A few people have been paying attention to what I have been doing, and going through with my S1 ... both fixes and enhancements - this bike has had it's share of everything since I bought it in January .. but I can honestly say (as I knock on wood) aside from touch up paint on the frame - it's done ...

I have replaced or fixed countless things on this bike ... so much that when something has come up(read - broke)the garage words were (F@#$ it - it's the S1 .. what's next ? I feel like a Buell guru after the first 4 months of ownership of this bike while my M2 remains the role model bike ....

Anyway - on to the pictures ... hard to believe it's the same motorcycle that I bought in January ... Just for fun and since the drag strip is close by I grabbed a set of wheelie bars, and am getting a spare set of wheels with Mickey Thompson's, and for more performance on the occasional day at Road America (who am I kidding - for the street as well !!) - XB12 heads and cylinders with XB9 pistons ... I have Dyno time slotted for this coming Thursday for some tuning and some hard numbers ...I will post results when I get them ...

First 2 pics are nothing new - the before shots everyone has seen .. the rest are as it sits today .... finished the engine rebuild with help from a couple friends a couple days ago .. (thanks Jason and Steve - and thank you Steve for the nice chunk of billet holding the motor up !) The front turn signals and bar-end mirror were added yesterday ...

It was definitely the bike that did it for me -- the M2 came first though, due to 2-up seating, and you can't beat a 99 M2 with only 1758 miles on it, for only $3500 .. (that was 1 1/2 years ago) .. has nearly 8000 miles on it now, and since January I've put almost 3500 miles on the S1 ...

Here are a couple better pics .. and a couple close-ups of the new front turn signals- these things have to be the coolest - the only others I've found were the Kellermans, and I didn't like the style - they didn't belong on a tuber...

Sweet! Looking forward to the dyno numbers. What's the difference between XB9 pistons and S1 pistons?

What's the difference between XB9 pistons and S1 pistons?

Biggest difference is that XB9 pistons are domed, yielding more compression - nearly 11.5:1 as opposed to the flat 12 piston with 10:1 compression, bore is the same so it's an easy swap.

I had tossed the idea of a 1250 kit around but after talking to those in the know at Buell and at Hal's, this would be the best bang for the buck, for about the same amount of money.

But beyond the higher compression - it's the XB heads that make this worthwhile - these heads go on the Buell race bikes right out of the box - they are light years better than the stock heads. For bolt on performance you can't beat it !

Sweet ride!! The only thing better than an S1, is an S1W (but hey, I am biased because I own one)!!!

Until last week I would have agreed with you ..but after the complete top-end rebuild and taking it on that first ride after .. I'll take my S1 over an S1W all day ... (but I am also a little biased as well)

Nice job Brian!
It was great talking to you yesterday.
You're right, the blinkers are very cool!

I will pick up the sprocket cover from Mat on Friday.

Very nice S1......

Brian,

Where did you get the wheelie bars? Is that the front pulley cover from across the pond?

Wheelie bars are from Pingel .. although I bought them from a guy that works at Revolution Performance in Plymouth, WI .. at about half the cost of new (unless you count the speeding ticket I got on the way to pick them up)

And yes .. the front sprocket cover is from across the pond ... as are the turn signals and bar end mirror ... I liked the fit and finish better on these pieces than anything offered here ... even got a black front sprocket cover for the M2 ...

Great looking S1!! I originally bought my S1 back in 99 because I wanted a bike that would be a 'classic', not another sportbike that looked old as soon as the new generation came out. Sure enough, I love the looks of the S1 today as much as I did when I first saw it!

Tattood, please post your dyno numbers when you get them. I just had my 10th anniversary last week, and I get to choose my gift.... Muahahaha! My S1 has all the basics, but nothing too fancy. I am thinking about getting the best 'bang for the buck' engine work done, or possibly suspension. Do you think that your cylinder/piston setup is better than more traditional engine work like ported heads, better cams, etc...? Thanks for your input. Your bike looks sweeeeet in black!

