I tried to do a search but wasnt able to find exactally what i was after, i want to give my bike more accelleration. it seams like a front pulley swap is what i should do , is there any side effects of this, did the X1 come with lower gearing than my M2? If so i can just go to the dealer and order it correct? How much higher will it rev at say 80 mph?

The Euro pulley's setup will give more top speed.
Front: 29

BUELLers:

What is a transmiision for except to get your gearing lower ...

Look at this in another way ...

Put a XB12 motor(engine) sprocket(38T) and priimary chain ...

The TUBE FRAME BUELLS have a 34T ...

Say you have this low gearing and "i" have
38T XB12 motor sorocket and a 29T counter shaft sprocket ...

You have a 34T motor sprocket and a 27T counter shaft sprocket ...

Both your engines are the same HP/Torque ...

Say we run a mile from a standing start ...

Who do think will get there first ???

Say we run 1/4 mile drag race ....

Who do you think will get there first ???

My bet is on the BUELL with the 38T motor sprocket and 29T counter shaft sprocket ...

Aftermarket offers 30t,28t,and 26t front sprockets,I got a 26 from Al.
S-2 stock gearing was 29/61 as well as some of the S-3's.

...and the difference in 2 front teeth is amazing. My S1W feels like it's going to rev itself apart compared to my S2. S2 is a bit laggier off the line (still not slow by any stretch)...but since I ride every day I'll trade that glady for 58mpg commuting. I've only netted about 48 from the S1W - could be because it's a more agressive bike and I ride it that way, could be the pulley...but both have Thunderstorm engines now so at least that part of the playing field is levelled.

I run the 26 tooth on my M2 and love it. Yeah, you miss a little top end, butyou won't know it unless you correct your speedo... ha ha

Seriously, the bike is much smoother in the city (25 mph) and the speedo is off by about 5 mph at 60

I did the same thing on my M2 when I converted to chain. Changed the gear ratio to the same as running the 26 tooth with a belt. Terrific improvement for all the slow speed and stop and go I run into in the city. You're right on the money about that 5 mph "Koz", but I corrected mine with the "Speedo Healer".(No Affiliation)

So I have gathered from these posts that going to a 26T will improve my 1/4 mile but cost me a few MPH's on the top end? My problem is I do a lot of stop and go and a lot of highway where I routinely run at about 80MPH.I notice that the RPM's at 80 w/ be 3800? Can I run 4K RPM's for any length of time? What RPM's do you guys normally cruise at? I try to stay around 3K.

I rarely cruise below 3500. My M2 (stock engine) loves to run around 4000. Unless I am doing 75 or more I never touch fifth gear, this includes 300 mile days.

I have also run my bike at the track, Blackhawk farms, which is a smaller track and had no problems of topping out. Other guys I know on larger tracks have had issues with hitting the rev limiter in fifth less then halfway down the straights.

For street use though, I love the 26 tooth sprocket.

I don't have any problem at all running in the 80 mph range with that gearing. But I also like to keep mine at a little higher RPM range.

Rag - how hard was the "Speedo Healer" to install? My bike originally had Euro gearing, now has US gearing so the speedo/odometer is out quite a bit!

I went to American Sport Bike and all they seem to have is a lightweight 26T sprocket. I would rather have more durable steel. Where can I get a 26T in steel? Can I get one thru HD? Thanx

Call and talk to Al as I got the other version from him that is an alum/steel mix for more longevity.
I cannot comment on the rpm range as I have the Baker 6 speed and the 26 tooth front.

Speedo Healer is just a 3 wire install if I remember correctly. The usual Positive, Ground, and a tap into the speedo sensor wire. But I'd certainly check out any other options available.

If you want to go a bit quicker put a set of 883 sportster primary gears in as they are lower geared.

Hey Firemanjim, I just got a Baker kit, haven't put it in yet. What I wanted to know is, whether to change the engine sprocket to 34, or the front pulley to 26?

If they wind up the same approximate gearing, is there any reliability or performance advantage to one or the other of these approaches? I want to slightly lower the first 2 or 3 gears for around town, while counting on that 6th to even still slightly lower rpm at 75-80.

It seems like a Baker Longlife pulley costs about the same as the BDL engine sprocket. The only advantage of either that I can perceive, is that installing the Baker 6 will take me down to the engine sprocket anyway, so while I'm there...switch it out? Any suggestions at all?

Sorry, not the BDL engine sprocket, it's made by Evolution.

Anybody have any suggestions or feedback about using an engine sprocket vs. the front pulley, to lower the gearing?

The speedo will be off in 6th anyway, so that difference is moot due to the Baker6.

If you change engine sprocket you need to change your primary chain along with it?? The upside to changing front pulley is it is much easier to swap back if you want/need to.I id the 26 on my bike because I was just hovering in the start of my sweetspot in the powerband and found myself cruising faster than I wanted. I thought the 26 would slow me down on the freeway. Of course, now it is pulling so well that I end up going fast anyway ,oh well.

The Baker has a shorter first gear. An advantage to changing the engine sprocket is not having to mess with speedometer correction. I'm running the baker 6 tranny with stock primary gearing but 27/55 secondary gearing. The 88" pulls it just fine but I find that I only use sixth when I'm on the Interstate or running 70+. With that said it will hoist the front wheel in first with just a twist of the throttle. I plan to drop to the 26 trans pulley.

Well, I don't plan to use 6th except on the Interstate or running 75+, but that describes my commute. I guess the prudent thing to do would be simply install the 6 and then try it out. All good points, thanks for taking time to respond.
