Found a local private owner selling a 2002 M2 Cyclone with just shy of 3000 miles. They are asking $5000.00 OBO.First, would this be a reasonable price?OBO means that price is negotiable. They say theres not a scratch on it.
I really like Buells-old and new-but am not real knowledgable about them. Isn't 2002 the last year of the "tube frame" Buells?Would this mean that by 2002 most of the little problems/recalls would have been taken care of? One reason I'm thinking of the M2 over the newer Buells is that I think the M2 might be better for a passenger-would this be true? The new Buells-other than maybe the new adventure tourer model-don't look like they are any good for a passenger-though I had fun test riding a Firebolt.
Thanks for any comments Jon Neet

5000 is a bit high even for a low mile model.
The 2002's were indeed the last of the tubers.
They were also the best sorted of them all.
They have everthing fixed that usually caused problems.
Jump on it if you can get them under 4500.
Is it totally stock? Any mods like intake or exhaust?

Keep in mind that you should probably replace the tires and intake seals.

Remind me to have Court remind you how the M2's are the best! (long running joke if you have been lurking for a while...)

M2's rock, but them I may be a bit biased..

I think 5K is probably a pretty good price considering the year and the condition. They go for less on ebay but then you have to deal with shipping cost if it's not local. If you can get it for $4800 it would probably be great.

Have you checked the NADA or Kelly Blue Book value?

M2's are good bikes.

My M2 is pretty sweet, but I wouldn't go THAT far Silas.
My wife complains sometimes that she has to share my love with a motorcycle though...

...hmm...

I think if you can get a 4 yr old bike with less than 3000 miles that retailed for over 9,000 for 5,000 that isn't bad. But it will need tires.

locacation also figures in, as has been noted -- if you can get the owner to knock off a couple hunnert for tires, grab it -- great bike, lots of available data (and mods, if you're so inclined), and the tubers rock!

Hey I would jump on it, I just did but it was a (BLUE) 2000 M2 with 2750 miles, he was asking $5200 but we wound up at $4750, and it has a lot of upgraded bits. But not the Y mount muffler hanger, so spent some more right away. It's amazing how much you can spend on this bike, there's always just one more thing I want...

I've put 20K miles on it in the last couple years... and it's still going strong!

Went over tonight to check out the M2.Unfortuneteley it was getting dark, but the bike appeared absolutely perfect (couldn't see the tire tread though). The seller wasn't really prepared though.I got there and the battery was dead.He had let it sit for the winter. The bike is totally stock.Hes going to borrow a battery charger and charge it up, and I'll go back Saturday in the light and test ride it etc.It has 2400 miles on it.
This was not off to a good start here, but this bike truly looks like its still on the showroom floor.I'm thinking about, if it rides okay, waving $4500.00 at him.

Bird,
Just a thought, but heck...Wave 4000 first and see what happens. The worst thing he can do is say NO, and you never know.
Good Luck.

If you are looking to ride a passenger I would recommend a S-3/S-3T.

Birdmove, M2's do everything very well. You can rip the twisties, road trip, commute, general hooliganism type acts, endless list.

If you do in fact end up with that bike let us know and go through the KV.

Oh, yea, the black ones have at least 7HP more than any other color and probably like 10HP more than the blue ones :-)

bird -- the seller's lack of preparation may give you a slight advantage in the bargaining -- if it was me, I'd not make any insulting offers, but woulod be prepared with wads of cash in different pockets (4K in one, another 500 in an other, and so on)

5K is a bit steep, but not outrageous if all the old nail needs is tires and a battery

My Y2K MaDuece has done track days, 700 mile days, week long smell the roses type rides, commuting, apex strafing on Road X with some truly twisted individuals form an organization that shall remain nameless, it's the modern version of a Triumph Bonneville -- a standard motorcycle that can do everything splendidly

it is, of course, best in black

"...the black ones have at least 7HP more than any other color and probably like 10HP more than the blue ones..."

Yeah, but I had my M2 painted a custom metallic silver (forced to by crash damage) and I know for a fact (actually a lie) it's faster than the original Cobalt Blue (not even the color I wanted), which was MUCH faster than black (or as fast).

I got dyno sheets (not really) to back this up.

I also have Erik's signature on the bike which makes it even faster (this part is actually true).

Bird,
The condition of the tires (tread wise) isn't the issue, it's their age.
Even if they look great, they are most likely harder than they should be.
They need replacing after 5 years...

Also, the battery being dead isn't a surprise.
Anything after three years or so is a freebie.
They get shook up pretty good and the take a lot of heat abuse being do close the the rear cylinder and header.

If you can score this one, DO IT! You won't regret it.
Use the above info as a bargaining point.

Even if it is slower than the Blue ones! ;)

The molten orange ones are noted for their wheelie ability, but I think it's stretching it to say it was faster than cobalt blue.

Black and yellow..., sure.

Birdmove:

The price depends on your patience and willingness to walk away. Average retail in the March 2006 Motorcycle Consumer News is given as $4445 for a 2002 M2. I expect that actual prices will vary greatly across the country. If you are willing to look and not buy on emotion (pretty hard thing to do when you have bike fever) you can find some great deals on used Buells.

Easy for me to say because I already have a 2000 M2 (upgraded to 2001 shifter, isolators, tach kit, recall shock, exhaust hanger, rocker cover gaskets, primary tensioner). Last year I decided I wanted to look for a 2001 or 2002 S3T. I gave myself a one day's drive search radius and started looking. Surprisingly, I even found two brand new 2002 S3T's. Patience for me was easy because my M2 kept my Buell fever in check until I found the right one. I wound up buying one from a Honda dealer in December with snow on the ground. He took the bike in trade and had it for months; couldn't sell it, and didn't want to wait until Spring in hopes someone would walk into his Honda shop and fall in love with a Buell.

Good luck,
Mark

PS: There are new unregistered 2003 Buells out there too. You can call Buell customer service and ask them to do a search. You will get a new bike but you will take a BIG depreciation hit

I actually just purchased that exact bike that Birdmove was looking at for $4200. It looks as good as new and the tires are in great shape. Needs a new battery though. Any suggestions on battery replacement, or should I just go to my dealer?

I just did change the battery on my 2k M2, not because it died, I just felt like 5 1/2 years was pushing it. The factory battery from the dealer is the best way to go - it was even cheaper than any other battery I looked at. It was so reasonable, I bought another one as a gift for a friend of mine who just got back from Iraq.

I called Chunky River HD about the 2002 S3T in November. He was pretty firm at $8500 at the time. The bike is new BUT.......does not have a factory warranty. I think if I pressed hard enough, he may have thrown in an aftermarket warranty of some sort.

Chicago Harley may be the only dealer in the US with a new unregistered 2002 S3T. At least they had it in November. I talked to Tim who I bought my M2 from back in 2000. Tim new I was a potential serious buyer but he would not budge below $9000.

I was tempted on the Chicago Harley bike but the depreciation hit would be just too great.
