I may (pending Wife Approval) be looking at an S2T soon. It's a 95 and looks to be pretty nice. I'm just curious what the main differences are (besides the obvious) between it and my S1W. It's been years since I rode an S2. Things I (think I) know:

S1W - thunderstorm motor, S2T not. Does it make a noticable difference (i.e. should I just buy the T/S heads and pistons we have here and upgrade?)?
S1W - working sidestand, S2T not always ;)
Both - WP inverted front end; handing should be similar despite the additional weight of the T?

Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for? I love my S1W - it's the reason I'm looking at a T to replace my FLHP. Is there an online spec sheet page anywhere I could look up?

if it is a 95 then it isnt a s2t, its a s2 with t add ons..
s2t were 96 only.. they have charcoal frames and side plates.
it should have 1" lower foot peg mounts and tall bars.. there was a recall on tall bars.. some were cut and then welded to the clamps,, these are recall items .. the others were dimpled and welded to the clamps.. do a search and you should find picks..its should also have bags and lower leg fairings
rather than switching to thunderstorm heads you should switch to firestorm heads,, "XB" the bike currently should have flat top pistons that work well with the XB heads.. this will require a new front motor mount.. some people mod the old one but i would go new.. the s2 has a stock sportster motor,, lightening heads ,, heavy fly wheels and more torque derived cams.. same as the m2s ran..

S2 and S2t came stock with standard Sportster heads

Stock S2/S2t motors were stock sportster motors.65HP,prepair for upgrades.

yes ,, lightening heads are stock sportster 1200 heads,,
thunderstorm heads were some thing along the lines of 883 head castings and chambers with 1200 ports and then the combustion chamber enlarged with a tapered squish band in laymen terms.. fire storm heads are the current xb style heads and are now used on the sportys too. these have the best stock ports and a bath tub combustion chamber..
both lightening and firestorm heads use a flat top piston,,
thunderstorm require a domed piston to match the tapered squish band in the combustion chamber..

The Great Head Debate will rage on in my mind (as to "what heads for which bike?"), I'm sure. And knowing myself, if I end up with both the S1 and S2...I'm sure the S1 will end up with XB heads, and the T/S heads from the XB will end up on the S2. Or something. <sigh>

Lightning heads were an upgrade on the S-1 over the stock sportster ones on the S-2,then came the Thunderstorm ones on S-1W.
And that 65 HP was probably engine,not rear wheel on the S-2.They really need 100 RWHP.

OK, so the spec sheet that's copied above (thanks, EButch!) says the S2 has "WP Roma" forks. Difference between those and the WPs on my 98 S1W?

Gotcha. Looks like the Romas are a 'cut above' the ones on the S1...each Roma has a comp/reb adjuster, where my S1 has compression on one fork, and rebound on the other.

Ya learn something every day. Here it is 9am, and I'm already done learning! (I try to limit myself to one thing a day, LOL)

S2's had WP forks. The were rated low 70s at the crank, so figure low-mid 60s (mine peaked at 66? hp stock on the dyno).
XB heads with 536 cams and some tuning should get you into the respectable range - an S2 with anywhere from mid 90s to 100 hp at the rear wheel makes for one fun forkin' bike.
Mine has XB heads with a 15 degree squish, matching domed pistons, 1250 kit, E series cams, Supertrapp, some carb mods, and a Dyna ignition.

Well, I rode the bike today. Niiiice. All stock (was a Supertrapp stock, or did this get added to it?), nice quiet motor, no tics, no drips. No shimmy at speed (speeds unknown - speedo cable is broken just like my S1W) and I managed to find a couple spots to get up into fourth. Great handling. Corbin seat is very comfy. A little fork dive on braking and a bit of a dip during high-throttle shifts (they took longer than usual, couldn't get my size 13 under the toe peg where it was adjusted). It has THREE keys - ignition, left bag, right bag. I'll be ordering four locks for the bags in the ignition code, LOL. Only other issue was a HUGE rattle from the front rotor. I'm guessing worn floater buttons? It's a six-button and stopped well, it just clattered if there wasn't any pad pressure on it. On the upside: it has an un-mounted Signature Series timer cover, still factory wrapped; the paint is near perfect on the tank and tail with only minor blems on the fairings and bags; it comes with tank bag and saddlebag liners for the wide saddlebags. And it looks like it has the Euro rear sprocket? Or did the sprocket "look" smaller than the one on my S1W because the wheel was hidden by the bags?

Looks like I'll be bringing it home tomorrow evening ;)

Supertrapp wasn't stock but was very popular (I have one).
Make sure to get the gas tank and fork lock keys, although you'll probably never use the fork lock it faces the wrong way.
Rotor rattle is normal with the S2 - I replaced mine after it warped with 2K spec stainless, but they've gotten expensive - check with Al at American Sport Bike for alternatives if you decide to replace it.
The front sprocket on the S2 is the "Euro" spec 29T IIRC the rear is the same as other Buells.
Did it come with the fairing bags? What color, btw?

I didn't get a chance (or think) to check for the fairing bags, but I don't recall seeing them on my ride. It's Snap Red / white frame / white Marchesinis. Black/black corbin seat and a red tank bra (forget the name, but not Buell).

Gas tank key? It's not a lever-twist-type like my S1W? And the fork lock is just like my S1W...unused. LOL.

On the Supertrapp - if I want a little more growl (I can hear the rotor and the valvetrain over the exhaust; I'm used to my SS2R!) I *add* discs, right?

Thanks for the tips. We've got a couple spare wheels from the old race days, I'm sure I can find a rattle-free rotor.

I think I know which bike you bought. I was going to bid on it too when it suddenly disappeared... Anyway, good catch! Congratulations! I think the front rotor is not the original S2 rotor. It looked like a 99 version which was known to have floater issues. So either get an original S2 disc or a 00 or later tuber disc. Again, congrats to a very nice S2!

Yes, it was an ebay bike. I did go look at it in person, turns out the guy knows my dealer principal, our driver (Bemisderfer) got this guy into racing years ago...needless to say we hit it right off. Got the bike home tonight - 20 miles, 35 degrees, new bike, dark out, no speedo...still loved it.

Buelltours, there's another I was looking at - a white one in OH, SUPER low miles. Guy mentioned to me his reserve was mid-4k's. It was my backup plan, but seems to be a nice bike as well.

Now, to get a kickstand that doesn't feel like I'm about to drop the damn bike.... : )
