I ordered front and rear Iso's from the local HD.
Upon further inspection, I realized that the trusty parts guy sold me the wrong front. Al from American Sport Bike got me squared away.

The dealership I go to are good guys, just seems like the parts guys are not quite up to the mysterious "tube frame species" of motorbike.

Who speaks Buell best in the Carolinas?

The confusion comes from the way the parts were related to big twin isolators.
For a long time, the same part did both but a few years ago, they diverged so that the big twin's part has a smaller hole while the buelly one is the same.
One other thing to check is the manufacturer of the part.
It should say BARRY on it.
They are made here in Massachusetts.
They should feel soft to the touch.

"...just seems like the parts guys are not quite up to the mysterious "tube frame species" of motorbike."

It's just looking up parts in the parts book, no magic involved. There are even pictures to help wade through the part numbers.

You'd think it would be a shoo-in that you'd get the right parts most of time... but it never is. That's why Daves and now Andy are so highly thought of on this forum. Never had one problem ever getting parts from these guys and they've never seen my face and I've never set foot in Appleton.

You would not believe the problems I've had getting parts from dealerships... and the sad part is, most of the parts I'm talking about are Harley parts, not Buell specific parts. I don't have a Buell dealer in my area so I always have to order everything I need. My local Harley dealer doesn't stock simple parts like 10R12 spark plugs but they have 25 different T-shirts for sale. If I order parts from dealers in another city, there is no telling where they will send them (believe me).

That ain't no way to run a business.

Crossroads HD / Buell in Wilkesboro is good. They have great staff but they aren't very convenient for me. I usually end up at HD / Buell of Greensboro if I have to have a Buell specific part. If it's a HD part, I go to Curly's HD in Winston-Salem.

I always take part numbers with me so there is no confusion or waiting for the "Buell Guy" to come to the parts counter.

buy a parts book for your year and model. dealer or flea bay, get one.....

look up your own parts numbers before going to the dealer. give the guys the page number, description of the part, the parts number, and the identifying number assigned to the picture of the part. even if they know buell stuff, they will appreciate your homework. this cuts down on mistakes and misunderstandings.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MANY PARTS NUMBERS HAVE BEEN SUPERSEDED AND CHANGED. ALSO MANY PARTS HAVE BEEN "OBSOLETED". THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE UNDER NEW PARTS NUMBERS. THE GUY NEEDS TO GO TO THE NEW NUMBER TO GET IT TO YOU.

if you want to buy stuff on this forum or others, parts numbers are priceless.

the parts book is also handy when you work on the bike. before, during, and after. buy one soon.

I remember once waiting at a parts counter with a broken clutch cable in my hand... after 5 minutes, the guy came back with the part number for the clutch cable and gave it to me. I was wondering what the deal was when he said they didn't have it, but here's the part number.

"Uh... thanks, but the part number is actually printed on the sheath here."

Then he just stared at me... breathing through his mouth.

Nah, I got a parts book.
The problem is that the Buell stuff is a bit different for the "boutique" type dealerships. Besides, this is nothing new. I ran flatheads and the shovelhead types never knew nothing about them.

The part was changed and the number stayed the same, nobody knew. The correct part was re-numbered and nobody knew.

Nobody at fault, just priorities.

The best parts person I've found in the Carolinas is Doug at High Point Harley/Buell, High Point, NC. It's not the dealer, it's the guy behind the counter that matters. No, HPHD doesn't stock much, but can pull from three dealerships all under the same owner.
Have patience, almost all part numbers for tubers have been superseeded with new numbers, and it takes some time to do all the work.
Doug is the man!

I recently wrote of my experiences on this isolator issue and ran into similar issues (see KV). The issue is the HD numbering system -- the basis has been that every progressive and improved design gets a new alpha at the end of its PN. So with the thousands of part numbers that a parts person deals with, I'm willing to let a few ignorant steps take place -- and if you play the odds, they are probably 99% correct with 99% of their customers.

However... if you look up in J&P or Dennis Kirk, there is the -B isolator that should fit if you can't get the Buell PN.

Yep, and the J&P part is half the cost of the factory part. I've had one on my S3 for a couple of years now.

Went to HD 2day to do the swap.
Lotsa effort put forth by the parts guy, hope it works this go-round.

Went to Kirk and J&P to look around just in case.

Found some Big Twin Iso's that are supposed to fit?

jesus christ....... I love you guys.
Sometimes I feel I would pay double to have buell be independent.

Unless your HD dealer is ALSO a Buell dealer, you will most likely NOT be able to get the correct Buell Part!

The HD part number that will fit for your Buell is 16207-79B, but HD no longer carries this part number -- they now carry 16207-79C, which is an upgrade for HD bikes, NOT Buells. It is NOT interchangable with the Buell -- which is where the confusion comes from. Buell has their own Part Number which is the same as the -79B, but it has to be ordered as a Buell part number. And unless your HD dealer is also a Buell dealer, they won't be able to get it from Buell. Hence, they can't get it for you.

So unless you can specifically order the -79B variant (like Dennis Kirk and J&P carry), then forget going to your local HD shop.

HD finally came through with the correct part.
Compared to rear isolators, the front was a breeze to install.

The old one looked ok, but I figure that 9 year old rubber parts should be replaced.
