Hi all! Things have slowed on the project(lack of funds!) but here's an update for those who may be interested.
Cheers

Test fitting forks and new wheel

Refitted the trans, new closed end bearings to the right and below the pulley. Also note the grease nipple in the alloy 5th gear plug .

Isn't it greased by the transmission oil anyway?
How did all those 5th gear bearings survive?
Seems like a greasing overkill to me.

Ralph Little or no oil gets to these bearings!
look in the archives and tell me if my little zerk is overkill when you see the rusty and failed 5th gear bearings. My solution cost me around half an hour of my time and less than $2 for the grease nipple. All for a little insurance!

Each time I change engine oil I also pop off the little rubber factory plug and squirt a couple shots of fresh trans oil in the needle bearings. Then just pop in a new plug. I have several of the factory plugs I keep on hand. It's worked great so far.

Jim I've invested to much in the the project to give up, things have just slowed up as the funds have gotten low!

I can't wait to get it back on the road!
But i'll get there.

The amount of cash I've spent on this old tuba I could have bought a new XB!
But I think it's worth it.

Maybe you already discussed it on the old thread but what color paint do you plan for the body work?

Were you going to powder coat the frame that sunset orange like the wheels?

Looks great by the way. I really like what you did with the exhaust, especially the muller.

Mike thanks for the kind words.

The frame will be powder coated sunset orange and the body work will be pearl white with orange Buell decals on the tank.

The exhaust has been bit of an experiment. If I like the way it sounds once it is all back together I will try and make a new muffler out of lighter materials.

Are you changing to the later-style electronic speedo drive? I have thought about putting an XB front end on my S1W, but no way to drive the speedo - the 98 had cable drive off the front hub : (

Very cool project, though.

Joe(ratbuell) I'm going to use one of these Motogadget Classic speedo's. Just the one single gauge/tacho. I may still install an oil pressure gauge too as I'll have plenty of space.
here's a picture plus a link to there web site.
cheers

I got a little bored this afternoon so bolted my bike back together.

I'm going to get my old front tyre fitted to my new wheel in the morning so I can see what it looks like of the stand.

I'm going to use an XB lightning ignition lock setup, So I will need to work out were to weld a lug onto the steering head for the steering lock.
I will turn up a piece of ally to plug up the old steering lock hole.

Heres some pictures I have taken tonite.

Enjoy!
Jodie

Don't know about you guys but I think it looks pretty COOL!

Freaking Awesome!
I can't wait till it's finished.
It's things like this that have me tempted to tear into my bike.
But since it is my only bike right now, tearing it down for any length of time is just not worth it.

Lookin' good, Jodie!

I like the look of that trimmed cam cover, mine's not nearly as smooth. I've been meaning to make one of those 5th gear plugs, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Bad--s! Nice job on the convert. That is an awesome display of ingenuity. Wonder if it will handle differently, is it any shorter or lower? Hate to copycat but, it may just have to happen to my X1. Nice job.........Mattu

Matt thankyou : ) It is actually longer in the wheel base but it carries more weight on the front now as a result, where before it carried more weight to the rear. Time will tell...but I don't care to much as it looks the goods!

here's some more pictures I've just taken.

The last two pic's are of myself and 5month old son Brodie.

Jodie,

I don't think I've ever seen a baby look so tough on a motorcycle, cute kid!

The bike is gonna look feakin' awesome when done, it definitely looks good now. I also have to say that cam cover looks very nice, good clean work you've done.

Thanks Mike, Sometimes I feel this young fella will be riding by the time I get this bike done!!!
Between the Mrs and I we have 5 sons from 5 months to 13 years! I'll have to start saving to by bikes for them all!

I just finished painting my home made muffler.
I'm happy with how it came up.

Cheers
Jodie

Mike I did that cam cover with a 5" angle grinder, files and sand paper...no milling machine. Very time consuming.

Yeah I did one a year ago, just to try my hand at it. My brother-in-law machinist did the rough work, I was amazed at how much metal came off so quick! Finished with files and bead blasted it when done, still lots of work. Anyway I like your attention to detail, it will make a big difference when your project is done.

Once I have my engine back in my car I may tear into the bike, but will probably wait 'til winter, I need to enjoy this riding season.

I bead blasted mine too but then I painted it. I miss riding my bike but in Queensland you can ride all year round quite comfortably (NO SNOW) : )

here's the pipe fitted

Awesome job, so far!
When you tear it back down - post a pic (if there's not one already somewhere here) of how you did the upper shock mount on the tube frame.
Your bike makes me want to pick up some of the 'distressed' units that are available these days and make something similar!
