Well, this is really a uselss post, as, I know the problem, and have the plugs etc..

BUT..

with the "stock" plugs NGK DPR8EA9, as soon as the bike got warm, and sat at a light for a few seconds....

pre-ignition...

and, its been getting worse as the temps got higher...

Well, with my current set of... circumstances, I dont get but an hour, maybe 2 a week to ride...

SO, snagged a set of 9EA9s, next range cooler(shoudl drop cylinder temps 200*)...

Anyway, also replacing the fuel pump today..

Seems to be weak.. doesnt sound healthy... may not be putting enough pressure, which could also cuase it to run a little lean..

If these to things dont solve my lean/detonation issues... I am going to have to find a trailer, and drive 4 freaking hours and spend 800 bucks to have it tunned...

Not really an option...

And the freaking gas around here sucks...

Just venting...

A bad fuel pump will not cause detonation at idle, if you where getting so little fuel as to detonate at idle, then the bike wouldn't run off idle.

If I had detonation at idle... there would a problem...

No, after idling for a period of a couple minutes..... trying accelerate.... PING PING PING PING....

Now, tested the pump today.. static test..18lbs..shouldnt have been running...

Swapped my plugs, and the pump... ran better, but, again, sitting there idling.. PING on accel again, though not nearly as bad... it would actually ping a few times, and accelerate..(i am pretty sure I let it idle too long there, in fact positive)..

The old plugs werent white... a tad on the lighter side of stoich... but, looked good.. front cylinder of course looked best...

SO, I am going to snag some octane boost, and see if that helps...

There isnt really a GOOD gas station here in this area... they are all "Stripes"

I want a damn Mobil or Shell

I am also gonna pop the timing cover off, and see where that is sitting... last time I was in there, I might have advanced the CPS(though, I doubt it)...

SO, I will play with it some more when I have the time....

maybe hook this PC3 up finally, get a WBO2, and try to richen her up....

I hate Corpus Christi..

Anyway...

Later, I am gonna take it out, gas it up across town, and see how it does without sitting at all the lights...

For some reason I read IDLE into your post.

Where did you get the new pump, and how much?

Mine is making a nasty noise that sounds like an under lubricated bearing

Chase, dont get down brother. It can only get better. Try to step back, catch a breath and get back into it. You've been very helpful so I know you'll get it. Wish I were closer to add support. Best wishes.....Mattu

Retard timing a bit.

That is the next step... when I get a chance..

I got to thinking... this last tank of fuel has been... kinda rough..

Then, Tiff asked me where I bought it.. and I dont remember..

SO, maybe a bad batch?

BUT, like I said, I need to pull that timing timing cover...

What do you think Jim... low RPM det, on accel(more the light throttle), when HOT.. 2-3 degrees, and go from there?

I am thinking I am not liking the DDFI anymore. The ability to solve these minor tuning issues, or INABILITY(without access to a dyno) I should say, is driving me nuts..

Chase, I have the 1250 out of my Bonneville bike in my S-2 now and have had to back timing off--twice,change to colder plugs(Champion makes some real cold racing ones) and change slow jet twice so far chasing a low throttle ping. Almost gone now,but want to get it on the new dyno and maybe change needle position.

I really don't think you can retard the timing on a fuel injected Buell. The CPS tells the computer where the crank is and the computer figures out when to spark and squirt fuel. A regular techie type mechanic should chime in about this, I could be wrong. My X1 pings on hot days so I rev the engine a bit and slip the clutch. Maybe it needs a cooling fan.

Beatx1 is pretty much right here.
The "points" sensor does the fuel squirt as well as the ignition.
Have a timing light?

Of course you can retard the timing. If the factory sets it, it can be + or - by x amount from dead-nuts at the get-go.

They've been successful retarding timing on the Uly board. Here's an example.

When these guys say they use a light to set their timing are they using a strobe style light looking in the timing hole while the engine is running? They only time I messed with my timing was when my CPS was going bad. Sometimes the bike would run so crappy I thought the brakes where dragging or it would fart and backfire on startup. I set it right to specs using a voltmeter like in the service manual. It only will ping in very hot 90+ degree stop and go traffic. Next time I'm feeling up to it I'll try retarding the timing and getting a TPS reset, hopefully it doesn't lose power like some of the guys writing in the other forums experienced.

Sorry, you gotta love the New England weather. It's a very wet humid heat. I work at an airport right in the middle of a large city, it's usually 5-10 degrees hotter here than at home in the woods. Right now, 11:00, it's 60 degrees--winters coming! By the way I'm using iridium plugs. They seem to run better but don't idle as smooth as stock HD plugs did. I did put a fuel pressure gauge on my bike last year to troublshoot a hard start condition. After fixing the leaking injector I had 45-48 psi. I'm going by memory so this number might be off.

Shell's are on the Island, in the Bluff and there are a few on S. Staples and Saratoga.

There's also two Exxon's on SPID and the one I use, James Mathis Exxon, at Alameda and Airline.

There is good gas here is town, it's just that the cheap stuff is more prevalent.

As for the heat, well, at least you can ride year-round here. I would think that counts for something.

Sorry for your troubles, brother.

Maybe I shouldn't bring up the fan thing again -- but mine no longer has the problem and the pegasus looks great --

Oil cooler. Can be installed in less than 1hr.

A 15oz bottle of lucas offroad octane booster will treat 5 tanks of gas. And raise octane by 1-2 full points.
