Weapons of war? Isn’t it over 50 years since US soldiers have carried a semiautomatic rifle? These clowns!

I'm thinking of getting a 30 cal rifle again. I think the M&P10 may be the one. I've been wanting one forever.

I'm thinking a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x scope or maybe a Sig Bravo 5 fixed 5x prismatic.

A B5 Bravo stock would probably work well.

Or maybe just a fancy butt pad.

Ducbsa:

The Browning BAR/M1918 is over a hundred years since it’s first service in WW-1. That was full auto capable.

The M1 Garand entered service in 1933, 89 years ago.

The M1 Carbine came into service in 1944, 78 years ago.

The M16 went into service in 1964, 58 years ago.

Popular civilian rifles like the Thompson machine gun and others have been around for a 100 years or more.

Cars in dull colors. Matt black has always been the "Rat" color for hot rods and rust buckets.

https://www.motor1.com/features/461517/best-car-co lors/

https://www.thedrive.com/news/37001/this-graph-sho ws-how-car-paint-colors-have-gotten-more-boring-ov er-the-years

Economists, who are acolytes of one "school" ( cult variant ) or another came up with the "Yellow Car" theory of prosperity. More yellow cars, better economy. Back in the 1970s.

The theory may be valid, as it used consumer choice and mood as indicator, and everyone loves a simplistic answer to complex problems. It doesn't take into account factory/management choices, where yellow might just not be an option or a rare, extra cost color. Hard to be an indication of attitude if it isn't a choice. ( you'd think car companies would have a team analyzing color choices of customers to optimize sales in cars built for inventory. )

So... Relevant to thread?

Sorta. Guns were silver, grey, ( in the White ) blued, and black. Black was the cheap paint color common to Communist Crap and poor workmanship.

Good blue-ing was dependent upon good process control ( even temperatures and jigging for a consistent color ) and surface finish. That's why the Colt Python has it's own famous colour, an extra labor finish. Polished Costs More.

Different options today. FDE & other colors are marketed to military enthusiasts etc.

Camo is it's own subject, and even more faddish. With photorealistic stuff for hunters, some companies offer "nostalgia" camo paint jobs with Vietnam era patterns.

And as a joke and rebellion, one company makes bright colors named after NYC boroughs to tweak the former anti gun freedom Mayor.

I have a personal policy not to post pictures of weapons to avoid persecution from... Whoever.

I don't have a vindictive Ex who might use a picture of my Winchester as exuse/evidence of domestic violence potential/retribution, but it's a known phenomena that hit people I know.

I DO live in The Imperium, where the glorious leader might ban my 1894 deer rifle as a psychopath weapon of war! ( actually used as one! ) Also the finish is mediocre. ; )

I don't in the least object to you posting, and rather enjoy it. Carry on.

Badweb, thank Blake and the deity of his choice, isn't "social media insane". ( although some may argue : ) ) So you probably won't have paid activists protesting your house for posting a scary looking pistol or gas guzzler. ( THANKS!!! )

My next gun purchase might be customized for color. Or a refurbish project. And I've already decided on nerf/toy/anime type colors.

I'm normally a fan of dull stainless on metal parts. And ok with black plastic furniture. But it's the 21st century and a Hello Kitty & pink rifle gets attention on the range. : )

So why not customize?

Also it's sacrilegious to "ruin" a classic. And I have this old beat up 1894...

Suggestions?

History note.

The Winchester model 1894 was used by the British Navy in WW1 to detonate naval mines.

The Lee Enfield was in demand for ground troops, and the use of Naval Infantry was waning, but not gone, so the military rifles were sent to the ground forces, and a mix of odd guns went to training and ship duty.

Even if you aren't sending the crew of a destroyer to storm a fortress like a frigate crew in the Age of Sail, you need a sailor with a gun to guard the ship in port. And naval mines were a major threat.

Japanese, Russian, American, whatever! Odd ammo you sure don't want to send to the front to screw up your logistics isn't as big a deal for limited Navy use. The logistics office just needed to know that HMS Indomitable might need .303 and .30-30 for HMS Magnolia, a sweeping sloop, who might be slowly cruising the Channel or coast looking for mines and submarines. See a mine, and a sailor would plink at it until it goes up.

Thus.. The 1894, a proud Weapon of War.

Hey, personal choice. : )

I'm in The Imperium. While it hasn't happened to me, friends with Concealed Carry permit have been arrested for "brandishing" when some Karen at a restaurant caught a glimpse of leather. Not even a visible gun.

Not prosecuted, but the hassle and cost.

