So I'm jumping into a bit of polishing for my winter project on my 2000 M2.

I bought some aircraft stripper and used it on my front rim and swingarm today. The stripper didn't do a thing to the coating on the rim and swingarm.

Anybody have a suggestion for a stronger chemical or name brand of a product that will remove this coating. I would rather not abrasive blast the rims and swingarm.

You are going to have to use media blasting on the wheels, they are powder coated(unless you want to spend an infinity sanding them). There is no coating on the swingarm, it's just cast aluminum (Unless someone powder coated it before you got the bike - in which case - media blast it).

You might want to look into this.

The best thing I have found for removing powder coat, is AirCraft Remover...

BE CARE FULL!!! that stuff burns...

But, it will bubble and lift that stuff right off...

Thats what i use to remove powder coat...

Yse that, and a paitn brush(glvoes, etc)..let it bubble off..

Then you can use high pressure water, or something of the sort to remove the crud..

start sanding and you are on your way...

BEWARE....

Polishing rims SUCKS...

Its sometimes better to have have them dipped, though I will not say against it..

On my '96 rims and '00 swingarm MEK didn't do it, neither did a labeled aircraft stripper. good old yellow can zipstrip did awesome tho, but I think it has a lot to do with the heat of the metal and the room. If you can sit them in the warm sun on a warm day it works best...
If your gonna polish the whole things why not just take a wire brush, or 80 grit to it??

"Actually there is a powder coat on the swingarm of a 2000 and newer tuber."

I think that was a mid-year change. My 2000 M2 doesn't have a painted swingarm or cases, but I've seen 2000 M2's that did have silver painted cases (not sure if the swingarms were painted on those particular bikes, though).

Thanks for the info guys. There is definitely a coating on my swingarm.

I asked around and the most common solution was to try zipstrip in a warm environment. So I'm going to give a try.

I'll report back in another week or so for future reference.

I bought my 2000 M2 in November 99 as a 2000 model converted to A S1. The cases were powder coated as was the swingarm.

That thing is so damn purty it makes my eyes hurt...

Sickquad-that's the stuff I used for my rims and swingarm, the cases I just took my time with 80-120 grit...

ZipStrip it is. Great results so far on my swingarm. Brush it on, wait a half hour, and then scrub off the coating which bubbles.

Hardest part was finding it. The website says Ace Hardware sells it but I couldn't find it. Had to order it through the site.
