Hi Hugh, I'll be down on the 27th. Like you said earlier, it was a PITA getting a room booked. As always, looking forward to getting out of town.

Glad you got in, Mike.

Anyone else interested in coming that has not booked a room yet- see the last post on the main event thread linked above. It gives an overview of accommodations in the area.

One of these days, we're going to hook up, Hugh!! That's an AHRMA race weekend in Michigan and I'm helping out a racer there. Thanks for organizing this, but while my intentions are good, my execution won't permit my attendance!!

One week to go. We got in yesterday afternoon.

Bad news in case you missed it on the other thread- the restaurant is closed for renovations. They are offering free continental breakfast in the second floor game room, but no dinner on the deck with a view and a beer or two after a hard day of riding. OTOH, there are quite a few restaurants within about seven miles of the hotel.

See you next Friday.

I need to get back to this event. Had a blast the last time I was there! When you're looking off the road side balcony, due east I believe... and you see the mountain ridge, there is a dirt road that runs north and south that we took with our DR650's

Twas a GREAT TIME.

I think you guys rode the farthest that year. I noticed 3 Ohio bikes under the shed this morning.

Come on down!

I have been scoping out the roads, and trying to hit some I have not been on recently. Today I rode over to Burnsville and took NC 197 south. It starts out as a 55 MPH 2 lane following a creek down a valley and it has some nice sweepers as well as a few tight turns. Past the little community of Pensacola, it makes a hard right, starts climbing and the the turns get serious. Approaching the top of the mountain, you hit a series of hard switchbacks at the Eagles Nest, which I presume is a resort or exclusive housing development. The road goes about another mile, then turns to gravel for about 5 miles before hitting pavement again and continues on the Asheville. I did the whole thing a few years ago, but the gravel section is pretty gnarly so once was enough for me. I make a 180 where it turns to gravel and head back north.

Here is the google maps shot of the road at Hawks Nest showing the switchbacks.

Here is the turn entering the first switchback.

If you look past my bike, you can just see the road as at zig-zags down the mountain.

SO many good roads here.

We have at least 4 Badwebbers in the area: me, Twig, Rcontroler and his son Darren. I have not seen Damnut but I presume he is staying somewhere nearby if not here. Buelltours and a couple of others are riding up from Hendersonville in the morning, and Nelandrew is riding up from Columbia in the morning, so we should have a decent crowd.

The plan is to meet at the overlook in front of the Skyline Village Inn around 11 AM. We will ride from here down the mountain and around the north side of Lake James to Fonta Flora Brewery in Nebo for lunch. The annual Jaguar meet is taking place tomorrow at the Switzerland Inn, so we may check that out too.

We had a pretty big group today; 6 Buells on site (5 Ulys and one S2). Damnut had to head over to the nearest Cycle Gear ~70 miles away to get a new back tire after his got toasted on his long ride down from Massachusetts, plus a side trip to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday. The rest of us rode up to the Switzerland Inn and checked out the Jaguar show, then took the Parkway over past Linnville Falls and took NC-181 down the mountain. The temp must have jumped 20 deg. F when we got off the Parkway. From 181, we rode around the north side of the lake and to Fonta Flora Brewery for some chilled beverages. After that, we split up with Andrew headed back to Columbia, Cornel and crew headed to Hendersonville and I came back to the Skyline.

It was a great gathering apart from unseasonably high temps. Twig and Damnut are hanging around until tomorrow, so we may get another good ride or 2 in yet.
