Hello all, I have owned the M2 for about 2 months with no problems at all, but I am frustrated at my bike not being able to top 100mph. The only mod. to the bike is a V&H muffler and a K&N air filter in the stock air box. The bike runs great and gets good gas mileage (40ish to 50 mpg).
Where should I start?
Thanks

have you actually ran your bike next to another or just going by speedo? an m2 in less it really runs like crap should easily top 125. maybe i'm wrong, but i've been faster on my x-1

the only bike I have to ride next to is my buddies ZX-14 and I never ride "next to" him when he cracks the throttle so I guess I will have to ask him to keep with me to double check. I do know that at 70mph out speedos read the same.

what kind of revs are you pulling? If it is not close to redline - something is wrong....
At the dragstrip I cross the finish line at over 114 mph in 4th gear. While an S3 has more power and is probably faster in 5th than an M2, they should both pull redline in 4th and both have the same gearing

A stock M2 should be able to hit the rev limiter in 5th (an S3 or X1 does get there quicker). I'd check for vacuum leaks, check the plug gap, maybe clean the carb and check the CV diaphragm. Also make sure the petcock screen is clear and the tank is properly vented. The basics first.

Revs get to about 5500 and thats it. I will check with the possible problems listed above. Does any one know of a good shop for Buells in the St.Paul, MN area?
Thanks

maybe check the packing in the vance&hines can, the core may have become displaced, creating a possible restriction.

It was posted on here somewhere else... Maybe someone can repost it though:

What's the approximate speed at redline for each gear?

Scott said he was at 114 mph in 4th gear. Mine was out of steam (and sounded like out of gearing) at an indicated 105 in 4th today.

I'm a pretty big guy so I'm sure that limits my top speed. But, I can get about 125 out of 96 S1. But these bikes are not top end machines.

My M2 used to really run like crap too, and I was able to get to 125 with ease before I would start to close the throttle. I never attempted to go any faster.

Are you getting any funny/weird sounds out of when running? Any stumbling at any speeds? That bike should have no problems getting past the 100mph mark. I'm a big guy and I had no problems getting my x-1 past 100 when it was stock. As a matter of fact, I just finished doing a top end refresh (new head/base gaskets) on a friends 97 M2 that still has the stock exhaust, cams, and heads on it. The only thing it has is a round air cleaner with a K&N filter, and I re-jetted his carb to 45/190 jets, re-worked the slide and shimmed the needle. Other than that it is bone stock, and I got his speedo up to 110, so you should have no problem unless there is something wrong.

Does it have an adjustable ignition? Some people set the rev limiter to Harley-like lows.

I've done 125 two up with a calibrated bike speedo (reads around 5mph less than the stocker topped out).

today I took the bike out for a 300 mile ride during which i tested the rev limiter in different gears. I had no problem hitting the limiter in 1st - 4th gear and in 4th gear I was over 100mph. does this sound about right? I ran out of road so I didn't push 5th gear much. I also checked the muffler to make sure it was in good shape and every looked good except for no packing.

In 5th my 2000 S3 runs almost exactly 20 MPH for every 2000 RPM --

I've taken it to to 6500 RPM in fifth or 130 MPH -- basically stock -- Forcewinder -- Race ECM --Supertrapp -- I had my BIG saddle bag covers on but it still felt as though it would have pulled more--

Brad,
I was going to suggest he give you a call.

Just watch out for the loose venturi screws.

Nutz,

Are you getting into a tuck, down on the tank or sitting up in the wind? That makes a huge difference in your top speed in 5th gear.

Rev limit should kick in at around 120 mph in 4th gear if I recall correctly.

I Just hit 130mph on my 2002 M2 w/ jetted 195 main and 45 slow jet, RACE ECM, Forcewinder, and stock muffler (D&D Has to make me a new one since the Race muffler didn't fit right on my Race header, so had to go back to stock since the WileyCo muffler broke at the welds...)

I was tucked on the tank also....
