I am adding discs ( Supertrapp) to a 2K X1. It looks pretty easy and plan on doing it myself. Is there anything I should be aware of? I am going to a total of 18, if thats not loud enough I am considering 30. I have a race cap but don't like the idea of exhaust on tire. What would be louder 18 plus race cap or 30 w/ standard cap? Thanx

Put some NeverSeize or equivalent compound on your screw threads. Stainless steel screws are bad about galling and then either stripping the sockets or hexes or breaking off when you try to remove them. Also lock washers are a good idea as loctite is totally useless on exhaust system components because of the intense heat. Are you interested in noise or horsepower? They are not necessarily the same. The Nallin dyno runs show that after adding 21 discs your horsepower drops off if you add more. KK

I was at NRHS, they also provide dyno runs ( albeit on an '04 Sporty) and they went all the way to 26 discs w/ HP gains each time more discs were added. If you buy the race screws ( DS fat book) they hold a max of 34. I am going to give 18 a try and may settle for max discs w/ stock screws( 22 ). I want a deep, pretty loud tone. The HP is secondary to sound as I feel I have enough already. If I gain some - great, if not, thats fine too. Will running race cap harm my tire?

Don't you have the snorkel that directs the exhaust away from the tire?
Did they do the dynos with the race endcap on? I was wondering what effect it had on the number of disks.

I installed my Supertrapp on my 2000 S3 about a month ago -- 18 discs - forcewinder - race ecm -- I live in Colorado so I actually took it up to NRHS and he was nice enough to dyno it for me.
They are really great people and have an incredible shop.
Made 93hp at 145mph -- not bad for mile high air. It was scary though, hearing it rap up that high.
Anyway the rear mount that came with my IDS was a small black bracket with 2 giant screw adjustable hose type clamps attached. This contraption lasted about a week before the top black part cracked. I welded it and got another 750 miles out of it before it cracked again but this time both sides. I called and left a couple of messages at Supertrapp -- but they never called back -- then today a box showed up from them that contained 2 stainless round strap/brakets. but nothing else. No instructions or no explanation. Does anyone know if this is an updated rear hanger -- I guess I could just bolt one to each side of the Z bracket and call it good -- any thoughts? -- Brokeneck

sounds like the improved bracket, IIRC it goes under the clamps and attached to the Z brkt.

Thanks Old Dog-- Thats just it -- all they sent me were 2 clamps. They are just stainless strap bent round -- the diameter of the pipe -- and then each end comes up abut 2" and has a bolt hole dilled in it. I just got done hanging 'em both off the Z bracket. Looks simple and strong. We'll see.
Also picked up the updated header mount -- Wanted to put it on this weekend as well but it is a little bigger job than I bargained for -- moving the voltage regulator and all --T'm sure this has contributed to my broken stud and trashing the rear hanger. I'll get to it when I return from my Buell commute tomorrow --

Thanks -- that is a picture of the bracket that came with the bike. It first snapped off on the side shown in the picture. There is not a mot of metal there because of the slots provided for the clamps. The metal is very mild steel -- probably because of the complex bend. I welded that side but them the other side snapped and then finally my weld. These new clamps/hangers are massive. There is no bracket just two huge hangers. I'll try to post a pic after my shift today.
