Bought a '99 X1 with 12k miles for $3400. Already has PM wheels, forcewinder intake, after market exhaust, new rear tire. Do you think I got a good deal?

I pick it up Saturday from the dealer. Anything I should look out for? Recall stuff, or stuff that typically goes wrong on these?

Congratulations - great deal! There are a few recall items that the dealer should check for you before delivery. The list is in the Knowledge Vault:

As for what typically goes wrong, the list would include rocker box gaskets, speedo sensor, probably a few other things that you don't have to worry about until they happen.

Congrats on the "new" bike. Tubers Rock! I'd say that if the PO did the intake and exhaust he/she probably took care of the recalls as well. Does it have the race ECM?

I think $3400 is a steal! I've got a friend here in the Bay area that just bought an 01 X1 from Santa Cruz HD for $2,995 (that was highway robbery!)

Not sure if it has the race ECM. Asked the dealer, he did not know, but said he rode and he said it was fine. I'm guessing it would run like sh!t w/o the race ECU. How can I tell?

I guess it's under the seat on an X1. Printed on the top of it will be "Race Use Only."

I think it would run OK with the stock ECM, but will be a wee bit stronger with the race version.

Change the bearings in the wheels when they come off for a tire or something. Stock PMS have bearings from TURKEY in them

You need to install the NSK bearings from JAPAN. read this

Also change the oil pump drive gear as soon as possible. These have been thought to be a weak spot on the 1999 bikes.

Check the tire air pressure, check the belt tension, check the oil. Check for loose bolts/nuts everywhere.

Then just RIDE !

The rest will some later, don't worry, plenty of time for that other stuff...

Primary chain tensioner. These things go bad and I believe the first year for the new style is 2000

SWEET DEAL, i bought my 2000 limited red strip w/4k on her for 4500, pm's, with race ecm, force pipe, carbon air filter. i thought i did good but ya got me.

they are super sick bikes, you will enjoy turning heads

One more thought... on my 2000 M2, I find that the top nut on the header flanges loosens some about every other decent length ride. I keep a small torque wrench/socket laying next to the bike and check those about once a week. The bottom nuts have never moved, but the top ones are almost always a quarter turn or so from spec. Some here with more experience might know why or have a way to cure it, but for now I just check them every now and then.

Well, got the bike home. Vibrates a lot. Has a cracked header. Need to remount the exhaust. Runs rough. Think I need to ride it a little to figure out what is normal and what isn't.

When I first got my M2 my eyeballs would shake at a traffic light so much it looked like a movie-version of an earthquake.

After adjusting the idle air mixture screw, and turning the idle speed down to about 900 rpm, it's a little better.

Or maybe I just got used to it...

My Cyclone vibrates less at idle than any of my American bikes has. It gives a buzz through the pegs at most RPMs but not bad at all. After my hideous Road King, the M2 feels like a Cadillac Northstar.

I hope you enjoy your bike as much as I am enjoying mine. I just went for a ride on my lunch hour and I am still amazed at how fast the thing reaches the 100MPH mark.

Have fun and good luck. At a little less than 1,000 miles on mine and I like the bike more every time I take it out.

Check for shock recall. Upgrade front exhaust hanger. Change chain tensioner. Change bearings at next tire change. I would definitely change the fluids/plugs/wires. Check brake pads. Make sure belt is in good shape and run it loose. I w/ also get race ECM, to compliment your mods. Wouldn't hurt to run an injector cleaner ( Techron ). Have dealer check steering head bearing. Sounds like a lot, it's really not and will make your riding safer and more enjoyable.

Have your dealer run the VIN for shock. You s/ have the short one. Check KV for a pic of the new hanger, it's shaped like a "Y". If you can't find it there go to the X1 Files or American Sport Bike for a pic. It also wouldn't hurt to change fuel filter, i think the '99s came w/ plastic ones.