Then they passed the SAFE act after midnight in secret and suddenly entire collections became felonies. And the registration drive didn't work like they wanted. Some folk like me gave away or sold now banned stuff. Others? None of my business.

And yes, as soon as I hit send, this post goes into a database along with the rant I had yesterday at the bicycle shop about the Tour protesters.

Also, not big on selfies. There's entire sports I don't have a single picture of myself doing.

Not big on selfies myself either (perfect face for radio!).

I have been "outed" by a Karen at a gig, though. Security and I spoke, "yes, I have my wear and carry permit; may I get back to work, I need to finish setting up and we start playing in eight minutes"...smiles, and end of discussion.

Maryland - once you get your permit (which has become less of an ordeal thanks to SCOTUS), the state does not distinguish between concealed or open carry. So, if I print, flash, show, or wear open on my hip...legally, it's my right. Hence, the no-hassle when Karen had a fit. If my hand had been on the grip? That's a different story altogether. But holstered and untouched, and simply "in view"? Not a problem (legally; tactically is another story).

Nearby in VA and WV? Open carry is Constitutional Carry, no permit required. CONCEALED carry requires a permit (which I have through reciprocity to my PA non-resident permit - MD has zero reciprocity either way, so I went and got PA right after my MD, years ago).

Upshot?

KNOW YOUR LAWS.

We've been on the losing end of "gun safety" since 1935.

Gun safety and marksmanship should be required curriculum. Instead it's been the standard practice to propagandize and miseducate.

More gun safety to punish the law-abiding. This doesn’t match up to the recent Supreme Court decision, to say the least.

I watched the body cam uncut video of the Columbus cops dealing with an uncooperative jerk. What a Maroon.

I'm an old fart who can't kneel without pain and has medical conditions that could let a jackass cop kill me by positional torture. ( not quickly or easily, and no drug overdose in progress, but restrict my breathing for minutes, and I won't react well. )

But I'm also not an arrogant jerk who would refuse to obey within reasonable time frame. I completely understand those cops were in reasonable fear for their lives, responding to a call, where some fake cop may be pulling a scam and thus has already jacked the criminal danger level. They are equally concerned if he was a Real Cop especially a FED, who is armed and dangerous. ( Feds have a deserved reputation as arrogant jerks. AND the most likely to be dangerous imposters. )

Blue on Blue is a serious concern.

Fake cop, armed, loons, are even more scary.

As a First Responder to accident scenes, plain clothes, I'm careful when the cops arrive so they know I'm not a threat or bad guy robbing the crash victim. Consider what CPR looks like if you just came up on it! It's easier in uniform, I'm still not "one of us", to the cops, but I'm automatically in a different response category.

The important part is my apparent/perceived assumption of authority. As a First Aid guy, I obviously don't claim control of the situation once police arrive. I can be a "trained to be controlling" loud guy when I am first on scene. Crowd control is a function of perceived attitude. You want to keep people away from downed power lines and gasoline spills, but priority is to the injured. If you're solo, you don't want more victims, and have to keep situational awareness.

Bottom line is... In a confrontation with police, obey as well as you can, defuse tensions with calm and rational speech, don't escalate, don't argue. Get them down off their, and your, adrenaline rush, then you can politely try to get out of trouble. If you have to, sue the crap out of them, later, but don't antagonize armed, scared, angry men with idiot s%&t like "you work for me" or insults.

To be honest, my first reaction to "do you know who I am?" is pretty darn negative. How about you?

So...who has a weapon-light suggestion?

I have a new puppy at home (she's 11 weeks and 15 lbs already)...but a bird of prey has been watching my yard closely when she's out (always with my 50 lb husky mix, never alone). That got me thinking "the AR would make quick work of that bird"...but quick on the heels was "hm...but not at night since I don't have a light on it".

I've seen a couple that have not only visible light, but also IR to work with NVG's...any thoughts? It's a Stag Arms 18" 3-gun Elite, Pic rail on top but M-lok on the sides (I prefer a side mount position). I'm undecided on a remote pressure switch but I guess it makes sense...oh, and plain ol' black.

Related - I have a Sig Romeo MSR red dot in FDE that was on the gun for about ten rounds. I swapped it for a Romeo/Juliet combo in black (dot/magnifier). If anyone is interested in the FDE (dot only, no magnifier), drop me a note. 10 rounds under it, factory packaging/books/lens cloth/adjusting key.

Rat,
Two things:
1. Most "birds of prey" are protected and therefore illegal to shoot.
2. Firing an AR at a bird up a tree or in the air could have some serious down range consequences.
A shotgun with turkey or goose loads would not only be safer but also more effective, especially at night.
