the front brake rotor on my 1996 s1 rattles horribly at idle i looked in the vault and didn’t find any ideas besides the anti rattle kit which is discontinued
any ideas besides buying the same stock components

The rattle is "normal" to some extent.

Rumor has it that some discontinued parts and kits are actually not discontinued. Daves or others on the site here can probably tap the source to confirm the availability or discontinuance of the kit. Your next option is up upgrade to the newer style rotors.

Another option is to take your rotors apart and bend the wave washers by hand. This will stop the rattling for a while but after about 2,000 miles it will come back. I have also heard that by just going to a hardware store with with washers in hand you should be able to find thicker washers which will eliminate the problem.

Tod...I have an anti-rattle kit somewhere in the garage. I opened it but decided to replace my rotor instead. Let me see if I can find it.

And yes...it is truely a discontinued item (because it wasn't a stock part)

The problem is indeed the wave washers. The heat from braking eventually takes the "spring" out of the "wave." A very nice man named Court Canfield helped me with a replacement kit long after it was discontinued by the factory....

I fixed my rattling rotor by replacing it with a 2000 model.

tod: if it's rattling too much then the carrier/rotor might be wearing out, in which case a quick fix may not be your best option... mine was getting progressively louder and more obnoxious until i had it replaced with a new (stock) carrier and rotor... the rattling is nearly nonexistent now!

Put one of THESE on and be done with it....

Seriously, don't waste your time trying to make that one work better. It isnt' just the wave washers, its the carrier. 6 buttons aren't up to the task the half circles deform a bit, and the rotor rattles. The 2000 spec rotor has 9 buttons, and they just don't rattle. They MIGHT warp if you're brutal to them, but no more than the one you have would in the same circumstance. The 2000 spec rotor is amazingly inexpensive for what it is.

I need a few for a project. I don't care if they are warped as they aren't going to go back on a bike.
I just want the old 6 button style.
If you have one that you're going to junk, I'll pay shipping and a little extra for your time.

ya you might be right Al but i kind of like the cast iron that rusts up every time gets even slightly damp but will never warp
