I am looking to wrap my exhaust on my 97 S3 in heat wrap and I am not sure if I should or not because I have heard good and bad things both. The worst that I have heard is that it will shorten the life of my exhaust by half and will cause the metal to crystalize? Let me know if any of you have any thoughts on this or have wrapped your exhaust? Thanks, Mike

i put the copper wrap on my 98 m2, i duno either way as to good or bad since ive had it on my bike for only a few months... one thing i figured id let you know thought is i had black hi-temp paint on the exhaust before putting on the copper wrap and its seems as though the black came through after the burn in of the exhaust.... so the exhaust is black at the higher heat areas, and copper in the lower heated areas........ ill post a pic for you if i rememebr...

I've had it on my S1W for about 1500 miles, no issues. No right-knee-flambe, either : )

Mine has been wrapped for over 5 years. Other than the wrap rotting and coming apart every 1&1/2-2 years there's no problems and the right leg feels much cooler.

If you are worried about the longevity of the pipe just ceramic coat it first .. My pipe is ceramic coated then wrapped, cools to the touch very quickly after shutting down the bike with both ...

Might want to spray the wrap with a hi-temp sealant made for it, it will last longer - just don't pressure wash it .. it eats up wrap, and the sealant as well ..

I know what you mean about the color. My S1W doesn't get ridden in rain and usually hand-washings as opposed to hoses, and the black is still coming out of the wrap. I'm thinking maybe a "touchup" of black stove paint from time to time....?

This is going to sound a little "off the wall" and is a bit of a tangent, but my M2 had a wrapped pipe when I got it. Soon afterward I started having an itchy rash on my calf. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me until one day the sun light was hitting my pant leg just right - I could see tiny stands of fiberglass embedded in the fabric. Ditched the wrap and my leg was better quickly. Don't know anything about the wrap (since it was put on by the PO), but it could possibly be an issue for others...

I suspect regular paint dries too brittle. I used this on my wrap:
