I want to get some thoughts from those who have, or have had, both an S1 and an S2.
Reason being I'm thinking of adding an S1 to my stable.
The price is right and if the bike is nice then I will be very tempted.
The thing I'm wondering is; how different is the S1 than my S2?
What's the difference in power?
I know the S1 is suppose to have a bit more grunt.
I'm being told that this one is a S1W, so that means better heads and what-not.
But did the make a S1W in 1996?
How can I tell if it's a true S1W and not a S1?
How different are the ergonomics?
How is the S1 for highway cruising?

Given the choice between an S1 or an XB9R/S, which would be the best addition to or replacement for S2?

Ok, 2min on the internet answered one or two questions....
I guess it's just an S1.
Seems the S1 had a bit more hp than the S2 but not a whole lot more.
I'm guessing same heads, but more compression?

Si used Lightning heads..until the 98 S1W(IIRC), which then swithced to T-Storm..

Bigger cams as well...

A litte bit lighter(at least the wieght of your platics)...


Those are just the number/ things that I do know...

The S1 seemed to have a TAD less power than my X1, but, other wise, felt damn near identicle...

S1 aggressive riding +++++ power, frame is different, aggressive riding position,stiffer forks. S2 sport - touring riding position milder Eng more relaxed riding position less aggressive forks, softer,milder state of engine tune.Butch

Not purple: I've got one of each.

Short answer to your question: They feel completely different. The S2 corners like it's on rails, very stable, comfortable seat, it's a great long-distance bike. The S1, in spite of apparently identical geometry, feels almost "twitchy"-it'll change direction effortlessly, and wheelies/stoppies are a snap, if you're into that kind of stuff. But the seat is good for a tank of gas at a stretch, max.

You need one of each!

I want that S1 kick-stand!!!!!!!!!Also know it had issues.That can be made!!!!!!!Doe,s anybody know if Sportsters used them and what year?I tried to order once but Buell told me that only was a protoe kick stand on early S1s.Not in use any more.

S1 (I have a 98 S1W with T-storm motor) is a great toy. I love it for an afternoon of blasting around with no particular destination in mind. IIRC from riding a buddy's years ago, the S2 is much more relaxed, more for touring, more upright (except when on the sidestand, LOL) and a little more accomodating for a guy like me - 6'4". My height is the main reason I don't own an XB, actually...they're TOO compact. Light years ahead of the tubers...but too damn small for me.

I've been looking for a good (condition, price, location) S2/S3 to possibly take the place of my FLHP. I love my Road King because it's comfy for those trips from Maryland to Florida - and I can carry stuff in the saddlebags. A "bagger Buell" would be perfect for me : )

The S1 is a great curve and light to light bike just a lot of fun maybe a track day bike. The S2 is more sport tour and great Universal American Motorcycle. It is said that the XB really turns, final belt is easier to deal with but dealing with engine access is more complicated. I just have a problem with the dash.

I can't speak specifically to the S2 but I do have an S3T and S1W. For everyday riding, I prefer the S3T. It is a much more comfortable ride (ergos, seat, windscreen, etc). But for all out FUN...nothing beats my S1W. Every time I ride that bike, people stop and look.

The S1 is arguably the best streetfighter Buell ever built. It's best kept to short trips/commuting unless you can deal with a mountainbike sized seat and poor wind protection below around 100mph.

The S2 is likely the best sport-tourer Buell ever made. Ergonomically big, plush, stable. The only things I don't like are the stock XL-spec motor and Harley 1" hand controls.

Big difference. Should be an easy choice based on your needs.

XB's are great, but I'm not a fan of XB9's. They're just not as fun as 12's IMO. All XB's are very stable, very refined, and very reliable. If you do get one of the common Harley rockerbox or base gasket leaks, it's also a big pain in the ass as stated above.

Buell used lightened flywheels in 1996 and up (all but S2) models. In 2000 later models pressed flywheels were used that where further lightened.

I wouldn't worry about the heads...XB heads are the best anyway, though I wouldn't bother swapping Thunderstorms to XB heads (they aren't that much better).

I have a 98 S1 and a 98 S3 and they are like night and day.

The S1 is the ultimate beating around town, back roads type of bike while the S3 is a much milder mannered kind of bike.

The S3 is like your wife while the S1 is the red-headed mistress...............

Well I was going to go check out the bike this weekend but weather was not permitting.
I didn't see much use in braving thunderstorms to look at a bike I couldn't test ride or ride home.
Maybe next weekend will be better.

I've about set my mind on buying it IF it is in mint condition.
Anything less and I'll most likely just stick with the S2.

I like the analogy of the wife and the red-headed mistress. I was always a sucker for a red-head.
When I first got my S2 and started finding out about Buell, I was drawn to the S1.
I found myself wishing that I had found an S1 instead of the "big" S2.
But I've grown to appreciate my S2.
It's a great bike.
But the S1 to me seems so raw.
I like that.

yeah you know it's strange.
The X1 is newer, has more hp, fuel injection, PM wheels and Forcewinder, and a place for a passenger. And it's just a little more $ than the S1
While the S1 is mostly stock and 11yrs old.

But it's still tough to choose between those two.
