Got the manual? If not look at the S-1 manual in the knowledge vault to get cam timing and R&R instructions. Not to hard, just time consuming.

heres a try

1. remove the rocker boxes, and push rods keep them seprated and matched from where they came as there are 2 different lengths (PRs)
if the bike is not so equipped get the updated steel rocker box gaskets.

If you have not removed the timer cover, sensor plate and timer cup from the cam cover do so now.
You will have to drill out the rivits in the decoritive cover watch for shavings. the timing sensor plate stays with the cover, unless you what some real big fun

Remove the timing plug between the cylinders, remove the spark plugs, this assumes that the cams and gears came out with the cover and the cam case is empty and find tdc

Inspect the oil pump driving gear on the crank for wear. consider putting the bronze one on while your in there.

2. with the load off of the tappets.
install the cams in this order
a. rear exhaust
b. rear inlet
c front exhaust
d. front inlet
oil this liberaly and keep it CLEAN

there are match marks on the gears be sure to line them up as they go in this will be a test of patience as this is all close tolerence fits and there is almost no slop, check that you have the correct cover gasket re assemble the cover,
reassemble the timing cup and plate leave the decoritive cover off as you will be checking the timing, (oh yeah get rivits for the cover too)

replace the RB gaskets and re assemble

I Recomend a copy of the FSM for your tool box its money well spent,

the oil pump driving gear on the crank is a critical item if there are bright areas on it and the teeth of the gear (on the crank) are noticably(SP) narrowed replace it 50$ gets the super duper bronze one,

skip it and that gear shreds

major damage

make sure that you have the correct gear cover gasket too.

YMMV
as FMJ suggests above the S1 manual will give you some insights on the procedure

good luck.

I second that motion on the factory service manual.

To add to what Oldog said, score a couple of marks on the timing plate and housing so you can line it back up when you reinstall it.

Also, as long as you have your cams out, maybe it's a good time to replace them. I just did that when I had to remove my cam cover. Give NRHS a call or email, and they can hook you up. http://www.nrhsperformance.com/

Here are a couple of threads on my own swap:

Second what Sanchez says, if you're working on the Y2K M2 that's listed in your profile.

There are several instances posted in the KV here of M2 cams of this vintage wearing prematurely, throwing metal in the oil and being a potential time bomb if left in.

If you search the Nallin site that Sanchez recommends, you will find that they highly recommend the SE "Bolt-In" cams for the M2. They're basically X1 cams that should go right in and give your bike a little more 'umph,' as well as not coming unglued.

Also the oil pump drive gear, very important, might as well replace it w/the bronze one while you're in there.

I'm basically in the same boat as you, just haven't pulled my cam cover yet. I already have the cams from Nallin, all other parts supplied by American Sport Bike, and the factory service manual sitting under my tool box. I just don't want to pull my rocker boxes 'cause the gaskets were updated... I'm going to start by pulling the rear, rotating the engine, and seeing if I can get by with that. If not, I can always pull the front to finish the job.

Good luck.

"Brag forum" Go to the top of this page, click on "topics". Then click on "Storm Fronts", then "Minnesota,Western Wisconsin Riders", scroll to the bottom of the page and post away.

I am in the middle of a car repair project.
otherwise I would give you a hand.

Can I ask why you pulled the cam cover?
