KBB doesn't allow you to add the fact that it has a salvage title.

That being said having a salvage title means it is not worth the normal retail value.

No dealer would take a bike with a salvage title so that right there should tell you something.

ALSO

Saying slightly damaged with a salvage title is like saying slightly dead.

For a bike or any vehicle to be deemed total loss the damage/labor has to exceed the vehicles blue book value at the time.

if the bike just fell over that is one hell of a fall, I could see it on a XB with the frame/gas tank but not on a tuber, I have done some major crashing on mine and never came close to a totaling out...

Now my final thought LOL
If you are not looking to sell the X1 in the near future then go for it but, with a salvage title I wouldn;t pay no more than 3500 because of the salvage title. Just take it for a test ride to make sure she rolls straight ;)

I agree with everything Spidy said, but $3500 is prob even way too high for a '8 out of 10' bike with a salvage title.

Nice X1's have sold on ebay recently for as low as $3900.

Like he said...only consider it IF you're gonna keep it, AND it rolls str8.

It would be good to know if they guy fixed the bike. Does he have reciepts showing parts purchased, or repairs completed? Was the frame replaced? Straightened?

There is more than one way to total a bike. If he can't give you good information that makes sense and continues to give you the "it just fell over" BS - walk.

Due to the nature of Buells engine mounting system, a frame that is slighly out of true will result in a lot of problems, even if the bike still seems to roll straight. You could be sheering off mount bolts in the heads, and blowing out isolators on a regular basis.

If I were even considering the bike, I'd want to see pictures of the damage when it was totaled. And, I'd inspect the frame and all the engine mounts as closely as possible. As in - remove the fuel tank and get in there...

These frame are strong as hell. I flipped mine in a bean field 1 1/2 years ago and the frame survived. Hellfire if the original white lightning plastic is there that says something. But I have also seen an x1 on this board look like a pretzal at low speed intersection crash. 5100 is top dollar. With a salvage title I wouldnt pay over 3- 3500 if it really does look nice and rides strait.

So asking $6,000 for my '02 X1 White Lightning with 5K miles might be too much? ; ) Did I mention it still has a factory warranty until April 07?

If the guy has receipts for the repair parts, you may be able to clear the salvage stain from the title. I did that with a Supra I repaired. Salvage just means that the ins co deemed it not worth repairing. As X-1's have pretty low resale, it doesn't take much to total them. A new set of body work, the tail section, maybe a primary cover, all the little bolt ons, plus labor...that could have totaled it. It may be a solid machine. I don't think it is worth what he's asking for it though.

WL is a beautiful bike. They come up for sale here a couple times a year or more.

Have you seen this X1 yet?

Or this X1 WL? GA, w/exc. refs.

I wouldn't buy a salvage Buell. The trannies are too sensitive to crashes. As are the frames/engine mounts, etc. Then if the guy is b/sing and wanting top dollar, I'd walk.

I don't see the WL's going for big $$ any time soon, but what do I know. IMO the S1 WL is more "collectible" or whatever, and they don't get much more than $5500, if that much.

IMO it will take a while for the "chopper fad" to die down, then maybe people will wake up and realize the value of a tube-frame Buell. For now the mass market sees them as disposable donors. So you'd prolly have to keep it for a few years b4 the market shifts. IMO.
