So I had what I thought was a missing bolt due to vibrations but it turns out that the bolt sheered instead

front left

I rode for about 100 miles or so without that left bolt and I guess it was about 99 miles too much since after hitting a bump this was the result

front right

So does anyone have any ideas as to what kind of damage I did by still riding with the missing bolt.

Right now it seems that the motor has rotated forward so I hope that the exhaust is not tweaked.

It was not a good Friday.

Thanks

Mike

I'd like to know why your AIT sensor is hanging out here!

Hey I had the same exact thing happen to my S3T....Luckily there was no other damage. I bought another stock bracket $35 and the special grade#9 bolts. Hardest part was drilling out the snapped off bolt in the head. I got lucky though and as I was drilling away, the bit got stuck in the bolt so a simple reverse of the drill and the broken bolt screwed right out!

Maybe one of those reverse direction drill bits would be easier.

Good luck!

"Going to church pays dividends!"

My reaction to that is the same reaction I had when I found out the name 'Daniel' means 'one who is judged by God' in ancient Hebrew.

I am so screwed.

"Lucky"?

That's way beyond "lucky", maybe bordering on "miraculous".

Next time that happens, run right out and buy a lottery ticket

I wonder if more of these failures of the mount bolts are on the newer tubers with the extra support tube in the frame? My 99 S3 has broken the same bolt but my 96 S1 has yet to break a bolt, but the S1 has a better bracket.

the 96 S1 has the triangulated front bracket, i think that is key, as none of the billet brackets that are triangulated have had breaking problems, and i've only heard of one 96 having a broken bolt, but that was before the bolt upgrade...???

Not sure if the NRHS mount will stop the bolt shearing problem, but no one that has one has come forth with the problem.

I had to add the link attached to the mount and frame; M2's didn't come stock with one in that location, but the holes are there for them (even on the stock mount). The link made no noticeable difference in the way the bike feels... at least on my bike.

The only reason I got the billet mount was because I didn't want to trim the stock one. I never had a problem with the stock one, btw. Not in 20

Thanks for all the advice, I know it was not smartest thing to keep riding with bolt snapped but didn't think to much about it. I was actaully riding home from reordering the bolt (they got the wrong one the first time I went) when it broke.

As for the air temp sensor, I didn't want to drill a hole in my air cleaner for it so I put it out there, 19K and no problems, hardly anyone ever notices it, except now the broken mount draws attention to it.

Drill a hole, you are getting a bad reading in your FI with the AIT there causing a improper fuel mix.

Just cause your butt dyno doesn't see a problem doesn't mean there isn't one developing...
