get the 137 in florida.

What effect do you suppose rider weight has on these speeds? I don't know where much more weight could be taken off the bike. It's easier for me to lose weight than buy carbon fiber parts. Or Unobtainium wheels. I have always got along on a low budget. TT I weigh 168lbs. and I work at it

Rider weight affects acceleration but has little, if any effect on terminal speed.

Reducing wind resistance will have more effect on top speed than reducing weight.

Reduce frontal area (ie shorten suspension, take off the mirrors, tuck in, and get "slippery") if you want to go fast.

What Dave said, the difference between 128 ands 130.xx was a matter of pulling in the left elbow about 1 1/2". You could actually hear the RPM change.
Neil, the wheel slip on the salt is really amazing. I didn't feel it but it was there.
The real go fast guys (Aaron, Fireman Jim, etc.) say it gets REAL interesting above 175 MPH.

At 128 I had a little more that I could feel it pull when I gave it full twist but I was heading into the red (rpm). I bet with some euro gears I can see 140mph. My M2 has the S2 fairing that I can get under at high speeds and it is very comfortable under their

I guess know one has jiggled their buell apart with high RPM cruising (base, head, case, ect...)gaskets all hold up to the sustained RPMs? I have had a 1980 1000cc sportster shake itself apart! Even the bolts on the cylinder bases come lose and pushed the cylinder up & down with oil leaking everywhere! (YES THEY WHERE LOCTITE AND TORQUED!)

I have about about 14,000 on my bike... I think. I am on my third speedo.

1 dead due to speed sensor failure
1 dead to 85 mph oops at the track

I do run the Synthetic Harley oil but other then that I have made no internal changes to the engine. It burns no oil and runs good.

I have recently aquired a 2000 X1 with 9500 miles on it.....It had many quirks as mentioned in lots of posts here....

I happen to work at a drag strip and was anxious to baseline it.....10 passes i na row and a very consistant 13.45 at 100 mph...Man was I disappointed..I put a guy 100lbs lighter than me on it and after 20 passes he gets it down to 12.19 at 105mph..

But it still had the backfiring and stumple and man o man was it ever fat(rich)....

After that it was winter and time for the Buelly to sleep...So I take it out 3 weeks ago and chat with some scooter guys at the track when one guy notices I have a crack around the O2 sensor bung 3/4 of the way around....Holy Sh*t ..so off comes the exhaust and over to the welder she goes....

Back at the track the next weekend and it goes 12.92 at 108....Way 'mo betta....

I change that old black plugs add 2 gallons of Torco 100 octane no lead..and wa laa....12.75 at 110mph all night long....

So yesterday on the way home I say lets go for a good ride through the canyon....

I open 'er up on a short 3/4 miles stretch...ding ding ding...135 and almost to red line...oh what fun it is to ride

I love my 'tuber

relatively stock...Race Ecu Vance and Hines pipe and a Forcewinder....The 'tuber has another second in it I believe....

The launch is very soft...like a stop light leave... 60' times are in the 2.0 second range....If I get aggressive with the leave she hikes the wheel way high and then I have to lift.....

Next investment will be a strut and wheelie bar..That should allow me to leave as hard as the tire can take ...and cut a light too

Anyone else have any dragstrip times or stories to tell???

I just went to the AHDRA races in Reynolds, Georgia and was surprised to see so many tube frame Buells out there. An X1 was knocking them down in the 11.50 index class. It had a stock length swingarm and wheelie bars (I think the guy won the class). There was another Buell, an M2 that was running in the 10.90 index class. It had an extended steel arm and wheelie bars. All the bikes and riders where incredibly consistent and the competition was very close. There was some real racing talent there.

If you've never been to the all Harley drags, you need to see it. I'm a fan now. Incredible stuff and the Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds was a great venue to see it in. Very grass-roots, but nicely laid out and maintained. I was able to spectate all day only 30 feet from the bleach box and starting line ... it was awesome.

As mentioned in my earlier post,I work at a dragstrip......THE STRIP at Las Vegas Motorspeedway..The AHDRA World Finals are held here every year....It is amazing how many Buell's are in competition......

This fall I will be one of them......

My blu buell, If it was me, I would try a longer swing arm before I would go to a wheelie bar.IMHO You are a lucky man!!! Didn't they hold a Pinks show their?

Hugie..We did have PINKS there......
It was different in terms of a race
It was a TV show with racing.....It was a very long day.But the result was a good show and happy racers...It was Pinks All Out....The winner got like $16,000

I was involved in the making of a Pontiac commercial at the track a few years back with Warren Johnson Jim Yates Mark Pawruk and George Marnell...It took us 10 hours to film .....for a 60 second commercial

Next week at the track I'm going to push the launch a little and see what happens now that I have a good baseline.

I'll post what happens
