Hi all. I have an 96 S3 , the orginal showa ( with the remote reservoir) was leaking badly. I was able to purchase a near new ( 75 miles) Cyclone shock off
Ebay for $35
However the preload on it is way too small when myself (180lbs) and my wife (140 lbs) ride . Its so bad that the drive belt rubs on bumps. I want to be able to take my SO ( she looks so nice in leather ) . How is the preload adjusted on these , there is no lock nut etc @ the back of the shock. Is it a question of dropping the front of the shock and twisting it ? If so which way to increase the pre-load.

The preload is adjusted by turning the can. Moving it toward the rear, less threads showing, increases preload. There should be a jam nut on the threads. S3's have heavier springs than M2's, might want to swap springs. Check out the KV Suspension Service Bulletins. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/bulletins/ShockRecall99-00.pdf

Do you know if you have the SRP shock?

Ok this shock does not have the locknut set up that the S3 shock has, so the recall notice does not apply to this particular shock . I have included a picture of the shock so maybe that might help. All this has is the compression setting turn screw at the back of the shock. I'm not sure whether this is the SRP shock( not sure what that is).
Here is a picture of the rear of the shock. I tried turning twisting the shaft with a really big screw driver in the eyelet , and using a large wrench to hold the nut , no luck .

I'm not sure, but it looks like you have a non-reservoir shock that came on a recalled 2000 M2. That shock looks identical to the SRP shock that my bike had, but without the factory updates. You might want to run the PN by a dealer.
