The ugliest victory by the bean counters during the tube frame era has to be the sportster rear pulley. It almost completely blocks the view of the PM wheel and it's style does not compliment he bike at all.
If you've changed or modified yours - let's see it!
I've searched around the web and it looks like once upon a time PM and other made custom pulleys (expensive!). One of them even looked just like our PM wheels, but the link has since died and I have never seen any of these appear here or on ebay.
What else fits? Which XB pulleys? What EXACTLY would have to be done to a late model sportster pulley to make it fit?

PS let us know what it is, where it came from and what it took to make it work (as appropriate).
Thanks
Nice Nitsebes! Sooooo????

You can mill any "ugliest victory"sportster rear or front pulley to a nice piece of technical art.

nice devil! I had seen some that were cut out before, but not to that extent (and I always wondered how much you could cut before it becomes dangerous). I guess that the other photo is the same modification, I never would have guessed!
Thanks Tripp - it is on my list of possible winter projects. No hurry though (especially if it is expensive - Christmas put the usual hurting on all things financial).

My front pulley is working for more than 40k kilometers now, same for the rear.I can say both are reliable parts.
Besides the look, this milled pulleys save weight in the drivetrain and this add power to the wheel.

1

After and before. After milling it has been zinc coated. It is 140gramms lighter than stock

2

The way the front pulley actually looks today,I painted it black and added the Jims Meganut.

That's pretty sweet, Ralph. Did you mill the pulleys yourself?

Daniel, the rear pulley has been done by X-Race and the front by Luckyhands.
Now that I have plans to get me my own vertical milling machine next spring,I will try to mill them myself when it comes to change the pulleys(how long did they last anyway?).

I assume this version could be done by a drill press.

thanks, you have given me a few ideas for my 99 m2,mines a uk model with 29 front and 55 rear, but hope this wont be any of a problem,if i remove the front pulley do i need to replace an oil seal?also can i just pillar drill it in the same pattern and would it be possible to grind away some of the alloy from the rear pulley to get the same results,i like to do my own work as much as possible ?

No need to change any seal when the front pulley was removed. But you have to regard that this is a left hand thread secured by Locktite red. So you have to
heat the nut first and than you will need a good wrench and a good friend to secure the bike,to add same weight to the rear tire and to lock the rear brake.otherwise you will find it almost impossible to unlock that nut.Avoid to use an impact wrench! The main drive bearing will love you for that.

For the assembling you are to use a torque wrench which has to be in the 270Nm range(and of course the same good friend).
To strengthen the sometimes overstrained internal toothing of the front pulley, respectively to avoid any movement on the shaft,I smear a fair amount of Locktite Blue on to the shaft´s splines.
Locktite red is used on the thread only.Don´t use Red on the splines!
Btw. Mine came with the 29/55 ratio as well(which is caused by the stupid noise emission law in the EU),but I changed to 27/61 ratio which is way more fun: )

This thread has given me a few ideas also, thanks for posting one and all. Love the way the front looks, have left mine covered because its so damn ugly. Rear would be an asset to those shiny PM's on my X1.

hi xldevil,i like what you have done to your m2,most of which i would like to do to mine, checking out your profile you say that the bike is about 20kg lighter than stock,i have so far removed 8.6kg but added 3.5kg so its only 5.1kg lighter, what major things have you done to make your m2 so much lighter ?

Hi Stephen.
I changed to lighter parts/materials wherever I could or lightend/cutted/milled the stock parts as much as possible or I removed them at all.
The struggle to get me a light version Cyclone still goes on.
Maybe i´t is not exactly 20 kilos that I saved,I don´t know.But I´m pretty sure every gram counts : )

not the best shot but shows how i cut my stock one and lightened the front stock pulley as well.. i wanted the rear pulley spokes to be at a similar angle to the three spokes on the rear rim.. like the pulley and rim belonged together.. also removed a little material around the edge of the inside of the pulley to give it a step like on my rims.. cleaned and polished the edge of my black rims..

Did you literally cut it (if so - with what?) or did you have it milled?
If you get a chance to take/post a better picture I would appreciate it. I'd like a better idea how the angled "spokes" look....

Don´t go to far.Maybe an angeled spoke pattern is prone to break.

I was wondering how far you could go, obviously 4 spokes is to far!
From what I can see xld,it looks like the angled spokes are the same in number and thickness as the straight spokes, just cut at a bit of an angle.

Not sure that one would have broke if the "feathered" milling wasnt done. Look at the breaks and they appear to have started at the edge of the feathering. It looked trick though thats fo sho!

xldevil very pretty but not enough meat,, looks like you cut it out of a stock cast pulley.. most detailed pulleys like that are cut from billet not cast like a stock pulley.. billet is much stronger material,, still very pretty. i would have thought the spokes would have sheared at angles, being as it was stronger on one side than the other.. but looks like too much torque just snaped them clean.. hard to tell from only one pick.. bet that has a fun story to go with it!!! if you like that style what about buying a custom sporty rear pulley to your liking and boring the center out of her?

torquemonster,, many thanks

scott in nh,, it was done on a mill.. i do all my own work.. search aaomy or aaomy's and you should find some of my other projects.. hope this picture is more to your liking..
she has held up threw all my abuse.. not a stock motor either.. nothing crazy,, but not stock..
