I purchased a 95 S2 a couple of years ago and continue to work the bugs out of it. Right now I’m at a loss as to what to check next with my current problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

Last fall a new stator and voltage regulator were installed and this spring I installed new plugs, wires and replaced the compufire ignition with a new one. After about 100 miles of riding the rear cylinder starts to cut out and the bike back fires and sputters. If I replace the plugs, it’s good to go again for about another 100 miles. The only ignition component I didn’t replace were the coils, but they tested out fine.

Thanks for any tips on what to look at next.

Recheck the plug wires and ALL the wiring for the ignition, could be a bad plug wire, broken wire, one at a connection or a bad ground.

How is front running?Maybe too rich on carb.Do a compression check.Any other symptoms when rear plug goes away.S-2's have circuit breakers that love to corrode and a symptom of this is dropping a cylinder, but the tach will run 1/2 speed also.

you could also look for an intake leak around your front cylinder, thats a quick check with can of starter fluid. if it was both cylinder cutting out you could also check the pink tack feed wire,, if something rubs threw the jacketing and shorts it out as it vibrates it will intermittently kill the coil,, giving you no spark,, but this would affect both cylinders. i would look for a intake leak and do a compression check like fireman said.. hes a goo roo at this stuff. what dose the front plug look like when you pull it? color? smooth? shiny? whiskery? wet?

Is it possible to swap the coils?
Sometimes coils will test OK when cold but short our internally when warm.

I first replaced the intake seals when this started happening. I'm going to get my hands on a compression tester and check out the cylinder. I have thought about just swapping out the coils as they are about the only ignition component that hasn't been replaced. I'm also going to look at the circuit breakers and clean them up...fun fun

Those breakers are cheap at the local auto parts place so replace if they are corroded and carry a spare.

Hey Pete,

First thing for any diagnosis, is to determine if the problem affects one or both cylinders. If its only one, then there are alot fewer components to check out. Get the service manual if you need more detailed info.

My guess is its an electrical problem based on the bike's age (and knowing what problems S2's can have over 113K miles of ownership :-). Be thorough with your testing and swapping, and you'll find the cause. Good luck.

Hey Jim, yeah I'm back ('caus Rex keeps buggin' me)

Sadly, haven't ridden the S2 for many moons! Latest project has been to fix/restore my brother's 1978 XLCR. Such a blast from the past--seeing how Buell evolved the Sportster engine from those early days...

Been riding the XLCR around, doing the breakin thing. Well, either the XLCR or the Firebolt, weather permitting....

Not to frighten anyone with a pre-Buell :-) but here's what the Willie G designed XLCR looks like:

I love the lines of the XLCR. Now if it would just handle like a Buell!!

GB, the BLURR lives, but at the hands of many others. pretty much only have the frame and a few odds and ends left. FMJ has the engine, it's in his Bonneville bike. long story, deserves at least a couple of high-quality beers to do it justice, if not at Laguna maybe you'll consider riding to Lake Isabella with FMJ this fall for Oktoberfast? : )
