Oh, yeah, that's a "lawyer input hyper woke" non apology if I ever read one. I could have more empathy for these well meaning fools if they hadn't published it. The "owners", I mean. I have some empathy for the employees who destroyed their own jobs. I'm just going to GUESS here, but I'd bet it was crazy making to work where the "boss" buys expensive coffee and sells it at a loss, gives access to dirtbags with a sob story, and has inconsistent attitudes. I know people that work at shelters and food banks. Some are ultra Schmiberals, but they Mean Well, and all fail without some hard nosed people who understand you can't allow assault and robbery if you want to do any good in a community. I applaud them, even contribute a little, but I couldn't hold my temper working there as an unpaid volunteer. ( One friend was a bar bouncer and splits his time between the food bank and the Women's shelter. As he puts it, "I use up all my nice and patience with the poor families who need help, and take out the mad on the dirtbag men who try to get to their ex in the shelter so they can beat them again. The police love me." ) ( and they all know him by name and are very friendly ) | ||

One of the points of the above editorial... That "kids nowadays" don't go out and DO anything, is partially correct. There's still young folk learning to ride bikes and motorbikes, and even more strenuous sports and hobbies, but I've observed the percentages are MUCH lower today than a few decades ago. I don't make any claims for numerical rigor. But I do have examples. Hang gliding, the SCA martial arts, and I suspect motorcycling, all are "graying", the people I SEE doing it are more old farts than young bucks. Not completely, it's not the End Days Yet, but between not recruiting young blood, and increasingly nanny State regulation, I see far fewer beginners. Oh, and cost. Even with Bicycles, the cost of entry seems prohibitive. The "good" news on that, is used gear is a bigger bargain than ever, for sad reasons. The "cool toys" like motorcycles and performance bicycles are ( according to the sales guys at the shops ) increasingly older, wealthier, guys, and it's more and more common to have the bike shop with a bunch of used machines in almost new condition, that were bought, put in the shed, never used, the buyer pass away, and the relatives bring the ( often Thousand$ of buck ) adult machines back to sell on consignment. The really sad part is that means the hypothetical teen grandkid either never got considered to get the toy, or wasn't interested in getting grandpa's Gold Wing. ( or Colnago racer ) As soon as I finish this rant, I'm going to start lacing up a new wheel set for my Trike, and from the reactions of the multiple local bike shops I bought the parts from, I'm almost the only customer left who does that. But to be fair, I was in the tiny minority who built my own wheels last century too. I'm betting most of the folk here count themselves more as Do-ers than Watch-ers in life. Which may explain the more conservative/libertarian slant among those willing to risk being flamed for comments. YMMV. | ||

As to the Sexual Devolution... Flirting has become a minefield. It is still true that a guy can get laid by the old method of hitting on every girl that they see, ( If you have a 5% success rate, 20 flirts isn't bad ) and the guys who use that tactic are the same jerks we probably hated all our lives, the guys that exploit girls and leave them angry at all of us. But flirting with 20 girls at the bar today doesn't get you 17 rejections and 2 drinks thrown at you. You are likely to get 1 full on screaming fit for your efforts. And if your chosen mate hunting ground isn't a public bar, ( which chooses for alcoholic and desperate ) but is a social organization like your Church or Club, ( which chooses for like minded and mutual interests ) the Screaming Karen who reacted badly to "nice dress" may get you shunned, yelled at, and ejected. No, my "complaint" about the hipster burning man Glamping garbage dump leaving concert goers is more fundamental. Yeah, I do claim decades of camping at mass events. But we picked up our trash and our rich Daddies didn't buy us expensive camping gear to abandon after one use, leaving tons of expensive garbage in our wake. Yeah, I do have expensive tent and pavilion gear so my friends can gather in variable weather and I have an actual bed to invite willing partners to share. I bought it out of my own income and budgeted my hobbies over years. Saved up. Take pride in it's maintenance. We've had weddings in camp in a thunderstorm. Hilariously, an Asatru ( Norse church ) wedding where the legal pastor was a Masonic Knight Templar & Grand Loremaster, ( I might have that slightly wrong, sorry ) who gave a very inspirational sermon on responsibility in marriage in fine Christian and Asatru tradition, in a steady rain, the couple exchanged vows. Then when the pastor blessed their union and invoked Thor, lightning split the sky on cue and the skies opened up with a heavy downpour, and accompanying light show. We partied until someone went to the camp restroom and returned with the announcement that the camp was flooding. That broke the Party up and rescue ops began. Long into the morning. Seriously. I have witnesses. About 50. Anecdote aside, my complaints with "kids nowadays" isn't just the wasteful consumption and trail of expensive trash they leave behind at concerts, etc. I Like concerts. It's the passive conformity. MY counterculture DID stuff. We gathered in vans to party, yes. But we also rode mountain bikes over, well, mountains. We didn't have bike parks, we had unimproved cow paths. We climbed mountains and then flew off them. We came to the attention of The Authorities, not because we blocked traffic, but because we had the temerity to build flying machines and started soaring cross country. ( I'll never forget the expression on the face of the Beech Bonanza pilot as he flew Under me a mile up over the Genesee river valley ) We were the "pack it in, pack it out" campers who tried to get into the 46er ranks by climbing the highest peaks in the Adirondacks. I still don't give a darn about "like, subscribe, obey". ( points for reference ) Not all kids are NPC drones in life, to be fair. But Burning Man? Spoiled brats. | ||

It's always possible that there will be a last minute change in how you consider the politicians between voting and Election Day, so that's a concern. In 2020 it was, in my mind, between a guy I didn't like who was doing a good job except for listening to some wrong people, and a guy who'd bragged about blackmailing a country to fire a prosecutor that was investigating the company that hired his crack head son, obviously to bribe the Veep. We now know that it was Worse, that Joe* & Hunter had taken 10 million dollars in the most blatant Quid Pro Quo of the 21st century, after the green light to Putin by Obama to conquer the Crimea, in exchange for quiet before the election. So you probably won't go wrong if you vote on principles. You can still be fooled by a really dishonest guy. For example if "republican x" that promised Family Values and National Defense, in the week before the election reveals he's in favor of mandatory ( REDACTED BY ORDER OF GOOGLE ) in schools to get the Democrat vote. | ||