Thanks for the words !

As far as bang for the buck .. I think this is the best .. (my opinion) Plenty more you can do, a lot more you can do ... but this is easy, no fuss, bolt on power...

Apparently you can't make these XB heads flow any better, they throw these on the Buell race bikes right out of the box they flow so well .. and the XB9 pistons in a 1203cc motor yields higher compression - I think it's 11.5:1 from 10:1 which was stock on my S1 (non-thunderstorm heads) and on my M2 (with thunderstorm heads)

This setup is still very streetable, but with plenty of extra to have decent fun on the track .... by leaving the stock lightning cams in it, I shouldn't be losing any power down low, if you go with a hotter cam, the power band will move up higher in the rpm range, making it more suited for say a track/race bike, not necessarily a street bike, the power stays in a useable palce for street riding while making enough power to be almost dangerous with it ..

This is a total bolt-on upgrade.

It makes my 99 M2 with factory race kit, feel super slow .. (The M2 isn't necessarily fast as far as top end - but plenty of grunt down low to be super fun - but can't even compare to the S1 now)

I won't say anything about what numbers I am expecting, but I was told by reliable sources it could yield up to 108rwhp all day ... I will find out what mine will do come Monday - I went to dyno tune on Thursday and had a significant intake leak, so they couldn't do it, rescheduled for Monday ... I fixed the leak tonight .. let's hope for the best !!

Look for a post on Monday night.

Thanks for the update! I'll be checking for your post on Monday night. Your setup sounds about perfect for what I'm looking for. Can you tell me where you purchased the XB heads and XB9 pistons? What was the cost compared to a 1250 kit/headwork/cams? I am slowly making my way through the Old School archives and that sounds like the other decent alternative (although I imagine it is pricey). Maybe it's because I'm partial to the S1, but I imagine your M2 may become neglected now. : )

XB heads indeed flow better than breathed on T/S heads, BUT , they certainly can be improved upon by the same methods used on other heads--porting,bigger valves, better valve job, etc. I have these heads on my S-2 in a stage III(actually a bit more as the ports were done with a turbo in mind) from NHRS.

Great looking bike! I'd be more interested in your 1/4 mile times then dyno numbers (unless you had it dynoed on the same machine with the stock set-up for comparison).
A 20+ HP boost from a compression bump and improved but un-modified heads does not sound realistic to me, but if you get it I'll happily eat those words (and know what mods I would do when the time comes).
There is a thread about a 1500cc monster with stage III heads, enlarged throttle body, high pressure fuel pump and cams making 120 RWHP. 100 RWHP, IMO, would be an aggressive and realistic target for you to shoot for!

Agreed Jim ... bigger valves and porting would obviously be better, but out of the box, stock valves- they can't be made to flow any better - and we are talking bang for the buck ... simple, relatively low cost ... I actually thought about your bike during that response ... but I still figured this setup is the best "bang for your buck" .... no added work required, bolt on and go.

I was back and forth on this setup and a big bore kit from NRHS ... and after talking to people about it (the guy's from Hal's speed shop, a driveline engineer at Buell, and Danny Bilansky) I felt this was the right move. This setup has done 105-108rwhp (with a 44mm card) Hal's speed shop has done it. That is why I went with it. Mine will obviously be less - stock carb and a Force exhaust (their setup's included a race exhaust)

Scott - I tried to get it in to the dyno before the build, but didn't get tires on the bike in time to make it (they were beyond bald after this springs Slimey Crud Run). As far as 1/4 mile times - I sadly won't be able to run it until Homecoming when Great Lakes is having Buell Bike Night ... so July 5th I will have 1/4 mile times....

In the end, this setup was best for me due to the simplicity, reliability, and street-ability

And Jim - your bike doesn't count !!!! In no way is your bike normal ... although it is still one damn impressive scoot....
