I am thinking about going back to stock on my M2. I think that my recently re-packed V&H has already gotten throaty. The whole re-re-re-pack idea seems futile, just to look cool? Is there a big difference in performance? | ||

if you don't repack a V&H ss2r it'll fall apart from vibrations, first the back mount then the front. besides the sound benefit, the packing provides shock absorption for the mounts. | ||

I have yet to have a performance or cosmetic issue with my stock muffler. It may not sound as good to others, but it is a triple pass automotive style muffler, with no packing to worry about. I love the sound of the stock muffler, nice grumble at idle, and a decent tone on WOT that isn't deafening. You can keep your jetting & intake the way it is now, and you may even notice a low end torque increase with the stock unit. If you want to go back to the stock muffler, a brand new unit will be $215.00 with a new torca clamp at $6.50. We offer a 10% BadWeb discount. Silas: I have tried a few of variations to the stock muffler. 1. I bought a used S3T which had the stock muffler totally gutted. Both end caps were cut off, the insides taken out, and the caps welded back on. This set up was way to loud for me. I took this off the S3T and replaced it with a Wileyco. 2. I took the stock muffler on my M2, cut off the end cap (simultaneously sawing through the outlet pipe). The pipe coming from the exhaust header dead ends and has 3 or 4 holes in it's side. This makes the exhaust gas turn 90 degrees before it can flow out the outlet pipe. Before welding the cap back on, I cut back a the outlet pipe once I was inside the muffler. I then painted it with high heat black and was ready to go. The sound quality is good and not much louder then stock. I do not hear the exhaust at 70 MPH. It has a free'er flowing sound. I have noticed a consistent improvement in fuel economy too. After riding it like this for about a year, I decided to open up the flow a little more. I took a drill bit extension and fed a 1/4" bit through the exhaust pipe to put an additional hole in the internal exhaust baffle. This allows me to tune the flow and sound by adding holes. You can check e-bay for stock mufflers. I bought one to modify for about $30 with shipping a couple of years ago. The seller was nice enough to include all the bracketry and mounting hardware with it. Mark | ||

Silas, IF the header stops in front of the motor, and the muffler has to make a a 90* bend, OR there is a second pipe, between the muffler and the header, yeah, its stock. IF, you do need a stock header and muffler, I do have both, they are off an X1, so you would need to put a short cap bolt in the O2 sensor bung..but... If you want, email/pm me.. Anyway, IF the header comes down, in front of the motor, and then turns toward the rear, then hooks to the muffler directly, you have a race header.. IF I am not mistaken, teh pipes on 99 and up, M2s, X1s, and S3s are the same, with the exception of a sensor bung on the rear pipe, on teh X1 and S3. Here's my stock S3T, does this header look familiar?  Stock headers usually have a cracked gold finish, bluing at the cylinder head, and O2 sensor on rear and terminate just about the middle of the engine at the bottom. | ||

To all, my header is painted, it is the 2.5 collector that ends right in front of the engine so it appears to be stock. My carb has had the idle screw plug knocked out so I guess it has been jetted, no problem, I will check it out before long. I have the upgraded Y hanger. I will contact each of you who offered a setup and see what fits, etc.on a plane going to NJ and won't be back til later BUT I AM. Gonna do this!thanks to all | ||

BOZO...if Silas doesn't want it, I may buy it from you...I was thinking of cutting off the ends, gutting it and trying to stick a glasspack in it to muffle the sound (from gutted) a little while maintaing the look and markings of stock (in case the new laws ever take hold). Let me know. Jason | ||

02, yes. 99 and up, M2, X1 and S3s have the same headers, and muffler, only difference, is, the M2 doesnt have a O2 sensor....the X1 and S3(99and up), have an O2 sensor, BUT, you can plug it... Chase | ||

I think all the 1200cc tubers of that time period had the same muffler. I got a stocker from Ebay for $15 (plus $20 shipping) I have to say that it kills the midrange but not the peak power. Also, mine seems to run more hot in traffic. | ||

I don't plan to Leave the stock exhaust stock...I want to play with it a little and see what I can do to make it LOOK stock, but sound better and run better...I don't want to just gut it...I guess I will see once I get my hands on one, cut it open, and see what there is to work with... | ||

Ditch the stock & get a Vance & Hines on EBay. Midrange power goes up. Much more ride able. Better power where you need it. It is a bit louder. (I have been wearing earplugs, while riding, for years anyway, and don't really notice.) | ||

Greg and others, I received a stock muffler from Greg [AKA"Buellbozo"] and I am gonna try it out [thanks again, Greg]. I need a "Z Bracket", the rear hanger that bolts to the swingarm block. I envision that there are a whole lotta these laying around. If anyone has one they can part with, lemme know. I am also gonna try a D&D and maybe try a modified stocker in addition to the stock muffler. The Vance and Hines is usable except for the repacking every 1000 miles and the TEDIOUS job of removing the muffler to do maintenance. Removing the stocker looks like a 4 bolt deal...? | ||

I don't know Silas... I've just mounted my V&H, removed it a week later to install American Sport Bike urethane bushing in my old style hangar. Seems a LOT easier to mess with than that heavy stocker... Had to keep the bracket in case I go back some day. I stole yours off e-bay. | ||
