Nope! You can get a billet spin on filter that works a little but if you really want a cooler that works good use a Jag or a Spurgin Cooler, My Spurgin works great. You can see a pic. of the Spurgin on my S1 in my profile. Hodakaguy | ||

I have one that came with my second bike (used, of course). Because of some horror stories of them spinning off, I never used it. | ||

I have one and it didn't seem to help with cooling despite the advertising. I can dig it out of my shed and send it to you at a significant discount, for example a good bottle of local micro brewed beer. It did look kind of cool..... Den | ||

Here's a similar one, half the price, and the fins are MUCH deeper, and oriented differently. Anybody ever test one of these slip-on deals with a bike with an oil temp gauge? Any observable difference? | ||

the HD one has fin orientation to take better advantage of the "prevailing wind", but does not appear to have enough increase in the surface area to make much difference. The one JV posted at least has a great deal of surface area and will move some heat, though it is hard to predict how much. | ||

I threw an oil temp. gauge in my oil tank and found that only under extreme conditions - 100F summer riding, high rpm, aggresive moutain riding, did the bulk oil temperature get to 210F. That's a little on the high side, but nothing to damage the engine. It's far cheaper and you get better protection if you just stick with synthetic oil and change the oil an additional time during the Summer. Mobil1 advertises their oils to a temperature much higher than that! If you race your bike in competition, get an oil cooler. Not just a "strap on" for your filter. If you think about, that's about the worst place to put one on -- down low and behind the front wheel! | ||

What about those things that screw on between the engine and the filter? Those look more effective to me. http://www.billetcool.com/s296series.htm (too expensive though!!) Mine only used to overheat in heavy traffic. I fixed the problem by turning the idle speed down to 900. | ||

Just testing by the seat of my pants the spurgin seems to work great, I don't notice any heat from it on my leg. I can place my hand on the cooler on a hot day and the cooler is hot, feed line is hot and the return line is much cooler so it must be doing something. Plus another advantage of the spurgin is the built in thermostat so your not running the cooler when its cold, there by letting your oil come up to temp. If you contact the Spurgin company direct they have a nice little billet bracket for the oil lines that mounts to the primary cover, really gives it a clean look. I think the spurgin looks a lot better than the Jag cooler but thats just my opinion and you know what opinions are like :-) Here are a few more pics of the cooler mounted on the bike. In the Florida heat an oil cooler is a must. The current Jagg 1390 is the updated version of the cooler I have. In 2000 when I put mine on, Jagg located the cooler on the side of the frame, not in front of the engine like today. Solid product. There's a bunch of oil-temp-gauge dipstick oil tank caps at the HD dealer. Would any of these fit Buell oil tank? The dipstick markings wouldn't matter. |
