I want to remove all except for lights, ignition, instruments. How practical, cheap, logical, etc. is this? Also, is VOES necessary? Thanks, Chad. | ||

The first step would be a standalone ignition. This will bypass the "brain box" and sidestand switch right off the bat, tho everything else still works as normal. You could run a stock dual-fire setup from an older Harley for as cheap as you could find the parts used. A new dual-fire runs about 100 bucks and might work with your coil. A new single fire can be had for under 300, tho you might need to get creative with the coil installation. You will need the VOES unless you go to a mechanical advance underneath the timer plate. This would entail either points or else an electronic trigger made for mechanical advance like the Dyna S or Compufire. Or you could really go crazy and stick in a side-mount magneto, good luck finding one. Or drill out the case and run a stock mag. The current chopper fad has sent mag prices thru the roof. I also don't know if you could machine the cases to accept a kicker any more. AFAIK there is still a federal mandate on turn signals for all bikes made after '72. Mmmi_grad, I'm still sleeping on the couch for the bike I bought a year ago. So, thanks, but I'll have to pass. Patrickh, I wish you weren't right, but I'm going to heed your words. Hippyjoe, Holy crud, man... you lost me. That sounds like a lot of stuff that I know nothing about. I was thinking that a simple electronic system is a happy electronic system... KISS, if you will. AFAIK--as far as I know RLTW--just some old army stuff, sorry, guess I had a flashback there... Also apologize for the confusion, it's not that difficult... Basically you need a new timer plate, one that isn't dependent on the brain box. You may or may need a coil, depending on your choice of timer plate. You may or may need the VOES, again depending on which timer plate you get. Eliminating the VOES means you'll need a mechanical advance unit, I believe around 30 bucks. You'll also have to check/oil it every year or two, depending on how much you wash your bike, ride in the rain, etc. As long as you're replacing the ignition, you may want to research a single-fire system. More expensive, and they require a different coil, but they have their advantages. Although honestly speaking single fire is basically a matter of opinion. Forget about mags, they're not practical for a Buell. Don't know why I brought it up. Another flashback, probably... I like my single fire, I explain why in the link above. I also like keeping all the turn signals, horn, etc. working, keeps the law off my back. There's also an ignition section in the KV. |
