Well, at least it beats the chopper craze. But a wrecked buell mechanicals/electricals might make this former AMF era classic more fun and reliable. I was shocked to see the old XLCR's rapidly rising in price in collector circles. No affiliation, BTW http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-Harley-Sportster-Conversion-XLCR-CAFE-Racer-Chassi_W0QQitemZ150221132959QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item150221132959

Neat bike, but that one is a beater, judging by the wavy fuel tank and lack of motorvation. If the oil tank doesn't leak, it's the most valuable part of that bike. |

It's not even real. It's a 1979 XLH rolling chassis with 1977 XLCR stuff hanging onto it. 1979 XLH used the same frames as the previous years' cafe racer since they didn't sell well. I have a 1979 XLH and have been toying with converting it over to an XLCR. If you were to buy this thing from the guy, install a 1977-1979 engine, you would end up with a $3500 bike. The numbers wouldn't match and no one would pay extra for it. |

I was thinking XB forks, brakes and wheels and a tuber engine. You would still only have a $3500 bike, but it would be a fun one! Probably a good thing that I don't have the funds.... |

It would be a conversation piece but there is not one part in the picture, frame, seat, fork, wheels, etc. that is as good as the Buell part. So, you would have a bike that is less capable than a Buell in every way but it would have great "bar-room BS value". Sounds like a definition of "chopper". Just my opinion. Dave |

I wouldn't sell my Buell for it, but sure a cool looking fun to ride to the beach kinda bike would be a nice addition to my garage. If I want several motorcycles do they all have to be the same? Some will tell you the XB or 1125r is better in every way than my tuber - does that mean I should get rid of it? I do not understand the ilk that believe that a performance motorcycle is the only kind worth riding especially if they are not already riding the highest performance bike available?? If I won the lottery I'd have a custom bobber, and exotic - probably the Bimota 3D, several early and new Buells and probably a Ducati and/or other Euro exotica, a 'Busa, a dirt bike and a quad. What would you have a garage full of brand new Buells in different colors? Just my opinion Scott (Message edited by scott_in_nh on March 07, 2008) |

Scott, I 100% agree. The Hayabusa, Ducati (maybe a 1098), and a dirtbike indeed! Moto-diversity is a great thing. That is why I kept my 1200 Bandit and my old Triumphs when I got into Buells. I guess I am just not an XLCR fan. However. a 1983 or 1984 XR1000 would be another story. If you decide to go ahead, post photos. Good luck, Dave |

hey Dave, nah, like I said - no funds or at least the funds I have I'd rather spend on my S3. It's cool if you don't like the XLCR. For me I remember thinking when they came out "now there is a Harley I could/would ride"..... if I had the funds I would like to build some type of bobber or cafe racer so I agreed with the intent of the post that it would make a good "mutant" project. Don't worry - even if I had the money I wouldn't dismantle a perfectly good Buell. From what I read here, plenty of them go down every year, some of them for good - so parts are available! If I did build something it would be cheap, simple and fun, maybe even a thumper... |

I looked at couple XLCRs before I bought my M2, I just love their look. But just can't see one as an 'only bike', my limit right now. When/If I get a big garage it's very near the top of my expansion list. The only advantage of a 4-speed no-brake shakers like this would be one needn't be concerned with 'originality' in order to maintain collectibility. You could go ahead and upgrade stuff (i.e. "money pit") On the other hand I guess I sort of already have one of those... |

Does anyone know of any XLCR cafe racers currently for sale? Any condition or just parts. Wish I would have seen this when it was posted. Could have used a lot of the parts to put my cafe racer back to original condition. Does anyone know how much this roller sold for on E-bay? I know it is a very old listing but I was curious. Thank you Otis |
