Can anyone educate me on how a 2001 sportster rear pulley can be machined to work on a 2001 X-1? Is the inner diameter of the pulley (near the hub) different or is the thickness of the pulley different?

Thanks,

Boiler

if you look at my profile pick you can see my cut pulley. i have two more cut ones in the basement i quickly measured for you.. the center hole is 2.464 on one and 2.462 on the other. the flange on my rear rim that it slips over is 2.446. that is a buell rear rim not the pm. dont have one of those to measure.. from where the pulley buts up against the flange on the rim to where the bolts seat against there machined areas it was .335 thick.. hope these help... aaron

Is this mod just for looks? Or is there a change in gear ratio?

I just measured the stock pulley from my 2001 X-1 and the center hole diameter is 2.447", or slightly smaller than the ones Aaomy measured for me.

Firemanjim - the change would be for looks only. Either would be a 61-tooth pulley but I would prefer something other than the black to go with the PM wheels. Some Sportsters came with the same pulley without the paint, i.e bare castings. This would be easier to polish.

Jim Mate, back in the days of the X1 I fitted American gearing to mine to take advantage of letting the engine rev more at our highway speed limit of 60 mph. I ordered a sportster rear pulley and had it machined to fit the hub of the X1 as it was a cheaper item to buy than the Buell item ,the front sproket was no problem as no machining was needed,I also fitted a device that was made by a fellow Bueller that corrected the speedo readout. How you doing? Ross. The international gearing at our speed limit put the motor in a bad spot in its rev range and the bike lived better in fourth than fifth on the highway.

Strip the old one with a product called Aircraft Stripper. It will be a rough cast but that is easy to sand down then polish. May be a little more work but you wouldnt have to bore out anything either. Just food for thought.
